Barrel and throat life, bruh. We know how fast rounds wear barrels... 300 Win Mag, 300 RUM, 270 WSSM....even 25-06 & 243. If barrel life exceeds 5k rds, this indicates advanced metallurgy. Which means it's going to be HUGELY expensive.

That's my concern as well. There's no free lunch, physics is undefeated and we know what higher rifle round pressures do to barrel life. The civilian pressure round that doesn't have the special bimetal case will be comparable to what we're all used to but it's also missing out on the capability of the higher spec round. Replacement barrels able to withstand that of pressure over an active deployment firing schedule are a simple, if expensive, logistics supply issue I assume the bean counters have accounted for but can easily be neglected.

There's 308win factory ammo that will produce similar velocities with 150gr the same barrel length, though that is with fancy powders. Buffman range tested the 150gr SST superformance from a 12.5" at 2550ish...and that is within the comparatively low regular 308win pressure specs. To exceed the 135gr ballistics, you'd have to step it up to 155gr ish bullets tho. Just imagine what a hybrid 308 cartridge might do with 180 or 200grain pills, jesus! Kick like a 300 win mag, I presume

Just want to give my input from a former infantrymans standpoint on actually using a 5.56 weapon in Afghanistan. I was a saw gunner on my first deployment there, but my company was also attached to Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force and we were attached to a 3rd SFG ODA team. Most operations we did, I did not take my SAW (which if I have to remind, is a 5.56 light machine gun) but would take someones M4 instead if I felt the mission called for it. In more "kinetic" operations where it was guaranteed a large gunfight was to occur (sometimes lasting multiple days), I did bring my SAW. I wanted fire superiority by "volume", rather than accuracy - and that to me was an "operator preference" decision I made on my own going into certain areas. When I did take my SAW, It was configured with whats called the "PARA" barrel...its a shorter 12 inch barrel over its longer barrel as it was more maneuverable around structures and in buildings and it kept it quite light. I just kept the longer barrel in my truck and would use it if i felt a barrel change for heat reasons needed to occur. With that said, we were in NE Afghanistan where engagements were "decently" far. Id say the furthest was around 400 meters and the closet being sometimes just a few meters away. The ranges were quite dynamic. At this time, I was issued the M855A1 ammunition which is hotter load than its predecessor M855 (green tip) and the bullet was redesigned for the tip of the bullet to be steel, followed by a lead core copper jacket behind it (basically its 2 parts), I can recall an engagement I made with that 12 inch barrel on a fighting position of 2 taliban fighters that were around 350-ish meters away. Both fighters had their bodies exposed basically from belly button up firing on other positions of our element, and I fired a few burst strings into their position and they dropped instantly. I did not do a BOGBDA on that position (Boots On Ground Battle Damage Assessment) to confirm where on their bodies I hit them, but ISR (the drone above us) did confirm they were killed. A few operators from the SF team (the 18 Bravos of all guys) preferred their MK18 mod 1s over their ALSO issued SCAR-H using the MK262 ammo (77 grain SMK bullet) and affectively dropped guys easily out at 400 meters and hit that "off button" on some fighters. There were times the Taliban did ambush us on patrols where their positions were maybe 800+ meters out, even way more than that sometimes. Their weapon systems being typical AK47s firing 7.62x39 and PKMs firing 7.62x54R and their fire was so ineffective. They were way out of range for us, we had some snipers come out with us to take them out, or set up some 60mm or 81mm mortars to take out those fighting positions and we took our time doing so because their fire was extremely ineffective given their distance. If anything, we would just call Air Weapon Teams (typically Apache's) and just have them take out the positions and it was a good day. In my opinion as someone whos been down range in Afghanistan where engagements WERE further sometimes than 300 meters - 5.56x45mm did its job. I never really thought a new round or weapon would help me accomplish my job better or anything like that. Some veterans may differ on the opinion but we all had a different experience. Im just showing mine. In my opinion - i think the US Army was taking a look more at statistics on paper, rather than actual battlefield feedback and looked for an excuse to dox the M4 Carbine entirely out of its arsenal and get a new one. The biggest reason it seemed the Army wanted a more capable weapon was the ability to defeat rifle rated body armor. Some have said to me "Maybe we are getting ready for a war with China or Russia" - but my only problem with that statement is....Russia does not issue rifle rated body armor to standard Infantry units and China only started to just 2 years ago and its still a slow progression. So why was the Army in such a rush to acquire a new weapon? I would say to that - use your imagination and think of an "army" that does have body armor. Thats my 2 cents.

According to Sig they are using a new barrel process that allows barrels to be way more durable. This process is superior to HF . Sig has hinted to this process but hasn't even released any good info on it either . The M5 barrels per TDP is supposed to last 12k - 15k life expectancy. I'm actually pretty interested in picking up Sig Cross 16" 277 Fury . Seems to me like to would be solid choice for LW Hunting Rifle for Lower 48 .

The XM5 barrels are made out of an unusual and expensive steel called Maraging Steel, which is also used inside jet engines to withstand afterburner. It's so unusual that it's a closely monitored material by the US government as it's highly suitable for uranium enrichment centrifuges.

Another great informative video! I've been following this design and the future military weapons design development since 1995. I've had a few design ideas get developed for the military. Some are currently being fielded. I was but just a 24 year old kid back in 1995, when I had the honor of speaking to Eugene M. Stoner who was literally looking over my shoulder as I was explaining the thoughts behind a design idea, to another engineer. How that under stress and adrenaline, you lose finite motor muscle movements, and that the button on the stock needed to be redesigned, and reversed rather than a button that had to be pulled, it needed to be pushed instead as to facilitate major muscle movements under stress of combat. Stoner was listening in on the conversation, when I saw and recognized Stoner's reflection in the computer screen, I just turned and said to him, I'm just here trying to learn a thing or two... He looked at me and smiled with his characteristic half frown have grin look on his face and nodded his head to me, saying, "yes ,yes , well yes" , he said. I was thrilled just to be in the same room with him. I had originally seen a vision of the 200-600m back up iron sight , as I'm holding a WW2 German FG42, I turned to Doug Olson and said Why don't you make a sight like this? Doug said that's a good idea! I think we will! And the rest is history as they say. From what I've seen the sights on the new military SIG M-5 rifles actually have a updated version of my orginal rear sight design idea. I feel immensely thrilled to see the adoption of the sight with this new rifle from SIG, and to know the history behind the scenes of its idea. All I had to offer was the suggestion of an idea, seeing it into the future and its use by our military makes me very happy to have had just a small role to play in its development.

Great video! THIS is the kind of real world, head to head data we need. And that's just out of a 13" barrel? Crazy!! You only touched on it briefly, but yeah, I do think barrel erosion/burnout is going to be a very real problem; one more easily solved with the Govt's coffers than when this is more available out in the Civilian world. My guess is that Armorers are going to have to keep a Logbook with round counts for each rifle, and replace barrels on a set schedule.

The problem with government military philosophy that has also bled into the private sector is the attempt at having the universal, one thing to do it all piece of gear. The army did this earlier with camouflage when it introduced multicam; which has subsequently led to the creation of it variants for specialized situations. Arid for desert conflicts, Tropic for jungle and forest conflicts, Black for nighttime operations, and Alpine for snowy areas. Now, the military is asking for a rifle and cartridge to operate in both close quarters and snipe targets out to 600+ meters. It is not possible. Just like there is no universal camouflage pattern, there is also no universal cartridge nor weapon system. .300 Blackout is one such example because it was primarily designed to be used against armored targets in close quarters. That is why your cannot use your .300 blk rifle in a rural setting because it loses velocity very quickly at relatively short distances. On the flip side, 7.62x51 is designed to be shot at larger distances, but weighs a lot and is only effective out of a longer barrel, making it ineffective in CQC. The M4 and 5.56x45 are not going away anytime soon. The earliest is going to be in the 2050s. I expect to see the M5 to be deployed ALONGSIDE the M4, not replace it. Some units need to be trained for ranges combat were as others need to be trained for CQC. The medic cannot be the communications guy just like the sniper can’t hack into a mainframe. No one person can do everything and the sooner the government and public realize that, the sooner we (the United States) will be back on track to being the most effective fighting force in the world with ZERO countries being anywhere remotely close.

I was reading online that a guy took .308/7.62 calibers and stuck them in 6.8 x 51 Hybrid Casings, and was able to get a 168 grain projectile moving at over 3,256 FPS in a 24 inch barrel. That's over 3,900 foot lbs of Energy! 300 Winchester Magnum territory! I can honestly start to see other companies creating similar products for other cartridges like 5.56, 7.62 x 39, etc. It would just make these already great cartridges even more potent!

Thanks for this VERY enlightening video. In addition to a great cartridge and excellent rifle SIG has also developed the best suppressor for it because it does NOT blow gasses back to the shooter as does virtually every other suppressor design. SIG did it with a complex baffle system that could only be made by 3D printing. -> And then there is the great Vortex sight system for the M7 that gives average soldiers an 80% hit probability! Thus no need to carry a big ammo load out as with the 5.56 NATO round.

I was in Iraq from 2004-2005 and had a full length M16A4. All of us wanted a M4 or the awesome shorties. It was so bad they had to issue an order saying we could not purchase our own uppers and put them on our firearms. The ranged stuff at over 300 meters was for the DMRs, crew served, or air strikes. I get it that we were in urban locations and we benefited from shorter configs like that awesome little M249 with the shorty. I dont understand why the army didnt go with something in the AR15 platform like a .300 blk or 6.8 spc. Maybe a cross between the two with a 556 case flaired to take a 6.8mm bullet. I think this project will ultimately fail. The enemy has no capability for ground troops to reach out as far as we can today. I think they tailored this to the russian threat and we have figured out what I have been saying that Russia is a joke. The Chinese? They have less of an interest in starting a war us than we do with them. They will just buy us. They have one aircraft carrier and no way to get their troops to the US. They will just buy us out and not kill anyone.

Really would be curious to see data for 308 hybrid of same gr loaded to 80000psi chamber pressure in a 13" barrel. I'm willing to bet velocity would be higher. Which would mean less barrel life. BC would be worse meaning more drop and less 'energy' on target. The only thing I wonder about is the affect that projectile diameter has on targets down range. .30 has proved to be particularly devastating. I'd like to see how 277 stacks up on physical targets

Faster bullets burning barrels is a misunderstood concept. It's not the speed that burns the barrels; it's the slower-burning powder used to push the bullet all the way down a longer barrel. It is the powder burning down the barrel that causes them to crack.

There is fancy and costly factory ammo that duplicates the 277 13" velocities in the 308 within standard pressure specs. 150gr Hdy SST at 2550fps from a 12.5" according to some test buffman did a while back if I remember correctly. This projectile is not as ballistically efficient tho as the 135gr .270. Now if you could make a 155gr Berger HT move at the speed of the 150gr SST, your 308 would actually outperform the 135gr fury load at all ranges...

The .277 Fury shows real promise as a back country hunting rifle, pulling 2600 fps in a 13" barrel is going to put it near 2800 fps in an 18" configuration. An excellent candidate for a suppressed hunting rifle!

What ACTUALLy would have made sense is to use that case technology on the 6mm AR / 6mm ARC. Memory serves 6mmARC is around 2500 to 2600 fps out of a 16 in tube. Add that extra pressure. and you will get 2800 to 2900 fps. A lot lighter, easier to shoot/train new recruits on. The only question 6.8x51 or a 6mmARC fury would be barrel life. If sig is right and they cracked the code and arn't burning through barrels, a 6mmARC-Fury would be INCREDIBLE

Interesting, thanks for the video. I haven’t checked but could one build a 277 on an AR10 platform? The 308 bolt should work but in not sure if barrels are available yet. What about reloading supplies like brass? I’d certainly prefer a 18” or 20” barrel if I ever build one.

Our Government could have saved a load of money and just ordered 6mm arc uppers for all of the lowers that are already in service and it outperforms 308 and lighter than the ar10 platform and 28 rounds in magazines so not much loss for capabilities offered by the 6 mm arc just my thoughts also the military has adopted the 6mm arc and has some uppers in service

They wanted a heavier bullet. This was from real world data gathered during the GWOT. Lots of soldiers were using M14 variants and AR10 variants during this conflict due to the stopping power of the 308 round.

@Riorozen It's a lesson about stopping power that the 5.56 didn't have. If 308 could take a grown man down in one shot while it takes 5.56 four shots, it's obvious which is better. That's a lesson we'd need for any fanatical fighting force moving forward that'll fight as long as they have breath.

This gun is the unicorn of unicorns right now, and so is the caliber. You can find 277 sig fury ammo, but no gun to shoot it in. Even the Sig Cross's in 277 fury are non-existent on the commercial market. Every shop with them listed is out of stock, which leads me to believe they were never in stock to begin with.

I can see this rifle becoming mainline infantry rifles for soldiers to be supported with good supply lines and means of transporting large amounts of ammo. Special forces are probably going to stick to 5 56 and maybe have a man or two on the team running spears. No more will a guy be weighed down by carrying a big ass 308 with a 5.56 rifle on his back. This will be big.

This rifle would be great in the semi auto DMR role to replace the CSASS and M110. Heck even issue one to every squad. Recoil and barrel life would be much less of an issue then. But nope, the army decided they wanted a full sized SHV magnum cartridge full auto battle rifle in the hands of every average infantryman. Amazing.

There's always someone saying, "BARREL LIFE!" To that, I say, Bruh... It's Uncle Sugar. He doesn't care about barrel life. As civilians, if we stick to the .277 Fury loadings, we'll be fine. I appreciated the point made near the end of the video about a 13" barrel vs. 16". Unless the NFA gets struck down soon (here's hoping), most of us will be using a 16" barrel. So we should get all of the performance we need from the standard .277 Fury ammo. As for me, I don't know if any of this is worth the investment. I'm already invested, nominally, in the .308/7.62 NATO cartridge. I'm just not sure there will be ANY compelling case in the near future to switch. Just think of how much more 7.62 NATO surplus may become available when the Army switches. Yeah, I realize it probably won't work that way. They'll just push the 7.62 NATO to National Guard & Reserve units who probably won't see these new rifles for at least 15 years...unless they had to deploy.
