You should try doing grease pencil animation in Blender 2.93 Not only is it full-fledged with layers and everything, works with a tablet, and lets you outright sculpt your shapes, but you can also grow and shrink each point of every line individually or together, with or without affecting those around it (Proportional editing) You can do tweening in between different sculpts of the same grease pencil stroke, on top of other fancy tricks. Not only that, right, but it's Blender So you can work in a mix of 3D and 2D with ease

I highly recommend RoughAnimator as a program. I know it's definitely not super high end software, but it's the best thing I've found for beginner animation and being able to lean as you go! It's built by an animator so it has what you reasonably do need and it's only 5 dollars to own it forever with updates! If you did a series on comparing different cheap\free animation apps I'd love to see RoughAnimator put up against the likes of Pencil2D or flip-a-clip! On the other end, I'd recommend TV paint as a professional software, while my college was teaching us all our skills in Adobe Animator TV paint is what all my friends at better colleges had been learning [and letting me try out] TV paint is super easy to use, and has all you'd ever need for animation!

As a person who grew up animating in Microsoft paint, to medibang (just an art program not an animation one), Krita was my savior. Exporting each individual drawing/frame was painstakingly time consuming. And I couldn’t see if anything looked off until everything was exported and then imported into windows video editing and hit film express. So when I heard about Krita, which was free and basically just like any other art program with the ability to animate, I was super excited. It’s crazy, I never thought I’d get good at animating but now I’m starting to improve a lot! Even currently working on making an animation for my friend.

I also love how 10% of that video was basically an ad...

Well, that depends on what animation you are after. If you are after 3d animation there is Maya (be warned, this program does sometimes crash with large projects), blender (my favourite), cinema 4d. Which will require a rig character to animate with. But if you are after 2d animation, blender also does 2d animation. Toon boom harmony. There are quite a bit more software out there that I haven't mentioned as I have not use it yet and I can't know for sure how well it would be to animate in. Either way, I know you will have fun learning whatever software you choose to use.
