A Cold War-era relic was responsible for that loud siren blaring across several Sacramento neighborhoods for more than a half-hour Monday night.

The Air Raid sirens used to go off monthly to for testing, I clearly remember my grandma explaining what the sound was and why, it was I think the last Friday of the month around 11am, I could swear the 4th Ave railroad crossing still does, maybe not monthly anymore but I know I've heard it at least 2 in the last 7 months because the first time I had been gone for 6 months so it was nostalgic and comforting on a level, the second time it surprised me how quickly the month had passed. I'm shocked long time residents who are obviously old enough to remember these sirens don't. Especially since I had always been under the impression that each siren still was regularly tested and maintained to some degree. Now I'm wondering if "My" siren has just been testing itself for 40+ years and no one notices because of the time of day. Or, this is a Mandela effect thing and explains some other inconsistencies as well 😂

I meeeaaaaan siren tests aren’t uncommon if your local emergency operations has everything together. They aren’t supposed to just sit there for months and gather dust until they’re actually needed, are they? That’s a recipe for a disaster without a working early warning system. They’re tested on a regular basis to make sure everything works and doesn’t need maintenance. It’s basic preparation that can and does save countless lives during an emergency.

I'm in south Sacramento, and after moving here in 1997, for several years an incredibly annoying loud whine would start up in the mid morning and go on for a few minutes once a month, which was once a month too often! Finally, after making a few phone calls to the city and county, i found someone who was able to identify it as an old air raid siren, apparently with an automatic self-testing mechanism. Since it was not necessary anymore (if it ever was), he said he'd have it turned off and did. What a relief!

Two potential ways this could have been set off…. 1. This siren was not properly disconnected during decommissioning and still had power and a potential activation mechanism such a dialler that was still hooked into the phone lines that was triggered by some sort of power malfunction. Which is highly unlikely as most sirens have their diallers or pagers cut before being disconnected from the power grid. 2. The siren still had the electrical disconnect switch, relay (electrical motor starter), and manual test switch still in place even though the activation mechanism had been cut and was manually activated by someone.

We were close to the narthex and wanted to avoid walking along the spine of the vaulted nave ceiling in the dark. We found a door and a rope hanging from a disused belfry. We rang the s__t out of those bells and then sprinted down to the truck where our boss was waiting with engine running. The Mayberry PD was right across the street so we skedaddled.

As soon as I heard the siren I instantly knew what it was. These were heard through much of my childhood. In the form of monthly tests of the siren system.

They used to have them in San Lorenzo. Of course they took them out. They used to go on at noon time when I was a kid. The good old days.
