The late film composer, legendary Johnny Mandel's gorgeous tune "Emily" from the film "The Americanization of Emily". Alan plays it beautifully on this Steinway model "D" concert grand, which is freshly tuned !! What a difference an in-tune piano makes !! In the mid 1970's I was alone, playing "Emily" in an empty Studio "A" at A&M records in Hollywood. Just solo piano on a Steinway model "B". A guy walked in, presumably a recording engineer, to kick me out for an upcoming recording session, but instead, he stopped at the piano and listened to me play until I finished the tune. He said " 'Nice tune, did you write that tune?" I said "No, I wish I had, but it was written by Johnny Mandel." The guy said, well, I play that tune a little also, would you like to hear my version?" I said, "Certainly." He sat down to play his version of "Emily". ( I actually though my version was a bit better) When he finished playing, I thought it would be fun to ask him the same question he asked me, so I said " 'Nice tune, did you write that tune?" And the guy said "Yes. Yes, I did write that tune. " And that's how I met Johnny Mandel.

It's renderings like this, that retain the simplicity of the original tune and chords, and, at the same time, elaborate with more advanced improvisation and harmony, that make someone like Alan Pasqua a true artist. The visual component here is also remarkably demonstrative of how relaxed he is while playing. BTW I highly recommend getting his Songbook ($14!), which contains so many memorable original tunes, beautifully produced...
