He’s playing the wrong system and formation for starters, which is stifling our best creative attacking players who, if we had a half decent manager, would be able to play a formation and system that gets the best out of them. I think he’s also starting to lose the dressing room, because the players will be hearing the criticism and privately be thinking pundits, the fans and ex players will have a point. Nothing will change until he goes… ! Southgate plays not to lose, rather than plays to win. This is the crux of ALL the problems we have.

They like him as a man but they know that tactically he is completely out of his depth and the frustration is starting to show. It's obvious why England sat back after the goal, it's because they were told to. England played well for 30 mins in the first half against Serbia and we're pretty woeful after that. After the game Southgate said that the reason they were so poor second half is because they over exerted themselves in the first half, they were playing too quickly according to him. So he actually criticized the only positive period of play during that game.

I have been saying since 2018 Southgate is 20 years behind as a coach. Trent is a fine wide player, but not a central midfielder at the moment. The only way you can play him is either in place of Saka or as a wing back in a back 5. Mainoo must be a better bet in this system.

He needs Salah & Darwin & Jota like runs to stretch rivals back 3. Trent was let down by Kane's unfitness/hurt back. Trent created most chances & long passes ( in only 54 mins, more than Rice did in 90+ minutes ) Are we gonna waste another world class talent like Hoddle or make it work like Italy did with Pirlo. It's time to go 3-4-3 with Kyle-Dunk-Guehi at the back & Trent on the right & Shaw on the left with Palmer-Watkins-Gordon up front. Gareth should pick the team on Friday at 13.30pm (at Munich time) so that boys can get ready for battle by visualising victory over next 4 sunsets before 4 nice sleeps. Then, after about 9 good nights of sleep, England will have Jude-Saka-Kane & Foden & Stones back to full fitness. With Palmer & Watkins & Gordon ready to come off the bench if energy levels drop again in the KO stages. Don Capello & Didi Hamman are spot on. Watch at 21 mins when Pickford passed the ball to Denmark, leading to 3 mins of pressure in our half. Schmiecal wuda wasted time & calmed his defence down & given them a breather in very humid heavy air. Mate the team is never going to function if the players are out of position, he needs to stop playing Foden on LW we have Gordon there who plays in that position week in week out, Trent shouldn’t be in the midfield unless he’s inverting from RB, Bellingham should be an 8 and play Foden as the 10 then if you want to sub in Palmer he can come on for Foden and Manu can come on for either rice or Bellingham. Then we need to press we having got the defenders like we used too, we can’t just sit off the opposition. It’s not in our identity to win tournaments. 1966 aside, we’ve never won anything. Never got to a WC Final. Only got to and lost one Euros Final in 2021. Got to a couple of WC semis. And that is about it. We also produce some of the world’s worst managers (Southgate included). Most of the current impressive football managers current are from Spain (esp Basque Country in Spain). Tbh, Ralf Ragnick has got Austria playing high intensity / gengenpressing footie made life hard for France didnt they. We should go and get him after this tournament ends. Trent was put their to open up defenses with killer passes, but if nobody is prepared to make any runs then there's no point in playing him. Gordon and Palmer have to be given a chance, and Mainoo has been excellent too.

Alan Shearer is right, Gordon will pair well with Kane upfront with Saka but Southgate seems to be reserving Gordon for the knock-out stages where we will meet the likes of Germany and France. My fear is we haven't found a way of unlocking the low-ranked teams that are very defensive for 90mins...which are likely to be one of the 3rd-best teams to qualify for the round 16 stage and England will definitely meet such teams and they can unexpectedly knock out a top team. Recall Greece in 2004 Euros, they went on to win it and this Euros reminds me a lot of 2004 honestly...

Disagree with alan Brazil as a Scotsman. Last night was fantastic watching. Seeing england being shown up for what they really are. A good team and nothing more than that. These players are not world class!
