My husband was adopted at one day old, father Tlingit, mom was 15, white. That’s all he knows, he is a very tall large man, definitely can see the native Alaskan in him ❤

My grandma didn't teach my mom or any of her siblings the Tlingit language and I'm a bit sad i have to learn it on my own. I have a pale complexion and i don't look Native American despite it being most of my heritage and i sometimes feel like I'm not native american and I'm not of where my family comes from and I'm a bit sad about that. My mother has told me some stories and told me what family and clan i belong to but.. I feel fake.

You are not alone. Many elders were sent to “boarding schools “ get the native beat out of them. So they didn’t pass it on to the next generation out of fear and brainwashing. I’ve lived in Southeast Alaska since 75 and have seen this in many families, it’s very sad and tragic 😢

Exact same here. I'm native from the Tlingit tribe as well, on my father's side. My dad looks the part, I don't. I'm half German as well (mother, and took the pale complexion from her. My dads' dad was a true native and I wish so badly I got to meet him. He lived in Alaska, my father left his family and came to Idaho for my mother. I met a gut who was a native and when i said I was too, he gave me such a look...😭

Even people of European descent don't know their own cultures lol. Ask the typical white guy who's a devout Baptist, Methodist, etc. Christian about what his ancestors did and what they believed in and they won't have a clue. All our histories have been systematically destroyed
