When two people so deeply embedded in their own fields have the fluency to talk like this in general terms it’s a gift.

I am so glad that Alan Stern did not constantly interrupt Lawrence like Neil degrasse Tyson (NDT). This was such a relief after watching obnoxious and arrogant NDT.

Great stuff! I only wish this podcast had come out on the heels of the headlines about New Horizons when it was all abuzz for the general public. I have been waiting for this for a long time. It did not disappoint.

I don't get the bickering. Pluto is a planet, more specifically, a dwarf planet because it is small. "Dwarf" is just an adjective giving us some extra information about the object. "It's no longer a planet" is just not right. Like a dwarf star is still a star a dwarf planet is still a planet, just a small one...

I would just like to relieve Dr. Krouse of his anxiety about Humans in planetary space. One of the big projects Musk is working on is artificial intelligence. The first planet targeted for colonization is Mars. But, that will be preceded by robots who will build the infrastructure to support human life.

How far away from our sun do we need to be to reach absolute zero?
@karagi101
@karagi101 4 жыл бұрын
CHOOPS K The cosmic background radiation from the Big Bang fills the universe. This radiation is 2.7 degrees Celsius above absolute zero. We can reach colder temperatures in our laboratories but it’s impossible to reach absolute zero.

So... I'll admit... I am only 10 minutes or so in... but did he say anything that was large enough to make itself a sphere is a planet? Then he said they did not have to be the dominant gravitational object? What about moons? I'm not hearing anything in that definition that precludes moons from being planets... If you say they have to orbit a sun... cool... but they did not. Did I miss something there?

Let’s be realistic, could life really exist in those subsurface oceans? Conventional wisdom tells us that the source of heating would be in the form of geothermal vents. Now these oceans are estimated to be 2-5 times as deep as the pacific. Life would want to go where it’s warm, and form where it’s warm, aka around the vents. But very few forms of life can withstand the water pressure at the deepest point of the pacific, so I doubt anything could survive that much pressure in those oceans. It would be too cold for life to accumulate closer to the surface.

What is this? These guys only talk about themselves and how great they are. Obviously L. Krauss has gotten the help of some of his academic friends to help him shore up his halted career. This is not interesting for those of us without tenure, Lar!

Let's put you in his place.... ok, now how do you proceed to discuss the topic? From your own perspective of course.... He is a theoretical physicist, so obviously he speaks from that experience as a reference point. Listen to all the science and let your mind be open. It was enlightening and inspirational.
