Water pump replacement, top radiator hose replacement as the hose is ballooned on the housing it fits onto due to a build up of crap...the hose could split and leak if left.
best way i know how to bleed the air from the cooling system after refilling with new coolant.

Try poking a screwdriver or hose hook in the rear hose, rather than removing it. This saves removing it completely and saves wasting coolant. Poke it in at the top if you can for maximum bleed effect. Also, after a minute or so, bring the revs up to 3k or so. This has a huge effect on the water flow and helps with bleeding immensely. Cheers Alan.

That is a very useful video for a Mk 3 Duratec owner as I am. Never drained the coolant in 17 years but my mileage is 79,000. That one you have look is very good condition bodily but the engine looks dirtier than mine.

When I did my 2005 focus I put a fluid transfer hand pump inline with the small bleeder hoses that enter the top of the coolant tank. Flow direction from engine to tank. then pump away like a 15 year old schoolboy. Get a good suction on the engine side, You will hear the air bubbles break free from inside the head and block. Then do your normal engine start up and bleed. This gives you a bit of a head start on removing the air if you haven't got a full on vacuum fill rig . My 2 cents worth. And there is only HALF the room in a Focus compared to a Mondeo!!!!! Taking the headlight out when doing anything at that end of the block really helps.

Alan , another top tip m8, that does work, fill expansion tank up to brim , then blow hard in the tank to push water down and then help burp it by squeezing pipes.

Alan - buy a battery wrench.. Had a guy in yesterday collecting a bus I fixed - he maintains a huge fleet of mini-busses, no idea how many they have - loads, endless - we'd to bang a new battery onto the bus I'd fixed - I fix the stuff nobody else wants to/can - I handed him my battery wrench. Battery on, done, in 10 seconds.. He stood staring at my ickle battery wrench - he has one but his is a big crappy version - mine is ickle & strong. His fits in nowhere, mine fits in everywhere - and it saves endless hours every week turning spanners/ratchets/screwdrivers. His garage has probably a hundred grand in tools to maintain their fleet - but he'd missed the battery ratchet benefits. "Bloody hell J, that's some yoke.." was his take.. Muchos gratitudos for the vid btw - great info as always.

My mk4 duratec has done 164k miles and looking back now probably should have changed the pump when Iinstalled a new drive belt kit but I think I did that at about 125k. Surprising how the miles rack up.

Hi Alan, nice video! Does the 2004 Mondeo ST220 V6 3L Duratec self bleed from air? Ive had some problems with the cooling system, it simply overflows and spits out coolant from the expansion cap randomly when im driving. ive tried driving it with the cap off and its way better but sometimes it still wants to spit coolant out. the fans and everything works fine. ive flushed the whole system more than enough now and it looks really clean. Im thinking maybe it is the topend gasket that leaks compression pressure maybe? The water pressure in the system is very high. blew one of my hoses (the hose u were replacing. My hose was too short, I replaced it with a longer one and its all good now ) i Would be really greatful if my st220 doesnt self bleed :) //All the best from Sweden!

Unfortunately some engines now you have to vacuum fill them, impossible to fill them without vacuum filling them. Like I’m working on a Jaguar F type at the moment, the intercooler is highest part of the system but there’s no bleed points on it so all the air accumulates in the intercoolers and barely any coolant fills them. Can pull the pipe off with engine off and hardly any coolant comes out when they should be full of coolant.

when those engines get on a bit they can burn oil but one thing to do when checking the oil...if you pull the dipstick out it may have no oil on it...put it back in the tube and pull it out again and you may well find the oil is on the level..its just a strange thing when checking the oil on those engines

Hey alan, I've got a mk5 mondeo, I think I have Air lock after changing the thermostat, Is the bleed procedure similar for the mk5? People have suggested parking on a hill and running car with cap off but it doesn't work, the coolant just bubbles when at temprature
@alan4x

the mk5 2litre engines self bleed..if your cooling system is pressurising then you could have head gasket issues..best get it checked out

@@alan4x done a sniff test and liquid didn't change colour, no coolant or oil mixing, no exhaust smoke, all the hoses get hot apart from the rear thermostat hose going into bulkhead, heaters are cold, also no coolant coming out leak pipe, could it be water pump?

there should be a constant stream of water coming from the thermostat into the expansion tank with engine running...if not then yes i would say the water pump impeller has become detached

the 2 litre duratorq diesel in the mk3 has a bleed screw on top of the water pump which you need to unscrew to release the air..then the rest is pretty much self bleeding
