This video covers the most common why most people want to open their own gym. In my opinion, it's also the WORST reason to open your own gym. If you are thinking about opening a gym you should watch this video first because it might save you a lot of money, time, and hardship.

I pay 80 dollars (YMCA) a month for my gym member ship. For a nice squat rack, plates, and bar it would be around 3,000. Those are going to last for years and years of not abused. So, 3 years of gym membership to pay off equipment. If you are going to open up a gym you are most likely paying a mortgage anyways. Unless you live at home still.

xNAJAFx no way man...my home gym has everything needed (barbell, dumbbells, pullup bar, dip parallels, rings, squat (and bench :D) rack etc...everything costs like year or two going to normal gym...and it has bunch of benefits (calm, friends,for free, lasts like forever...) + if needed, i should just sell it...home gym is way better and cheaper
@krakonoskraken8763
@krakonoskraken8763 7 жыл бұрын
xNAJAFx yeah, i live with parents...of course when someone is paying a rent and stuff, gym membership is better for him...but when you have good place, lets do your own! and i also like that strongman stuff because if you have some tire or log next to your house, you should workout outside and for free
@thechairman74
@thechairman74 7 жыл бұрын
You can shop around and get most of the basics for cheap. What gets expensive are the extras like dumbbells, and a lat pulldown. If you only make do with a barbell, rack, bench, plates and a pull up bar, you can do your entire workout that way. You can find plates for around $1/lb. If you can tolerate the loudness when you drop the bar because of the slack between the sleeve and hole, then you'll be fine.
@thechairman74
@thechairman74 7 жыл бұрын
actually you can go to Walmart.com, and get the cheap Golds Gym plates for well less than $1/lb. For dumbbells, get Olympic dumbbell handles and a bunch of 5's and 10's.

Yep. I'm in my 40s. I'm sucking up debt and time to be back in school for an occupational respec. I ran martial arts schools for a while when I was young. Helped a lot of people get fit and confident and mobile. Assisted in the the training of some people who were real fighters. Never made any money. I realized that what *I* wanted was a 9-5 that paid relatively well and that *really meant something to me.* The other 16 hours a day should be mine for training, for my family, and for my life. So I'm going to work in physical therapy. I found working with injured students the most rewarding. Now, I'll be getting people used to their new knees, getting people back to their training, or back to work. That means something.

This is so true. I work in the bagged salad industry and I have had multiple opportunities to go higher up in the ranks of management. Easier work, better money, but one big catch, my roster would change. I currently work a 4 day week, four 10+ hour days then 3 days off. Those 3 days off allow me to go hunting and camping, I get to fill my freezers with the ultimate free range protein, my true passion. I also have a passion for weight training, but because I spend my days off work in the bush, I just opt to weight train after work. This gives me the best of both worlds and although I have no passion at all for salad, I appreciate the role I'm in to allow me to pay my way while still being able to consistently hunt and train every single week 👌

Gym owner here, yes he is right. I've bought my gym place and it works fine but honestly nothing can prepare you for the amount of time you won't have for yourself and your loved ones. You will always need to put your gym first. The best thing I do is to get up in the 5 in the morning and do my workout. And after a long day of working with clients I do my run so I can clear the mind and organize myself for the next day. The thing is that I focus mostly on personal training and I have, thankfully I have great people who I train, but you need to be super organized if you want to succeed and have something of your personal life.

thats a pretty good rant Alan. I didn't open a gym because i like to lift, i just bought some weights and made a little basement gym in my parents' house so i wouldn't have to pay for a gym membership when i visit. I eventually wanna move back to my home town and open a gym but for different reasons than "i like lifting," and thus i was relieved my reasons weren't mentioned in this lol

What is your reason? My fantasy is that I would find the cheapest locale I can find, make it hardcore and a cool atmosphere and then just hope people show up from rumors and maybe some facebook advertisements :'DD Because honestly all gyms are lame fitness clubs nowadays. It would be fun to show people that gyms are workshops, not playgrounds.

Where were you three years ago? I had my own gym, and everything you said is true. Always stressing about money, 80 hour weeks, no time to train, hardly saw my kids, members wanting this and that. I was in the Army for 14 years so I can understand your motivation all too well. I sold the gym at a loss because I hated the stress and not having any time for my family. I'm glad I did, but I'm grateful for the lessons I learned. I'm much happier now in my ordinary job, with an ordinary salary, but extraordinary training.

As a business owner of many years, this is the absolute and complete truth. I'm in a position where I meet individuals with new business or are considering business startup. Your counsel is truly excellent. Individuals seldom count the cost of running their own business. The rewards can be great but the cost is almost certain. You have many excellent videos but this one ranks up there with the best. Thanks so much for the counsel.

So many people out there are just delusional and see guys like you with successful channels on KZbin and think it's just a matter of uploading videos. They have no concept of work ethic or what it takes to be successful at anything. Everyone just has these pipe dreams of some fantasy life, job, and income, but have put in no thought on how to get there. Thank you for tactfully and respectfully saving these people from misery!

I want to open my own gym because I want as many people as possible to experience the positive impact that lifting has had on me. It empowered every other thing in my life, yet so many people either don't feel like they can go to a lot of gyms or can't stay interested. A new gym and one that isn't a corporate globo would really benefit my community.

Terrific advice. Especially the part about making your passion your full time job. Take note younger viewers who maybe haven't started college or picked a path yet - making your passion into your career will kill your passion. Even if it doesn't feel like it yet. Find something you don't mind doing and do that thing, to make money, to be able to keep doing your passion for fun.

Thanks @AlanThrall this video really resonated with me, as I'm one of "those guys" imminently thinking about going for the plunge of opening a gym, more importantly a strongman gym! my problem is the concern of financial security. I want to open the gym for the right reasons, I love helping people train properly and I want to provide a decent fun gym for weight lifting and strongman as there isn't one here, however I already have a successful business and have been lucky to get here. so I'm weighing up the gamble of selling my business to "attempt" creating a successful gym business.

Love this video! I currently run a business and too many times people asume I just have a 9-5 office job. I have to be at work at 530 am and do not finish till 4pm most days. On lunch I'm usually on calls or setting up interviews. I take calls till 9pm and on several occasions had to get up in the middle of the night to handle issues. I've had to climb under trash compactors and come home with my slacks and polos so sweaty and covered in crud I've just had to toss them. I usually have to be at the gym by 330am to squeeze in a workout. I'd love to branch out and open my own business. I love the freedom I currently have in making decisions and running with it. I just want something of my own that I created. I thought about a gym or something fitness related but you definitely brought up some good points. The gym is my escape I don't want it to become something I hate.

I've been following Elliott Hulse for a long time and now and i really admire him , and i just started doing something with my life just now the last 2 months. And randomly i saw one of your videos talking about squats, i thought i'd subscribe to you. Then i watched some other of your videos and when you said you've been watching Elliott Hulse too i'd more than happy to subscribe to you. I've watched some other of your vids too and you have quality and original content. You really are an inspiration to a lot of us who want to get out of our comfort zones but get stuck in the doubt disease. I'll watch your vids everyday from now on. You just been added to the people that inspire me and i admire. I hope that one day i might be able to inspire others to grow strong like you and Elliot. Keep growing stronger brother. Thank you, not only for your videos but for becoming the strongest version of yourself cause you give us hope and "permission" to do the same.

I definitely agree with the being told what to do, when and where and being judged based on your rank. I served 3.5 years in the Army and yes just like you guys in the Marines, we are micromanaged as well.

Great video Alan! I love training and love the idea, however what you have stated is totally the case, I love training and not necessarily training others, etc. Keep up the videos. Thanks

I remember a year or so ago when I got into a training program being asked somewhat the same question by one of the coaches, I said I wanted to get into strongman, powerlifting and eventually open my own gym, he turned to me and asked "Why open a gym? Why not just work for someone else?" And I replied without missing a beat. "I want to help people and I don't think when you work for someone else that you can do that properly, I've seen great trainers working under a barely competent owner and the spark disappears, I want to be the guy who gives that spark and pushes people to be their best, whatever it costs me I wanna make people better, I love helping them and I know I'll never be a world champion but maybe I can help someone else be one some day." I didn't think about this ever before I was asked, I was put on the spot on my first day of training and just answered from the heart.

Also man I think you opened the type of gym that's hard to recruit for. There are these stupid things called orange fitness popping up all over Canada but they're PAACKED because they cater to a larger demographic than untamed strength.

Emyth is a great book. Definitely a good read. There are many people who enter the entrepreneurial space on the base of the dream and not the practical element. I full agree with your perspective and well put. Self employment is not a vacation. It is a harder hill to climb with tons of risk. However, if success is found through your hardwork, the payout can be better.

i dont know if you were told that, but when i was in the army and talked about how much i wanted to get out already people told me "well in civic life youre also going to have a boss" i really resonate with the part where you had to take orders from people you had 0 respect for

When I was in college and figuring out what I wanted to do, I thought about studying exercise science multiple times, but I always asked myself the question, "Would I want to train other people?" The answer for me was always a resounding "No". It's hard enough to motivate yourself sometimes. I would not have patience for others, that wouldn't want to work hard, etc. I do love lifting and plan to do it as long as possible and this January just purchased equipment to start my home gym (Titan T3 Rack, Ohio Power Bar, bunch of used weights off craigslist, 3 4x6' horse stall mats, olympic dumbbell handles, Rogue utility bench, and bunch of bands). I love it. Super convenient when I pressed for time between work and school. I love the gym I'm a member of too (privately owned), but I can only make there once or twice a week now, so I can still get 3-4 workouts in a week with my garage gym.

Great video, 3years into opening and running my own gym and completely agree with every point you made here! This video is valuable to any open out there contemplating doing it. I read E-Myth a couple years late but enjoyed the read non to less to understand more how I was feeling and where I was struggling running the gym! Thanks again Alan!

Agree 100% on having to show respect to some (not squared away) people in the Marine Corps because of rank/time in service. I had a similar distaste for authority constantly being lorded over me, and hurry up and wait is no fun either. Lol. Semper Fi Brother!

Fellow small gym owner... so much truth. Lost all my money, hit a house foreclosure, then the big D. Dealt with defectors, theft, eating Ramen and more. But the whole time I felt like Rocky going through the shit and grinning the whole time because I knew that once I pushed through, once I cracked the code, I would have learned hella leassons and became my own man. Lo and behold here I am. The gym is cracking now, producing champions in martial arts, track and field (high school) and my first pro card bodybuilder (whats up Karen!) and I have the respect of the community, my family, my ex and most importantly, myself. Glad you made it too brother, great video. Lifeforce Fitness LLC in Jefferson WI on FB.

Have you read the book "Hero with 1000 faces" or "Iron John"? Sounds like you pull some thoughts from it, but its also inherent in every man. The thought of embarking on a "Journey" is innate in all men throughout time and only some actually choose to accept said "call" to adventure. Alan I can see your personality and know you have great character from the trials you have faced and conquered. Video made me tear up a bit because I feel like I'm at the same place you were when you left the marines. I am leaving my hometown January to start my own "Hero's Journey" and have the same tenacity and fire in my stomach to succeed in what I want to do. I'm glad to see you are successfully doing yours. Love these videos, God bless.
