I love this home. It has all the necessities for comfortable living. I am encouraged by the fact a home in Northern Michigan gets enough sun to power the solar panels. My favorite part though, is the couple. They are not polished or rehearsed. They seem to be authentically off-grid people who want to share their knowledge.

I live off grid in Upstate NY, where the sun doesn’t shine much in winter. My Tiny house is under 600 sq. ft. With 1600 watts of solar, two 420, 6 volt Crown batteries and a 300 watt inverter. My fridge, freezer, water pump are all 12 volt. I heat the house with a wood cook stove and heat water with a thermosiphoning system off that stove. I also have an off grid, propane stove and oven and sawdust toilets. Two large dogs, two cats, and chickens. I’m never bored. I’m always coming up with another idea to try. I’ve been doing this close to 10 years. It’s a process and I love learning and experimenting. It’s so good to see others doing the same. Put a few off-grid folks in a room and they’ll be bouncing ideas around the room. In my opinion, everyone should try this lifestyle for a year. You learn to conserve and think about what you’re using. Thanks for the video. Off-gridders are not crazy after all!

I live off grid with 4 Victron inverters, 12 Battle Born batteries and 3840 watts of solar panels. The 3000va inverters gives me plenty of 240V power to run anything I want including a welder. My solar panels are mounted on three 8 foot high 6" pipes set in concrete. On a normal day the batteries are fully charged before noon. I have propane heat and a propane tank-less water heater. Everything else is electric. I don't have a wood stove/fireplace (been there done that) and therefore I don't have to deal with gathering wood, splitting, drying etc. I've been living off grid since 2019, first in a motor home and for the last four years in my 360 sq ft cabin in the Colorado Rockies. I live off my soc sec and a very small pension, but have more money than I ever had in my life! It's so nice to see other folks enjoying life with all the comforts a home can give and not be burdened with debt. Well done and thank you for sharing your story with the rest of us.

Great Idea Brooke. By showing various homes off grid and semi off grid, it may help people on the brink of deciding a lifestyle change to investigate the many varieties possible. I think a lot of people fear making foundational missteps. For some there's no money to scrap a project and start over. Every step of the way will have to be functional and livable. But that's how the country was started, actually that's how every country/nation/civilization starts. The priorities are a strong shelter, food, storage, safety, medicals, etc. Improvement and additions came later. By that time you'll have a better understanding of exactly what you need to do to improve your home. Until then basic livable is enough. There are many with no shelter at all, no certainty of eating , no clean water available,in unsavory areas and often so trapped in circumstances they didn't create by bad behavior ,there's no way to change their living conditions.

Thank you so much Barb and Dan for sharing your beautiful cozy warm home with us. I live just outside Lansing and my daughter went to Michigan Tech. I just fell in love with the UP of Michigan especially the Keweenaw peninsula. I grew up in Southern California and moved to Michigan in 1995 when I retired from the military. I’ve been looking for several years now for some property up north but haven’t found the right piece. I’m almost 67 and all by myself now so for a single old gal haha I would love to be off the beaten path but still need to be realistic etc. there’s a lot to be said to living with minimal stuff. We think we need a huge home stuffed to the ceiling with stuff. However, I lived in Kodiak, Alaska for 6 years and I think those were the happiest 6 years of my entire life. Fishing, crabbing, hunting, clean air, water and the northern lights what more could a person wish for in life. Best of luck to you both as you enjoy your little nest of heaven you’ve built for yourselves.

Wow, Brooke, so cool to see Barb and Dan again, I just loooove their homestead! They're great people, I really enjoyed our time with them. I could easily live with this much luxury! They have more than all you need. Love it! I have lived with MUCH less in smaller digs. One thing I would say to Barb is to check into a foot powered teeny load washing machine, uses one gallon of water. Can't do sheets or large garments, so you still have to go to laundromat, but for a pair of jeans and a few t-shirts, underwear, socks, etc. It beats hand washing. They're very small and efficient. I used to send these to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan to use in the desert. I'm sure they got pretty sweaty and uncomfortable spending weeks in the same uniform. Anyway, it saves on having to own a lot of clothes, I'd rather just own 2 or 3 pair of sheets and go to laundromat once a month. Just wash the clothing essentials you need by foot in between and get some mean gams at the same time! Barb already has some great hiking muscles. 🥰 Thanks for posting this, I'm happy you guys are keeping in touch! Say hello from boring Florida for me and that im so impressed with their home and way of life. Cheryl

Reminds me of the cabin in-laws had. It started with two rooms and a loft and ended with another equal size open room with added bath house. We heated water either with large coffee makers or sun bag to hang in shower surround. Lol, yes, the deer are plentiful and can’t plant anything without barriers. One thing I would prefer is a soapstone stove. Tend not to scream out heat and retains it longer with small burns.

Hi Barb and Dan, I loved your video. You were saying you wished you could do laundry at your cabin. Why not try and find a wringer washer my mom used one of those while i was growing up. My husband’s mother always has had a wringer washing machine & loved it. They had 7 kids so there was always laundry to do. She always said the wringer washer got the clothes cleaner. In later years, they bought a traditionally washing machine machine, but always had the wringer washer.

We heated with wood when we we lived out in the country in Colorado and I loved it. We did have electricity if we had to use it but never did. So many things you have implemented remind me of my in-laws farm when we married more than 50 years ago. They had a big garden and canned enough for winter and stored in the cellar. They butchered their own meat. They had a hand pump for water and this was when they were raising four kids. The house is still in the family and has gradually been modernized but for just two people it is a great life.

Fabulous! Love, love, love! 💜 Barb and Dan, you've done an amazing job! I love so many of your organizational ideas, solar, decor, etc. We have an off-grid home in the woods (Two 1950's A-frames: a little main cabin, and an even smaller guest cabin), and a little vacation cottage in Key West. All are "tiny homes," and as self-sufficient as possible. We only recently got solar at the cabin, and that allowed some nice living upgrades--like a inside bathroom! Lol.... Overall, we also feel good about the sacrifices we have made to "live beneath your means," and do your best to not be in debt. I feel living mindfully, attributes to this. Not everyone can live off-grid, and thats ok; it's not for everyone. Yet, I feel one can still make it a habit and priority to live mindfully. That includes living on a budget, and always being aware of your savings and expenses (and not judging ourselves or others if an illness/emergency/things beyond control affects things for awhile)...and be mindful of what things you bring in-and-out of your home and life, and who you prioritize to be in your life. Think about what it takes to maintain a healthy lifestyle (physically, emotionally, mentally). That should be part of mindfulness too, because if your environment isn't healthy, that can affect a whole heck of a lot in life, eh? 😊...Looking forward to implementing some of your ideas, as we continue renovating. Thank you SO much for sharing your home! Bless you. 🏡

This is a very nice and well planned set-up! I have been adding solar panels and two 3000 watts in series inverters on my home place. I like back-ups to back-ups also! I also added 20 40 amp hour batteries for power storage. Another addition was a wood burning heater as well. Last year I added a wall mounted propane heater! I have a dual feed propane and or gas 15,000 watt generator with a 50 amp plug in! I am living in a mobile home, but I have more than doubled its size with add on additions! Another perk is I have 9 acres of land with this! It was a lot of work, but I taken my time with it all and paid cash as I did this. I watch a lot of KZbin and gotten a lot of my ideas from other people! Will Rouse is very informative with setting up a great solar system. There’s a few others as well!
