The two features you mention are just a couple of the measures I took to cover up the relentless pop-up graphics that were continually spat upon the screen every 30 seconds or so including the rolling info-banner along the bottom of the screen that you often/always see on such things these days. It took a lot of time and effort to get it looking this 'clean'.
