I think one of the coolest things about this movie is that it doesn't need to suspend disbelief. A lot of the times people are like "why doesn't she just leave the house?" But the caller was never a threat until the babysitter realized he was inside the house. This is one of the best PG-13 remakes ever and it's misunderstood along with The Stepfather 2008 imo. Camilla Belle's performance as the babysitter was really good, she genuinely looked scared, her portrayal added so much authenticity to the film. What impressed me the most was the film's pacing. The suspense was masterfully crafted. The way the director handled the progression of events kept me on the edge of my seat and I feel like when your film has to be censored to pg-13 it adds a challenge to keep the film interesting, and often times it's rare to find a horror film that keeps you guessing and maintains the tension throughout. You can argue that this film is boring but if you really sit down and give it your attention 'When A Stranger Calls' can be immersive and unnerving with it's subtle cues and small details, it's not a film that bombards you with jump scares or overt violence. Instead, it carefully constructs an atmosphere of unease, relying on the viewer's imagination. I just wanted to defend this film because I remember finding it mediocre even as a kid when it came out, but revisiting it with the lights off and snuggled in my own home I found this super effective on rewatch, so now i champion it. If you enjoy slow burn horror films that focus on atmospheric tension and psychological dread, I recommend renting or buying 'When A Stranger Calls'. A lot of people want a reaction the original, but that film takes a detour like 25 minutes in and becomes a totally different film. This is the best version of the story, sorry!

AGREED!!!! One of my big problems with this remake (& maybe it's just me) was using Lance Henriksen for the caller's voice. It's too recognizable (to me anyway). Also, while the house was super-cool, being out in the middle of nowhere is already creepy enough. You would expect to be on edge & every little noise would be freaking me out. The set up in the original was much scarier, IMO, because it's so mundane. I also thought When A Stranger Calls Back was very creepy & fun & better than expected.

I ended up becoming a huge Sons of Anarchy fan and having basically forgotten all about this movie, so when I rewatched it & saw the killer was Chibs from SOA, I was gutted. 😂😂😂😂 Also, the inspiration for Ghostface or Scream is from when Kevin Williamson was house-sitting one night in the mid-’90s, he watched a television special about a Florida serial killer. It scared the hell out of him. He then noticed that a window was open. Except he hadn’t remembered opening it. He called a friend to help him not be so alone or scared, they ended talking about horror films and iconic slasher killers. Then he ended up writing the screenplay to Scream a bit later because of it. I do think this movie definitely has a hand in the inspiration, for sure! 😂

The original is undoubtedly one of the films that Scream MOST referenced. One error was Jill should have told the police that the stranger called from her friends phone. Tiffany wouldn't have been that far gone already from the house for it to be a prank. I would have killed the stranger as well without any shame. Especially since he murdered so many women and children. What reason would there be for him to be granted mercy. Also, the thought of him tearing the babysitter and children apart with his bare hands in the beginning is beyond horrifying. Those were 5 body bags for 4 people. I'm glad they didn't show the aftermath of what the detective was looking at.

27:36 I'm sorry. This just hits differently after the parody joke in Scary Movie. Girl: What do you want?! Killer: To see what your insides look like. Girl: ... Look on page 42. Killer: *Flipping through a tabloid-style magazine* ... Oh. Cool.

Your sarcasm & humor watching classic horror films are really the best Alanda 😭😭😭 no but seriously my first time watching this when I was young I was completely on edge from middle to end 😫 cause this can really happen in real life tbh. Movie overall is a true classic & thank you for giving us this reaction ❤️

Growing up I had seen the original getting parodied in things. the "the call is coming from inside the house" line is iconic and got referenced a fair bit. but i never known the name of, or seen, the original. So, when i watched this, I went in blind, so when that moment happened I lost it. then the shot of the guy in the ceiling. oh my god. Overall i really liked this film and thought they did a pretty good job with it.
@Knightcowboy89 Жыл бұрын
This remake gets alot of flack, but I honestly really enjoy it. It's a good suspense horror film to me. The original is good too, but I honestly prefer the remake. Now the 90s sequel to the original "When A Stranger Calls Back" is head and shoulders above BOTH original and remake! It's very good!
@moyarb Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've only seen the original and it looks like the remake just stretched out the original's first act, which is fine by me because the rest of the original is...not great.

For all its flaws there are some really great directorial choices that I (and my mom, surprisingly, because she hates horror) love in this movie, like I usually hate dark films but the use of it to highlight silhouettes here is so good, I love how they constantly make you feel like Jill is being watched, and as it turns out she actually is, and my favorite part is the choice of not showing certain things, like how they don't show the first victim and make you imagine what happened by the detective's reaction and all the body bags, same for when the friend bangs on the front door, it makes you wander if it's actually the friend who is soon snatched by the killer or the killer playing with Jill. Anyway! lol for some gay films that you might have not seen yet, I highly recommend The Way He Looks, a Brazilian film about a gay boy who falls for the new kid in class, and as a Brazilian I take huge pride in it so I must get others to watch lol, and The Handmaiden, a South Korean psychological lesbian thriller, that chances are you know about or have even seen it already given it's pretty well-known but I can't think of anything else right now lol.

what i love about this film is that the killer was literally a stranger. we know nothing about him or his motives. we only get a glimpse of his face as he’s driven away. makes him so much scarier.

Girl, suggestion is for you to do some creature feature films: Jaws, Piranha, Anaconda, Lake Placid, Python, Boa, Komodo, etc. I love killer animals and they just wind up being a good time. I would love your commentary on the ridiculousness on some of the films but at the same time your genuine reaction to decisions made.

1) I have this on DVD, so I must have watched it, but I don't remember any of it. 2) The movie (or at least the original) is based off an urban legend which this movie does hit many of the main beats of: babysitter goes to big isolated house; kids are already in bed, while parents are going out; person calls, although in the legend, they keep asking, "have you checked the children?"; babysitter calls police, who trace the call; "Get the children and get out. The call is coming from inside the house." Although, the original urban legend ends there.

the scariest thing about this movie for me was that he killed kids too. i was used to seeing movies with the “good endings,” so that along with “the call is coming from inside the house,” him ripping her wet hair out and that hospital scene, made this my favorite scary movie. 😭

I wonder if Jill from Scream 4 was named after the main character in this film (they both get a lock of hair torn out), since she really is the anti-Sidney. Pride Month suggestions: Hellbent (2004), Ginger Snaps (2000) and its sequels, Hellraiser (1987), May (2002), Jennifer's Body (2009). I'm sure you've seen Jennifer's Body, but I feel like that would be a fun one to watch together, and if you like it you'll probably like Ginger Snaps, they're pretty similar.
