I got snowed into a house with a wood burning stove one winter in New Hampshire, and listed to about 7 hours worth of Alan Watts after the sun went down with the only light coming from the fire. It was an amazing and surreal experience.

Would you recommend that book? Is it worth the read? I’m going through the most difficult time in my life at 68, and I need something. I’m chronically ill, full of anxiety, and depressed because of a few severe forms of tick-borne illnesses, which generally ve me malaria symptoms, and so is my grown son, who let his treatment slip, and is in jail, money is extremely tight because of his mania, my fiancée dropped me because he can’t face reality, and I’m alone and disabled (not that you’d know it on the outside). There’s WAY more to this, but I hate this part of my life, and I’ve always been optimistic, and have hope for a better future. Thank you!!!

This is the big secret (and Watts said it many times): you don't control your thoughts. You don't control your feelings. Aka, you can't choose what you're going to think of next without already thinking of it. Similarly, you don't know how you're going to feel about anything until you do actually feel - sensations aren't chosen, they arise in the body. We learn, yes. We have preferences. I don't know if our thoughts are 'just' a product of our biology / environment or if they're given to us by God or what. It almost wouldn't matter - because a thought is a thing experienced. And thus we get to it: what then, is choice and free will? We have our own preferences and we like to think that we're not puppets, and fine. But what would choice even be? To 'choose' (do) the thing you prefer, right? Except you didn't choose what you prefer. That preference that you have about anything - you didn't choose to have it. You just have it. Just like you can't choose to learn. You take in information but you don't go into your brain and rewire it to finally 'get' whatever it is you didn't get previously. See - choice doesn't exist. Options exist, yes. Action exists. Consequences exist. Learning exists. We all have a conscience and that's never going away, even if it's not always right. But at a fundamental level, we're not choosing. We're experiencing our thoughts and our feelings and the consequences of our actions. And so then what is the ego, if choice doesn't exist? Not much, if anything. But does that mean you'll wake up? Who knows - it's not up to you. Watch and see. Would you remove the obstacles from the path of the protagonist in your favorite story? Neither would anyone else. Why expect life to be any different?

Through experience one can come to a state of mind and being where you make peace with the past, accept the present and welcome the future. I’m constantly struggling to buy groceries and constantly struggling to pay rent and now that I’m home schooling my sons I’m struggling to buy their school supplies. But even in hard times we must choose to have faith. As christians that’s all we can do. No matter your struggle, we can turn to God. He knows us personally and can give us strength to overcome our challenges. Humans derive meaning and understanding through the narratives they weave, for it is within stories that they find purpose and significance. These narratives, in turn, are crafted through the medium of words, each word a vessel carrying its own unique resonance and power. Yet, within the realm of language, there exists the potential for corruption-a distortion that arises as sounds are transmuted into symbols and syntax. However, amidst this labyrinth of linguistic complexity, there exists a realm of purity-a sanctuary of unadulterated expression. This realm is found within the harmonious cadence of music, where sound transcends the limitations of language, resonating directly with the soul. In music, there lies an essence untouched by the confines of linguistic corruption-a primal purity that speaks to the deepest recesses of the human spirit.

Beautiful, spent half of my life in the art world, and I'm a cat hair from being homeless. We don't care, it doesn't matter.

Ignore my last comment. I just found out Alan Watts died in 1973. Is this lecture from beyond the grave? He is only about 108. I'm in total shock.

I'm confused as to how the title & thumbnail relate to the video's message 😅🤔
