Those shorts were fairly standard in the '80s, especially for stuff like jogging. There was a guy in the neighborhood that I grew up in who roller skated every day that weather allowed and it was always in those tiny shorts and a tight tank top...unless it was really hot, and then he wore no shirt. Just some take-aways: Peter’s Aunt Martha should be the villain of the story because as a psychiatrist, she knew the harm in forcing a female identity onto Peter, but she wanted a daughter in “Angela” too much to care. I love Aunt Martha’s house. Why go to camp when you can watch tv and listen to mom? Peter knew on a level that Aunt Martha didn’t realize that Peter couldn’t pass as Angela even as a kindergarten kid. He and Angela had spied on their Dad and his boyfriend making love and saw that their bodies were alike. Later, Peter and Angela had played post office and would’ve realized their differences.

@@AlandaParker Sounds like it might be a reference to a scene from _Return to Sleepaway Camp_ (2008), a direct sequel to the original film. They also made _Sleepaway Camp 2_ and 3 in the late '80s, but _Return_ didn't acknowledge those. Just to warn you, none of the sequels are anywhere near as good as the original. They might be worth a look eventually, but there are plenty of better horror films out there that deserve to be seen first, like the first two _Psycho_ films, and the first two _Child's Play_ films.

Your reactions in this video were hilarious. Also, my husband and I always agree that the true villain of the movie is the aunt and that a prequel movie about her would be fantastic. I mean, the way the actress portrayed her was probably just inexperience but it added to tragedy that is Angela/Peter. In a very symbolic way, the aunt murdered Peter which, more so then the boat accident, set this whole thing in motion.

That scene with angela being pointed at by the boy in the bed was her fighting the realization that she was really a boy. It was him telling herself, "You're not really a girl...why you're kissing/stop kissing that boy". *That's some S+ tier 80's trauma right there.* BTW, if you liked this, in your free time you should check out a 1980 flick called "Dressed to Kill" starring Michael Caine and directed by Brian De Palma...lol, trust me. @Brooklyn Bleek ok...🙄😒...okay I think I follow you. And I think just-🙄😖- according to your own logic I think you meant to say in the second sentence "It was him/her telling him/herself 'You're not really a BOY' ". Cuz, like you said he/she was trying to fight the reality of his/her own Boyness in order to make the kiss okay. So what you're saying is the pointing is Peter telling himself, As he's being kissed by another boy, "This is okay. Because you're not really a boy. You're a Girl. You are what you've been raised to be. You're THAT" *points at girl sister* "Be THAT. Be a girl." 🙄🤔Yeah that makes sense. I mean, as much sense as anything in this movie can make🤷‍♂️

This is one of my favorites. As low budget as the film is, the special effects are indeed top notch. The sequels on the other hand.....not so much. The plot twist at the end was highly controversial for the day, but still shocks even by today's standards. They made a mold of the actress's face and put it on a male college kid to get the shot. He requested to be drunk before hand because he was nervous about being nude.

@@egglady a common problem with remastering onto blu ray with a lot of films actually- lighting levels are changed sometimes to too bright to reveal something meant to be obscure, other times too dark to cover up something that should be more clearly seen. That's why sometimes owning a DVD or even VHS of the movie comes in handy to actually see the proper version with original lighting/cinematography. HD can be a very mixed blessing sometimes.

Thank you so much for watching this movie while considering the era in which it was made. Men in short shorts and no such thing as cgi for the effects was normal in those days. The artists who did the post-kill shots were on the same caliber as the ones who did the "living dead" zombie movies to come. Make up artists were amazing back then. I'm glad you appreciated their art and didn't find it 'bad' or 'dated.' I idolized those artists growing up and miss them in modern film-making. I also enjoyed your take on the subject matter of the film itself. I'm glad and relieved that this movie didn't upset or offend you. I was a stupid kid when this movie came out so I had no idea how polarizing the film would be 4 decades later. I just saw it as a "bad guys who deserve to die do die and I'm glad" horror movie with a twist ending. For me, it was what The Sixth Sense ended up being when that movie came out. Revisiting this movie as an adult, I still feel the same way. Except now I can feel sympathy for stupid young hormonal Paul (?) wanting to make it to second base with a "girl" so he could be like the other boys. When I was younger, I hated him pressuring "Angela" and was glad he got the ending he got. Being nice to "the girl" gave him no right to push when she said no. As a preteen I wanted him dead after that first scene when he had her on her back, even without knowing how the movie would end. As an adult, I'm sorry he died for his hormones, but I still sympathize with the main protagonist. And I'm nostalgically attached to this campy old horror film so it's nice to simply watch someone who doesn't read too much into it. The world was very different in those days, for good or worse.

The mustache - the actor thought he had completed his scenes and shaved so they had to improvise for one scene. Unfortunately that scene happened to be a closeup. Also - the officer doesn't even seem phased by the inconsistency between drowning in the lake and being found 20' away from the water hidden under a boat. Overall I really love this film. Thanks for checking it out. 2 and 3 are decent attempts to carry the franchise, but obviously since Angela's "secret" is already out of the bag that bit of shock value isn't really a prominent factor. They also switched actresses from Felissa Rose to Pamela Springsteen and the sequels have more of a campy vibe to them. ✌

It's not my favorite franchise, however unlike the Nightmare, Friday, or Halloween series where a part of me rooted for the survival of most of the victims, the contrast is true for this series. One of the absolute best low budget/indie films of the 1980’s (Great cast great location, the writing is really good for what it is) The two follow up sequels are really good also Angela is a very unique Slasher Villain because she is a victim too! Yes!!! As a child of the 80s I'm glad you checked out this classic. So to break it down the real Angela died and her brother was the Angela (aka the Killer) we see through the move. Basically I always felt like he was indoctrinated by his crazy Aunt. The actress who played Angela Felissa Rose Esposito is a real sweet heart though. They made couple of sequels too. But you did a great job analyzing this movie. I first saw this move when I was 7.

(I am writing this as if the movie is it's own entity, knowing that Angela is 100% Angela in the other films, this is all just critical interpretation, and if I am misled or reaching bad conclusions, please let me know) I feel like this movie is a message against enforced gender roles. Aunt Martha forced Peter to live as Angela against his will and look what happened. It was a forced gender dysphoria that left already traumatized Peter completely broken. If Martha had accepted that Angela was Peter all along none of this would have happened. So really, this movie tells people to embrace the gender you really are. Let Amy be Amy, let Angela be Peter. Trans liberation now.
