This is such a great discussion! I only just discovered Alan Chapman a few days ago and then immediately got my hands on Magia and started reading it. Forgive me if I don't already know about these things, I also don't have a Magick background (yet), but I really love what Alan starts talking about around the 52 minute mark up to about the 59th minute. There's a kind of cliffhanger there that I wish could continue. Maybe Alan can come back to expand on these things. A few notes from that time segment: - the silent knowing*; it's driving you to look for something but you can't explain what it is [Yes!! Yes!!] - the nature of the Divine as the Beloved; you can only long for someone that you love if you've already known them before, if you've already been in love with them; you're looking for someone that is absent that you've already known [Wow! I love this and find it so beautiful and have never heard it described in this way and so clearly!] - we are recapitulating cosmology, we are repeating the first day of creation - the point of the practice is to complete the circle of creation - things get too profound and too miraculous - to die while you're still alive** - there are things like talking birds, not visions of birds but actual earth birds that are messengers from the true earth; the language of the birds is a real thing Gosh!!! Please go on! And then what else about the talking birds and the true earth...? I'm dying to know and can't stop thinking about it. I noticed there's a recurring motif of a magpie on the Magia book cover, the Barbarous Words website logo, and a stuffed magpie in the background in Alan's room in one of his videos (The Turning of the Age: A Vision of Aquarius). What does the magpie mean? I've been a nerd about esoteric traditions for many years and now I love noticing correspondences or meaningful threads linking them together. * 'Silent knowing' reminds me of what Gurdjieff's Fourth Way would call 'magnetic center' - this idea that there's something inside some of us that draws us irresistibly to seek for something missing in life, ultimately union with the Beloved or seeking what is most Real. ** To die while you're still alive - go do a Google search for "Gurdjieff The Last Hour of Life" for some really good instructions as a thought experiment for attempting to do that. As a side thought, I wonder if you could also have a discussion about these things in relation to music? I feel like intuitively there is a connection between music, sound, light, vibration, etc., and completing the circle of creation or as a way to get closer to the Beloved. I compose music off and on and always feel like the highest music should be a vehicle to bring the listener closer to the Real or feel it inside themselves. Some of my deepest experiences in life have been through music. Thanks for this excellent discussion! I'm going to rewatch it many times and dive further into this Great Work.

I picked the same book from a similar end of run bookshop in Warrington when I was around 18 or 19, that would be 35 years ago. It was a rough cut Castle edition of MITAP. I think it was The Works bookstore.

Good interview haha. Got some Pan vibes here and there, especially with the little spikes in Alan's hair at the right angles. Alan, After we've died and are looking into the world of creation how do we "perceive" or understand it when someone from the world of time turns their mind toward us in eternity? What is your profoundest spiritual experience? What was the last shadow you bound, and what what kind of fruit was borne when it was made conscious and turned right-side up? Thanks!

You wrap it up neatly in occult, esoteric, hidden knowledge involving Crowley and other characters, but Astral Projection is just lucid dreaming. I could teach it to you tonight, but you’d still have to put in the 10,000 hours to learn it. Sylvan Muldoon published his book in 1929, and there are many more now. It’s science, not magic.

Staring into the abyss. Occam's razor would reveal that Crowley was a fraud and he's "still alive" because his deceptions are still drawing people into the abyss of seemingly meaningful connections surrounding his work. Might as well sell more books about him though innit?
