Thanks as usual for supporting PPOP. This song is a revival of an old hit song. The song is sung in mix of the Tagalog and Chavacano language. Chavacano is another one of the hundreds of languages in the Philippines. Chavacano is a term used for a group of Spanish-based creole language varieties spoken in the Philippines. None of the members can speak Chavacano.

Chabacano is a Spanish creole. They say it originated In Zamboanga, where the Spanish built a fort to keep the Sultanate of Sulu at bay - that time a great naval power and considered a threat to the Spanish colony. The workers who built the fort came from all kinds of places and had no common language, so they mixed the words of their Spanish masters with a sentence structure more like Philippine languages. The bowler hat costumes of Alamat are remiscent of late 19th century rich Filipinos who spoke Spanish. The peasant costumes are also old and from those who didn't speak Spanish in the late colonial period. The two languages used Tagalog which is the language of the capital city conquered by Spain in 1571 and Chabacano from Zamboanga plus the modern and period costumes give a dreamy feel of different people and times..

Philippines was the longest country was colonized by spanish. Spanish was the official language but the locals didn't learn spanish, only those people who speak spanish are mestizo(mixed), Caucasian(americans), government and few native filipino.

Spanish was a lost spoken language in the Philippines due to American colonization for 50 yrs. English is now widely spoken in the Philippines.

I heard somewhere it was the time when America colonized the Philippines or maybe even before that when America "defeated" Spain to "liberate" Philippines from Spanish rule, and they discouraged use of Spanish, and telling Filipinos that Spanish is trash. But more likely, it was Filipino nationalism and pride that wanted to be rid of colonialism and rule of upper class Spanish and mestizos. Human nature... in order to better one's situation, you need to topple down those who are in top. This is a somewhat tóxic way of getting ahead in life... by bringing everyone else down and let them share in your misery. Because not everyone learned to speak Spanish since only the ones who could afford to go to school learned some, the rest wouldn't let them have that privilege. That's my two cents.

Spanish in the Philippines is not looked at as "trash." Actually if you speak Spanish here, it is more associated to being in the Upper Class in social status. In the Spanish era, when hacenderos of Spanish decent controlled the country, Spanish was the lingua franca throughout the archipelago. It's a misunderstanding because Chavacano literally means "vulgar" and for obvious reasons. If you are a Spanish speaker and you hear Chavacano, you hear incorrect grammar so it is deemed a version of Spanish that is in "poor taste," "vulgar," or "common street talk." But it is a very unique language and Chavacano speakers should embrace and preserve this wonderful language so it does not die out.

I was excited for you to react to this video! I knew you would understand some of the words. As far as Spanish being considered “trash” in the Philippines, I don’t know about that since I am Filipino-American. Someone from the Philippines who knows about the history should, and probably will, answer that for you. I am glad you liked this song. I am a fan of both Alamat and SB19 🤎💙

Also, the part that you said about "Spanish is trash" over here, I don't get that. There's no issue here for using the Spanish language. Maybe, the commenter meant that we don't even speak Spanish here. Mainly Filipinos can speak their mother tongue, Tagalog and English. Actually, it's sad that we lost the ability to speak Spanish.

That's the first time i hear about Spanish being trash language. That person must be referring to the Colonizer. If a Filipino digs deeper into the history of almost 500 years colonization of the Philippines, one's initial reaction is anger and that's a reasonable feeling. But then, same reaction would be felt to the other invaders, US and Japan. Even now that China is encroaching on our territory was detested by the people. So I presume the comment was lost in translation. I would bet Filipinos would want to re-learn the language because a lot of literary pieces was done in Spanish by Filipinos in the centuries past and as per the Scholars comment are the best of its kind. And we are multi-lingual, given that we know used everyday Spanish loan words in our language, it would be easier to learn it.
