Everything you have mentioned relates to my situation,the garage computer read low fuel pressure and unfortunately he said there was metal filings and bits of rubber in the fuel system which as you point out could well be a broken spring in the high pressure fuel pump,really appreciate this video and it gives me a base to start as I'm going to do the work myself now thanks.

Great video Alan. However, I have a MK4 Mondeo doing the same. I can drive along happily with or without my caravan on the back for hours and then "engine malfunction" it's in limp mode. The problem after watching the video is I don't get any kind of faulty fuel codes. However, changing the fuel filter was on my list last week and so I will change that because I missed that out when I did a mini service and my guess is it's unlikely to have been changed for years. Long before I ever had the car anyway. The last code it did show was U0010 Body Control Module on the MS CAN so I'm researching that at the mo although I suspect it has nothing to do with the car "taking a dump in to limp mode". Many thanks for all your informative - sometimes funny video's.

I had a similar issue with my old Mondeo 1.8 tdci. Every 29k miles or so the engine would not rev over about 3500 revs. If I held my foot hard down the exhaust would emit a huge amount of white smoke which is a symptom of weak fuel to air ratio. Even though the filters were well below the service interval this always occurred. Replacing the filters at the lower mileage of 25k never saw a repeat of the issue.

I had the same problem with a Ford Galaxy 2013 TDI and Seat Leon 2009 TDI. The problem was the VNT turbo vanes sticking due to excess soot buildup which happens due too much town driving. On a motorway when you put your foot down, the turbo vanes try to open up to let more air in but because they get stuck half way, the engine goes in to limp mode since the boost is incorrect. Could be fuel filter but If a code reader shows something about under or overboost then it's 100% a turbo vane problem. Search for VNT vanes sticking....

Alan mate, I've got a mk3 ford focus 2013 1.6 tdci and I've got something similar to this. It goes into limp mode after reaching about 40mph then when u switch the engine on and off, the fault dissapears again. The fault code I get is P2599 Turbocharger boost control position sensor - A performance - stuck high. I've swapped out the map sensor, boost solenoid sensor, Vacuum solenoid valve, turbo actuator position sensor and still the same. I've also done a service on it changing all the filters including fuel filter and still nothing. I'm thinking it's the turbo actuator itself that's faulty eventhough it was tested by a local mechanic and seemed to hold pressure well. Ive also checked if the actuator moves when starting the engine and it does. No smoke from the exhaust whatsoever! However, I also have a coolant issue so could it be going into limp to avoid overheating? I had a water leak from the waterpump but I ended up changing the thermostat aswell as the water pump. The leaking has stopped but the coolant keeps going down and there is pressure in the reservoir tank. It rises up the minute I open it even if it looks empty. The heater blows warm air as normal, no overheating, no coolant boiling and no milked residue on the oil cap. Apologies for the lengthy message pall but I can't seem to fix the issue so I thought id try and ask someone who has brilliant knowledge and experience like yourself. Keep up the vids mate! 👌🏽

Hi Alan, My mondeo 2.0 tdci (150hp) goes into limp mode around 70-80mph (when I de-accelerate to slow down) and always get either: DTC P1102:21-Е4 Mass Air Flow Sensor In Range But Lower Than Expected or PO6DD:00-EC Engine Oil Pressure Control Circuit Performance/Stuck Off. Never got both codes at the same time. It’s only one of them and always put the car in limp mode. It always happens when the car is doing 70-80mph or when the RPM is between 3000-4000k as soon as I release the accelerator to slow down. It’s always one of the DTC but along any of these DTCs I always get DTC U3003:68-08 Battery Voltage. Apart from getting the injectors test I pretty much done everything i.e oil pressure switch, MAF sensor, oil pressure solenoid, air intake and boost leat checks but nothing has fixed the issue. Yesterday I did the loose timing chain tested as you suggested and also checked the timing chain via oil cap with pick & hook tool and it’s really loose. My question is if the loose timing chain can cause limp mode only when I release the accelerator whilst doing 70-80mph or when the revs are between 3000-4000? After restarting the engine the car is out of limp mode till it all happens again.
@alan4x7 ай бұрын
hi, I am guessing you have a mk5 Mondeo ...if the timing chain is loose that is not good and that along with the chain tensioner will need to be replaced soon however you say you replaced the oil pressure switch....right next to the oil pressure switch is what's called an oil pressure solenoid which is a very common cause of putting the engine into limp mode and is why you are getting the code p0600 oil pressure control circuit stuck....those solenoids cost around £120 from ford
@mmalik10277 ай бұрын
@@alan4x thank you sir for your reply. I replaced MAF, fuel filter, air filter, oil pressure switch and solenoid as well but the car still goes into limp mode between 70-80mph or between 3000-4000 rpm. I’m just wondering if the loose timing chain can cause limp mood at high speed/rev? To be honest the timing chain is very loose and car mileage is 192k (it had new clutch, fly wheel, thermostat housing, egr cooler housing, brakes etc not long ago) and don’t know if timing chain is worth getting changed unless it may also fix the limp mode issue.
@alan4x7 ай бұрын
if your chain is very loose it is because the nylon guides have fallen apart and the loose chain will cause the valve timing to be incorrect which will case running issues for sure. It is not certain that the chain is the cure to your problem but the chain will soon break so it’s advisable to do it while it’s still working

My 2014 S-Max 2.0L 163hp at cold start (+5hrs after stop) starts up briefly and then dies until turned over 5-10 times after which it runs fine, no issues. Hot starting is normal. I tested fuel pressure and cant see an issue, I tested leak from individual injectors: Perfect. If I measure the flow from the common return line engine ticking over I get like a liter / minut! If I try to suck the return line using my little hand-vacuum pump, all I get is air. I went through the plastic lines and cant find any fault. It seems like there is some sort of an internal leak in the return line where it exits the cylinder head. It appears there is a connection in the cast aluminum of the head, where the little "manifold line" connects and exits to the larger line outside of the cylinder head to the return line through the green snap coupling. I am stuck here, because I dont want to mess to much with the pump and all that, when the engine is otherwise running well. Any idea? Thums up for your excellent and pretty amusing videos

Hi Alan I'm having same issues with my Ford Fiesta 1.5 TDCI 2014. When I try to overtake someone sometimes the car goes into limp mode. Also I noticed when accelerate black smoke comes out of the exhaust. I went to an authorized Ford for diagnostics and they told me that the high pressure pump needs to be replaced. But I asked what code the ECU was reporting and they said it was reporting P228C Fuel Pressure Regulator 'A' Exceeded Control Limits - Pressure Too Low. After that I went to the mechanic to replace the fuel filter, I bought the original one and put it on. Replacing the fuel filter did not solve the problem. My next step is to check all the injectors as you explained in the video. If the injectors are good, should I change the fuel pressure regulator or would you advise me something else?
@alan4x2 жыл бұрын
hi, chances are one or more of your injectors are leaking too much fuel off back to the tank and causing the low fuel pressure code but if after a leak off test you find the injectors to be ok then you would be looking at replacing the high pressure fuel pump.....the fuel pressure regulator is doing its job in reading the fuel pressure is outside of its limits

Alan, I’ve got a great material for You to make another video. I have 2.0tdci dw10f engine in my Focus and I was fighting with P1102 - Mass Airflow Sensor in Range But Lower Than Expected. This problem is very, very rare. Starts showing in last winter. Sometimes it comes back after 1000km, sometimes even more, Three is no rule. Only thing is, when it happens - when I throttle up, using high rpm, everything is fine. But when i let throttle off, low rpm, error comes back. As I said this happens very rarely. What I’ve done to this day: check mass airflow sensor, replaced with new one - no results. Replaced egr valve - still the same, that cost me badly… Replaced MAP - No changes. Also I’ve replaced all vacum pipes and turbo vacum valve - No error from that time but car still has a low boost (I forgot to mention that my live readings from diagnostic tool shows low air flow and low air pressure - I’ve compared those readings with ‚healthy’ Focus and mine, both are too low - for example turbo boost is 2.3bar and my pal has 2.6bar… Those readings even after vacum replace are still bad). Searching on internet I’ve found one topic telling that something mat be connected with cambelt (and 40000km ago my mechanic changes cambelt). So I’v removed cover, lock camshaft, but when I tried to lock crankshaft in flywhell hole, it wont line up perfectly - it is about a half of a tooth difference to perfect lineup to slide the lock. Also tensioner is not perfect - arrow is not in that small window, so the tension is a little bit to small. Maybe there is a reason? Or maybe turbo is saing ‚bye, bye’? Or injecors not giving enough fuel -> to low fumes pressure to speed the turbo up? What do You think? Any suggestions?
@alan4x2 жыл бұрын
theres a lot to think about there lol, i would definitely get the cam belt timing sorted first as half a tooth out on a diesel can cause some strange running behaviour but its easier to get the crank locked first with the timing pin so you can see how far out the camshaft sprocket is
@silastypol2 жыл бұрын
Well, a few days ago I’ve put brand new INA cambelt set. I did it as You show in video. Locked camshaft, locked crankshaft, belt lined up perfect. But when I’ve put everything together, set the tensioner, etc, made 4 engine revs clockwise - crankshaft locking pin fits perfect but camshaft not as smooth as in Your video. So, changing the situation - turn engine a little and fit cambelt locking pin to fit perfect, I cannot put in the crankshaft locking pin - it is still about a half of a tooth of a crankshaft and unable to slide in. It’s really not much but it is. I’ve done everything as ETIS said. By the way - car runnig good, nothing wrong with cambelt as far I see. But still turbo air pressure from MAP is 2.3bar instead 2.6-2.7 when accelerating hard. Maybe my cambelt was and is OK, but the problem is with turbo or injector?
@alan4x2 жыл бұрын
@@silastypol very difficult one..might be worth getting your turbo itself looked at...i believe its a variable vane turbo which can get stuck with soot build up and cause intermittent issues

@@alan4x Yeah, it’s vvt turbo. Maybe geometry is stuck a little, refusing to load more than 2.3 bar. But, You know what? We can reject the trail with wrong cambelt set - my friend made a cambelt change last week, and same situation as in mine car - it was not perfect on the locks, run good as hell… How to check injectors in dw10f engine without removing it? Only leak off test? Do You have an e-mail adress? I really like to talk with You and sent some dynamic logs, it will be much easier for me to text You there.

I'm carrying laptop with forscan on it, took me a while to catch this codes. Not sure what garage can do without codes. So far I replaced turbo boost solenoid (used), 2 MAF sensors (used), air filter is new. MAP and throttle body is clean. I can see turbo actuator is moving, and it moves when I take vacuum pipe off. Not sure what's next. And for some reason all 3 MAFs reading 1.86v with engine not running. Could be forscan issue. Have you got any idea Alan? Much appreciated

Hi Alan. Your videos are very informative. I have a mk5 2.0 diesel. I have faults codes P228C:00-28 and P02FA:68-28. The car doesn’t go into limp mode, it just completely shuts down ( I’ve had a few scary moments ). Not sure why it doesn’t go into limp mode. I have had fuel filter replaced and fuel pressure sensor. I still have the issue. However can be over 1000 miles between it reoccurring. Went to skeg vegas and back last week with fully loaded car with no issues.
@optyqus Жыл бұрын
Hi! Did you sorted it it? I basically have the same 2 errors, only a slight difference, mines are P228C:00-68, the other one is exactly like yours P02FA:68-28. Had 2 engine shutdowns in the course of a week. However my car does go into limp mode. After the 1st shutdown I did replaced the fuel filter.
@ajmairsingh7644 Жыл бұрын
Hi @@optyqus , after replacing the fuel pressure sensor the shut down only happened the day after it was replaced. It has not occurred again in the 5000 miles since it the fuel pressure sensor was replaced. However, I made the following changes, a. I now only use premium diesel & b. i try to keep the revs below 2500 rpm. I have a powershift so it does this by itself unless i accelerate hard. My fear is it it is still high pressure fuel pump issue.
@optyqus Жыл бұрын
@@ajmairsingh7644 thanks for replying... funny thing is that my first shutdown happened the next day after a 30liter fill up from a certain gas station. The second shutdown occured a few days later, and after changing the fuel filter already. I don't know if the fuel was at fault but it might be. Also, did you do a test to see if any of the injectors throws too much fuel on the leak pipe? This is the next thing I'm planing to do on mine. It's quite easy too, you only need some seringes and some tubes, but the problem is unlatching the original plastic pins that hold the leak lines in place, as they break quite easily. Mine is a powershift too. Oh, and I strongly suggest you to also check the MAF sensor and have it cleaned; dirty airflow sensor can cause lean runs and fuel pressure drops.

Could faulty injectors cause a ticking noise? My car ticks away when i do a cold start and stops ticking when the engine is warm or has been driven for 5minutes, garage say it's normal but friends who have heard it ask me what's wrong with my car 🤯 i know the chain is fine, well on the assumption if the chain was slack it would make the noise constantly and it is a different kind of noise i suppose, i only ask because if i use a long screwdriver and hold it to the injectors and listen, it's the same noise i can hear with the bonnet closed Thanks

Hi Alan, I doubt you’ll see this but if this manages to reach you, I really need your help. I have a 2ltr cdti kuga. (Sorry it’s not a Mondeo) with high fuel pressure and engine cutting out in high revs? I’ve been chasing this issue for a while. Things done so far. Changed fuel filter Changed high pressure fuel pump & regulator. Changed high pressure sensor. Done leak off test. None of this made any change. Car gives up fault code. P11169 (fuel pressure in range but high) but when restarted after stall. Code clears and goes back to normal. 2012 tdci. AWd 136kw I’m now thinking it must be some kind of blockage in return pipes or blocked injector. (Tho leak off test seemed ok ) I don’t like the sound of ECU issues Causing high pressure build up. If revs are kept below 4k, car runs perfect in lower range . Starts perfect. Idles perfect. Just thought I would throw it to you and see if you can suggest anything. I’ve been pulling my hair out and I’m skint now Thanks

bolted into your oil filter housing assembly is an oil pressure switch and a oil pressure control solenoid...these solenoids play up and cause the engine to go into limp mode...best thing is to clear the code..have it fault again..if it is the same code and it does relate to the oil pressure control solenoid then just replace it

Did you ever find out what was causing the issue with your rising oil level. With me, the car keeps doing regens after say 250kms and after 1000kms the System Service light comes on indicating it is time to change the oil again. Any pointers would be very much appreciated as the car has been off the road for months now. Runs like a train, but does blow a little smoke that can be seen in the headlights of cars behind at night. Downunder there are not many of these engines around and I can't find anyone to resolve the issue. Any pointers would be brilliant.

Hi Alan. I’ve brought this Mondeo mk5 2016 2.0 diesel 150hp like 1.5 years ago and it started from 3th week to vibrate il 6 gear and enter limb mode after climbing or accelerate harder, I’ve been to a garage and they didn’t find the problem, then I’ve been to a ford garage and they told me to change timing belt and everything that deals with fuel like injectors fuel pump high pressure pump fuel tank, after time passes it started vibrating harder and at lower gears, right now it’s vibrating in 2 gear. Until now I’ve been to 3 Ford garages and 11 other garages and they couldn’t find a problem. After car stops I have lots of errors from battery to high pressure pump injectors air abs system. Every time. I also mention that I have no engine light or any lights on dashboard. Do you know what could it be. Kind regards.

Alan, I agree this is probably fuel related but seeing as though this is a 210 ps engine it will have the powershift auto gearbox. Hi hope i can help. I currently own a cat S car and as long you have checked that the damage is professionally repaired to a high standard it should be ok. Another thing to note is that if it is cat S then that most likely means that there was structural damage for example the chassis could be bent. Make sure to have it fully checked from underneath aswell before buying. Other than that categorised cars are very affordable rather than a hpi clear one and they also hold value better as theyre already cheap
