Alan Lee's work is so amazing. I would love a full, largescale Middle-earth art book of his work.
@magisterdamask901523 күн бұрын
There were Hobbit/Lord of the Rings sketchbooks that were released years and years ago that collected his work, though they're probably out of date now and missing most of his more recent art.

My goodness, it's amazing to see Alan's original and revisited pieces - 30 years interval does beautiful things to these already iconic paintings! The new Hobbit editions are equally stunning!

Oh Matt thanks for this. Alan is my favourite Tolkien artist and that's not taking anything away from any of the others it's just his ethereal touches something deep and gets me in the feels. He is a joy to listen to. Such a beautiful calming soul. I'm glad he was able to talk to you. ❤

Alan Lee was always my favourite person to listen to on the old DVD commentaries. This was obviously ages before "ASMR" was a thing - which I still don't follow - but I already thought then he had a unique quality for this. He also has a good sense of humour. It's a little painful to notice that a relatively old-looking person then could look significantly older now... Though I think he still looked how I remembered him in some Hobbit production clips.

I've thought for a while now that the next Tolkien book should be "The Voyages of Earendil" as the "4th Great Tale" of the 1st age. And Alan just confirmed he would love to illustrate it! Imagine illustrations of some deep cut moments like Earendil sailing past volcanic islands and fighting Ungoliant!

You know, people from my country translated The Children of Hurin into my country's language, and then the book came out and I of course bought it. And in the website of the publisher, I saw that they are going to publish Beren and Luthien soon, so when that came out, I, again, bought it of course. And then I thought to myself:"They have to publish The Fall of Gondolin next, they had to read it when thet were translating The Children of Hurin, when Christopher says something like that the first age consists of three main tales: Beren and Luthien, The Children of Hurin, and The Fall of Gondolin". And last Sunday I go to the bookstore, and I see that they have published The Lost Tales earlier than The Fall of Gondolin. I was very happy, and I am going to buy it, but it still feels a little out of place. P.S. I love the illustrations in Beren and Luthien, esspecially the illustation of Luthien inside of Tevildo's castle.

It's pretty cool that Lee made LOTR even for books not written by Tolkien. There's even an amazing one made for an analysis that depicts Sauron forging the One Ring wearing only a loincloth

31:50: You can actually visit Rivendell (Bruchtal) Mr. Nerd - I'm quite sure Tolkien was inspired by the Lauterbrunnental in the Canton of Berne in Switzerland (30 min from my house) and I've seen the postcard of an elderly man in the alps, which seems to have been the inspiration for the look of Mithrandir. Probably a topic to cover?;)

The illustrations in the Folio Society edition (the color ones and the smaller b/w ones on the chapter openers) are by and large the same ones that appeared in the 60th anniversary edition published in 1997 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
