Tausug here. We're not really considered as an IP. In fact, we're not covered by the Indigenous People's Act which is a law that was created for the IPs back in 1998. Like you would not call a Kapampangan, Ilocano, Cebuano, Negrense or Tagalog as an IP. We're just Tausug of the Sulu Archipelago whose History can be traced as far as 13th Century via the Sulu Sultanate. We've only been officially part of the Philippines after the USA conquered us after a massive bloodshed in the 20th century.

This is such a great song. It's actually a sort of sequel to Maharani. Both "Maharani" and "Dayang" are monarchical titles of women in court back in the precolonial era. The dance in the MV is based on Filipino folk dance and martial arts! I have a twitter thread pinned to the top of my page about all the cultural references. Alamat (means Legend) is currently the only PPop group that sings in multiple Filipino languages. Each member comes from a different region and speaks a different language. I recommend Maharani if you liked this song! But they do some HEAVIER stuff, like Dagundong talks about the history of Spanish colonization, and the MV of Kasmala is about when indigenous Filipinos were displayed in USA in human zoos, especially 1904 St Louis World's Fair. They also have ILY ILY which is about families broken up by Filipino migrant workers.

"Alamat" means legend or folktale. also means origin. - the concept of the group is all about Filipino culture, and the members represent and occasionally sing their parts in their respective languages on where they are from, here are the members representation: Tomas: Bicolano R-Ji: Waray Taneo: Ilocano Alas: Bisaya Mo: English and Tagalog Jao: Kapampangan You would notice that prevalently in their debut, that they were singing in 9 different languages in one song. since the concept of the group is all about the Phlippine culture, the title of their songs, the music videos, and choreographies always include any traditional Filipino roots

As a Tausug, Dayang can have different meanings in context. It could mean Beloved/Darling or Princess/Lady of a Royal Court. "Kalasahan ta kaw" can be straight up "I love you" but less intense.
