A native Finnish speaker here, tackling some of the Ahti-isms in this video. Many of his lines are direct translations to old sayings, idioms, poems or song lyrics that make little sense in the way they are worded. Ahti: Not so much evil that not a bit of good as well. Finnish: Ei niin pahaa ettei jotain hyvääkin. English: Every cloud has a silver lining. Ahti: Not one without the other. Finnish: Ei yhtä ilman toista. Meaning: These things come in pairs. Ahti: The work will instruct its maker. Finnish: Työ tekijäänsä neuvoo. English: You learn by doing. Ahti: The more cooks the worse the soup. Finnish: Mitä useampi kokki, sen huonompi soppa. English: Too many cooks spoil the broth. Ahti: Safe as in the Lord’s purse. Finnish: Tallessa kuin herran kukkarossa. Meaning: To be in a safe place. Ahti: The sun will shine even into a heap of twigs. Finnish: Paistaa se päivä risukasaankin. English: Every dog has its day. Ahti: He who moans about his troubles, is the prisoner of his troubles. Finnish: Ken vaivojansa vaikertaa, on vaivojensa vanki. Note: A verse from poem “Ilkka” by Kaarlo Kramsu first published in 1877, based on the life of Jaakko Ilkka who was a leader of the Cudgel War (a peasant revolt) in 1595. Also notable for the fact this could be an obscure easter egg only a Finn would catch since the likeness of Alan Wake is actor Ilkka Villi. Ahti: Name won’t make the man worse. Finnish: Ei nimi miestä pahenna. English: Rose by any other name. Ahti: We try to do good, but only prime comes out. Finnish: Hyvää yritetään, mutta priimaa pukkaa tulemaan. English: To go above and beyond. Ahti: Not so much sweet that it fills the whole stomach. Finnish: Ei makeaa mahan täydeltä. English: Too much of a good thing. Ahti: Only a seaman can know that, but even the seaman can’t know everything. Finnish: Vain merimies voi tietää, eikä merimieskään sentään kaikkea tiedä? Note: Saying based on a song "Vain merimies voi tietää" by Tapio Rautavaara. You can find many versions of it on KZbin! Ahti: Rain is coming down like from the ass of Esteri. Finnish: Sataa kuin Esterin perseestä. English: It’s raining cats and dogs. Note: This one isn't included in the video but it was so funny I couldn't forget it when I played that chapter myself. Ahti: Time is long for those who wait. Finnish: Odottavan aika on pitkä. English: A watched pot never boils. Ahti: But in the end, stand the thanks. Finnish: Mutta lopussa kiitos seisoo. English: All’s well that ends well. Ahti: He who reaches for a spruce tree will stumble into a juniper. Finnish: Joka kuuseen kurkottaa, se katajaan kapsahtaa. English: Look high and fall low. Ahti: He has kicked empty. Finnish: Hän potkaisi tyhjää. English: He kicked the bucket. Ahti: Tease a crazy man and he will show his ways. Finnish: Härnää hullua, saat tapansa tietää. Meaning: A crazy person can't conceal their true nature when provoked enough. Ahti: What has been, has gone. Finnish: Se on ollutta ja mennyttä. English: Let bygones be bygones. Ahti: But trouble doesn’t look like this. Finnish: Ei hätä ole tämän näköinen. Meaning: The situation isn’t as bad as it looks like. Ahti: You can never know in which tree the devil sits. Finnish: Ei sitä koskaan tiedä, missä puussa piru istuu. Meaning: You should be careful. Ahti: That held you close. Finnish: Läheltä piti. English: That was a close call. Ahti: Onwards, said the granny in the snow. Finnish: Etiäpäin, sanoi mummo lumessa. Meaning: Keep going, even though it seems difficult. Ahti: When the panic is biggest, the help is also near. Finnish: Kun hätä on suurin, on apukin lähellä. Meaning: You should accept help when you’re in trouble. Ahti: Fearing the master is the root of wisdom. Finnish: Herran pelko on viisauden alku. English: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. (Proverbs, 9:10) Ahti: Is there a bottom to this rumor? Finnish: Onko tällä huhulla pohjaa? English: Is there truth in this rumor? Ahti: Well-planned is half-done. Finnish: Hyvin suunniteltu on puoliksi tehty. English: Well begun is half done. Ahti: Light pictures Finnish: Valokuvat Note: The word “photograph” in Finnish is formed from the words valo (light) and kuva (picture). Ahti: What you leave behind, you find in front of you. Finnish: Minkä taakseen jättää sen edestään löytää. Meaning: Avoiding things will just lead to having to face them later on. Ahti: We loop around, and come together. Finnish: Ympäri mennään, yhteen tullaan. English: What goes around, comes around. Ahti: All you need is water and Vileda. Finnish: Tarvitset vain vettä ja Viledaa. Note: Finnish slogan for cleaning products manufactured by Vileda GmbH. Ahti: Water is the oldest balm. Finnish: Vesi vanhin voitehista. Note: An old saying from Kalevala. Ahti: Now there’s a devil in the fish trap. Finnish: Nyt on piru merrassa. Meaning: Refers to crabs getting stuck in fish traps, instead of fish. Ahti: The matter is a steak. Finnish: Asia on pihvi. Note: Loan from Swedish military slang, meaning something is approved. Ahti: Now comes the end of the rhyme. Finnish: Nyt tulee lorun loppu. English: This ends here.

Here are the translations for the Finnish parts in brackets. Many of them are meaningless filler sentences and profanities that don't have direct counterparts in English. Ahti also uses lots of literal English translations of Finnish proverbs, so I've also listed and explained the Finnish expressions that I picked up. 0:09 (no niin) - Well then 0:15 Not so much evil... - "Ei niin pahaa ettei jotain hyvääkin", like saying every cloud has a silver lining 0:20 Not one without the other - "Ei yhtä ilman toista", saying the two things (good and evil) come together) 0:30 (No totta helvetissä) - Hell yeah 0:36 The work will instruct... - "Työ tekijäänsä opettaa", meaning one learns while doing 0:44 The more cooks... - "Mitä useampi kokki, sitä huonompi soppa", like too many cooks spoil the broth 0:57 (No joo, mutta katopa kun) - Well yeah, but you see 1:02 (Eikö niin?) - Isn't that right? 1:14 Safe as in the Lord's purse - To be very safe, from the 1 Samuel 25:29 passage in the Bible 1:43 The sun will shine even into a heap of twigs. - "Paistaa se päivä risukasaankin", every dog has its day 2:39 (No eipä siinä) - Well no problem / nothing wrong with that 2:42 Name won't make the man worse - Full version is "ei nimi miestä pahenna, ellei nimi miestä", literally "the name won't make the man worse, unless the man makes the name worse". 2:54 We try to do good... - "Hyvään pyritään, mutta priimaa tuppaa tulemaan" meaning the results are better than expected 3:05 (Perkeleen) vikings, (perkele) - Goddamn vikings, goddammit. "Perkele" is a popular curse word that originally referred to the god of thunder. The meaning switched to an evil spirit in Christian times. 3:12 (Minäkö?) - Me? 3:17 (Perkele, saatana, en ollu en) - Goddammit, shit, no I wasn't. "Saatana" is a profanity that literally means the devil. 3:20 Not so much sweet... - "Ei makeaa mahan täydeltä", meaning you shouldn't have too much good. 3:33 Only a seaman can know that - "Vain merimies voi tietää", referring to a classic Finnish song from the 1950s 3:53 Time is long for those who wait - "Odottavan aika on pitkä", close to "a watched pot never boils", referring to how long a wait can feel 3:57 But in the end... - "Lopussa kiitos seisoo", you get your praise in the end, close to "all's well that ends well" 4:10 He who reaches for a spruce - "Joka kuuseen kurkottaa se katajaan kapsahtaa", meaning you'll fall low if you aim too high 4:16 He has kicked empty - "Hän on potkaissut tyhjää", same as kicking the bucket i.e. dying 4:29 A fox never runs out of tricks - "Ei ketulta keinot lopu", referring to how a sly fox has many tricks up its sleeve 4:42 No use crying in the dark place - variation of "ei auta itku markkinoilla", literally "no use crying in the marketplace", referring to situations where crying and complaining is useless 4:43 What's has been gone, has gone. - "Mikä on ollutta, on mennyttä", what's gone is gone 4:48 But trouble doesn't look like this - "Ei hätä ole tämän näköinen", a phrase to cheer up and to point out the positive in a dark situation 4:59 You can never know... - "Ei sitä koskaan tiedä, missä puussa piru istuu", you cannot know who or what to trust 5:42 “Ai että nyt on kyllä joo” - Oh yeah, now that’s something 5:37 (Laittoi pojat jenkkakoneet soimaan, saatana) - The boys put the jenkka [a type of folk dance/music] machines on, goddammit 6:12 (Jumalauta) - Goddammit, literally shortened version of “God help” 6:17 (Ei muuta kun) - Nothing but 6:17 Onwards, said the granny in the snow - “Eteenpäin, sanoi mummo lumessa” meaning it’s no time to stop and worry, you should just move on 6:22 When the panic is biggest, the help is also near - “Kun hätä on suurin, on apukin lähellä” meaning help is always close in the worst situations 6:29 Fearing the master is the root of wisdom - “Herranpelko on viisauden alku”, from the Bible’s Psalm 111:10: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of a wisdom” 6:44 (Perkele! Sehän olisikin) Damn, that would be something! 7:00 Yötön yö - Nightless night, the Finnish expression for the period of the midnight sun 7:11 Is there a bottom to this rumor? - “Onko tässä huhussa perää”, is there any truth in the rumor 7:17 Well-planned is half-done - “Hyvin suunniteltu on puoliksi tehty”, equivalent to “well begun is half done” 7:25 (mikä se valokuva oli) light pictures - “What was that photo”, and light pictures is a literal translation of the Finnish word for a photograph (with extra meaning in the context of Alan Wake) 7:47 We loop around… - “Ympäri käydään yhteen tullaan”, a little bit like “what comes around goes around”. Said when encountering someone again by chance 8:06 Water is the oldest balm - “Vesi vanhin voitehista” referring to the healing properties of water. From Finland’s national epic Kalevala 8:07 Water finds its way - “Kyllä vesi tiensä löytää”, meaning the water will naturally follow its course without intervening 8:12 What water brings… - “Minkä vesi tuo, sen vesi vie”. A more common version (that’s also the name of a classic song] refers to wind, not water. Meaning how things come and go on their own 8:31 Now there’s a devil in the fish trap - “Nyt on piru merrassa” is similar to “devil to pay” in English meaning that the events have led to a very bad situation 8:54 The matter is a steak - “Asia on pihvi”, the thing is now finished, agreed upon, or simply clear 9:00 Now comes the end of the rhyme - probably based on “lorun loppu”, which literally means the end of a poem, used like “end of story” in English And of course, Ahti is the god or spirit of water in the old Finnish mythology :)

I m obsessed with the line "The work will instruct its maker" Because it seems to hint that Ahti is "The Work" and the maker is "Tom / Alan"... Thus it does seem like Ahti might be an insert character the author uses to move the plot forward and act as a mentor when he needs a hand... That coupled with the lines in Control where it seems like Wake also was the one that wrote Jessie into the FBC and created an "Alien Threat" aka the hiss, plus having Ahti in there to move the plot and help set up Jessie really makes it seem like maybe a huge portion of Control was caused by the Author's actions . Maybe in his desperation Wake realised he was fighting something too big for himself to handle, so he shuffled someone he knew as Jessie into the FCB, creating an opening and a threat to the bureau and guiding her through Ahti so that when the story calls for it, the FBC can show up with it's new Director to help wake with his current problems. I mean, he seemed pretty good at forcing Saga and Casey into this narrative and rewriting their life stories and narrative so they can accomplish his goals after all.

That's the thing, Ahti breaks the fourth wall, Mr Door also does it... and that means they are detached with the narrative, they have their own agenda. If Alan Wake is so powerful to a point of manipulating godlike beings because he has the creative control of the lake (Sam Lake is so snarky), that makes him a less interesting character in my pov and I guess Sam Lake is aware about this. Seems obvious Wake (Sam Lake) wrote Saga, Tor, Odin, Alex Casey, Jesse, etc.. these characters are all caricatures, however, Saga seems to be the daughter of Mr. Door, so she is fictional and not fictional at the same time, that's a classic mindfuck, because Alan Wake himself is fictional, Thomas Zane wrote Wake into existence. And idk if it was on purpose or not... probably not, but the fact Saga sounds like a robot the entire game, that only reinforces the idea of her being fictional (but I guess she is just a horrendous actress, simple as that, the contrast between Mr Door being so charismatic and Saga being so robotic, it's amusing, a great actor directly related with a terrible actress)

Ahti’s line “Water is the memory of the world” feels incredibly important in explaining why the Dark Place is so strongly tied to creative works and why he can move through it so freely. If the lake is actually an ocean, of course a sea god should be able to move through it.

It might have deeper meaning and chosen on purpose, tho the water quotes are old finnish idioms. "Kyllä vesi tiensä löytää" = water finds its way. "Vesi vanhin voitehista" = water is the oldest balm. So this is what Ahti was doing on his vacation. Hopefully his assistant (Jesse) will come for dlc

Yep, the Lake is a fraction of Ahti (considering he is the God of water, it's a natural correlation). Thomas Zane was messing around with the Lake, created Alan Wake who created the FBC and Jesse Faden, etc.. Ahti had to interfere. And I think it's cool how Alan was so desperate for help, he wrote Jesse for that, but Ahti ends up helping him instead, to estabilize the goddamn Lake who was such a mess because of these over the top "artists". As for the DLC, most likely it will be centered around Tim Breaker (Time/Quantum Breaker) dealing with Mr. Door (maybe the God of time himself or the first time breaker). Now that Alan is free, Jesse has no purpose... so I guess Sam Lake is coming up with a justification to Control 2, it will take years

Agent Eztevez state that they are the only backup available at the moment, as the others FBC agents are occupied with the problem at the HQ. It's possible that The Oldest House is still dealing with some sort of Hiss problem (or maybe a new threat altogether), making Jesse unable to help with the recent Bright Falls AWE. Maybe Control 2 will uncover what Jesse dealing with at the time of Alan Wake 2 events.

@@rocketman-766 It seems to me that Ahti was grumpy because of these "artists" messing up with the lake, considering his direct corelation with water, I guess it's a safe bet to connect Ahti with the lake. As for Alan creating stuff, it's honestly hard to interpret it, Zane created Alan... But not really. Alan created Max Payne... But not really, etc.. I dont think the game give a definitive answer to that. Saga did acted like a robot through the game, maybe that was a deficiency of the voice actress, maybe she acts like a linear character because she is not really human (sames goes for Jesse, her story seems guided on purpose)

Warlin Door is angry with Alan/Tom because not only can he change reality, Door has no idea how he is doing it and that was the purpose of the shows as Door was probi g Alan trying to figure out just how the hell he is doing it, and also angry because he dragged Saga into it. Wake’s reality manipulation powers rival Door’s and he isn’t the only one either as Breaker/Joyce also has the ability p, however Breaker seems to be in fog and is unaware that he and Joyce and every other version of himself and Faden/Wilder are all the same persons. Door trapped Breaker/Joyce in the Dark Place to help Alan, and to also make sure he cant interfere with what he (Door) is doing.

I was playing Control less than a year ago, had to delete it for memory space requirements. It was a choice I was forced to and never got to finish it. Going back to where I was and start over is a long process, maybe I will watcha movie that includes all cutscenes.

What is the quote he says as you walk away while he is by the juke box? Something about not rushing that I liked.

What will happen to the oldest house without its janitor? Unless he is still there and have some projection powers.

I guess he teleported to Bright Falls because that required his immediate attention, after all, if he is the God of water it only makes sense the Lake is a fraction of Ahti... and Thomas Zane is messing around with the Lake, here it comes Alan Wake, etc.. Ahti had to interfere. Alan wrote Jesse Faden into existence to help him, but the help comes from Ahti, who trained Jesse to keep things under control until Ahti stabilized the Lake

@@casuallydeep There is one with saga that if you go on the Old Gods of Asgard quest, upstairs if you wait, he will go sit on the bed and starts questioning himself about things, implying that he is being drawn into the story that Alan created without his own will, and wanted to be on vacation.

The uncanny valley is more noticeable on younger characters (even so, Disney screwed things up in Rogue One... well, hard to imagine Disney not screwing things up)

Was this captured on consoles? The defective lip syncing was so distracting on PC, I wonder if this is a thing on other platforms as well... seems to be the case, hope they fix this eventually. Anyway, I like how he calls Alan Wake as "Tom", because Wake is pretty much a "clone" of Thomas Zane, Ahti recognizes his supernatural origins, Wake was written into existence by Zane to free him from the Dark Place, but the artist's new perspective ends up taking over and "killing" Zane at the end. I know Zane is supposed to be alive, while helping Darling to escape, but I think this is just a silly joke because these dudes are all the same "person", Zane is the physical form, Alan Wake is a clone of the physical form with the voice of Darling, it's the kind of silly meta language that wound sound condescending if Kojima was involved, but Sam Lake is more humble. And of course, to fake out the audience, "Tom" is a generic depiction that a old janitor could use to speed up communication, but it actually has a "deeper" meaning and blablabla I recognize the mockery of Sam Lake, it's pretty cool indeed, Alan Wake deserves praise on this regard, a shame the puzzles are so basic and the combat is fucking terrible

The symbol on that door, does it lead to the motel from control, i havent played alan wake 2 yet
@CompositeCreativity3 ай бұрын
You do go to an Oceanview Hotel in the Dark Place during Alan's segments (which, despite the name, is not the motel location from Control). However, that door with the spiral leads to the very end of the game in Alan Wake 2.
