ALAN BECKER - How I Export My Animations

This is the method I use to export my finished animation to KZbin.
NOTE: I learned after making this video that exporting from Swivel as a MOV rather than as an MP4 will add a noticeable amount of quality. MP4 does make the color look slightly duller, even if there are no compression artifacts or skipped frames. Also instead of AAC it is best to use Raw PCM 16-bit, and this option appears when you switch it to MOV.

I do mine by exporting the SWF, then I export the audio as a WAV in the highest possible quality Flash allows, then I drop both into After Effects. Every 30 seconds or so, I have to re-align the audio by 1 frame to make sure it stays in sync. Then I export the video as a MOV with After Effects' built-in compression preset called Animation. The Animation preset is very similar to ProRes on a Mac; it's practically lossless in terms of quality. The file sizes end up being huge, but since I only upload about once a month, it's no big deal setting aside a day just for uploading. Sometimes I'll simply upload over night. It's important to keep in mind that H264 desaturates the colors a bit.

Would you recommend putting all the sound files in flash and exporting, or using a second video editor. I do the latter and have an issue where the video editing program is laggy when scrubbing through the animation

Hi, I have an animation that uses a Drop Shadow filter on a Movie Clip Symbol (for an object's shadow on the ground) but for some reason, Swivel doesn't apply the filter - it just outputs the same image of the object. Any ideas on what's going on?

I had this problem as well. I fixed it by splitting up my project and just publishing multiple swf files. Every 1500 frames or so, make a new file to continue the animation in rather than just using the same file and making one long swf file.

The only thing about this video I feel you didn't do right, was how you exported the SWF using Swivel. Usually, rendering out videos as an MP4 isn't a bad thing. In most cases, it's preferred. But with Swivel, rendering out a SWF as an MP4 actually isn't the best method. It's not a fault of the codec itself, but for whatever reason, Swivel's implementation of MP4 encoding alters the colors. Which makes the image look muddier and more washed out compared to the original source. I wouldn't harp on you about this, if you didn't make the point of the video to do this "Without Losing Quality". And from an objective standpoint, this is a method that literally entails quality loss. The only way you can convert a SWF through Swivel, without any alterations being made to the colors, or having any sort of quality loss, is rendering it out as a Quicktime Animation (or .mov). It makes the file size bigger, but it ensures that it will be the most pure source you can have it as.

+Sean Webby I second this. Always export from Swivel as a MOV file. For some reason the colors (ESPECIALLY the greens) are significantly duller compared to how they look in Flash. Another reason to export as a MOV is because it'll give you a better result if you plan on editing the animation further in a program like Adobe Premiere (which many animators do for Audio since Flash is generally a terrible program for editing audio in).

+OblivionFall Exactly. And considering, Alan, that in the video you rendered out the audio in the "Raw" preset in Flash, it would make more sense if you rendered out the audio in Swivel as "Raw PCM 16-bit", so the audio doesn't get distorted along the way either.

cody cloud Is it like a green outline, or a solid green shape? If it's the former, check which layer you're drawing on and uncheck the green square.
