Alaska Spring Brown Bear

This year I decided to stick closer to Anchorage since the airstrip had so much snow so late in to the year! With bluebird days in April I began flying and looking for dens in new areas. It didn’t take long for me to find a few dens and I even found a bear that had killed a moose!

Anyone who thinks you didn’t hunt fair chase is delusional. They have no concept about how difficult how much skill, learning, and physicality went into that hunt. As a pilot I totally get it. No easy thing to find a bear and then find a safe landing spot that you can make a stalk from. Plus, the mama moose for the 10 moose calves you just saved are thanking you as well for your service.

Having a plane adds a whole new dimension to hunting in Alaska. You have so many more options to get you away from the crowds. I have a couple of friends that are pilots, one owns a Mooney, and the other flies for First Air out of Ottawa, and they have both said that if you can fly a Piper aircraft, you can fly anything. I don't know if they were referring to a specific model, or not, but the Cubs and Super Cubs are amazing craft.

Awesome video. If you tie a couple spruce bows to the rear of the sled. Kinda just draggin behind then when you want to take a break just let the sled slide back a foot and it will slide up on the branches.

I do not understand where there is any skill or point in shooting a sleeping bear! I am not against hunting I just don’t think I would be bragging about this hunt at all. I really would like to know where the skill is. At 63 I could see a bear on a kill then wait out my flight time knowing it’s going to be in a food coma and then go shoot it. Very disappointed!

I think for a lot of animals it doesn’t make sense due to their vitals being blocked. However, in this case I had a very clear shot to the boiler maker and felt confident in it. On a side note, pulling the trigger on an animal is generally a very small part of the actual hunt. The skill comes in accessing an area, finding an animal, getting in range, and then having an opportunity to pull the trigger.

338 win mag. The bears that feed on salmon are generally the worst tasting in my experience. If you get a bear that feeds on grass or berries it’s much better.
