Winter Hits the Cabin. Brutal Cold

Jay I'm a single dad of a Downs boy. He'll sit and watch YT videos with me sometimes. Back twenty years ago a friend of mine had a old church concrete block building on some property he bought. We used to go spend the weekends there helping him clear the over grown vines and scrub oaks back to the old growth portion of the property. He absolutely loved "going camping". When he saw you fixing up the sausage and Bush's baked beans take a guess what we're having for supper tonight. Thank for another great video!

Hey buddy I took my older brother to my off grid cabin for a week we just got back yesterday his wife of 44 years passed two weeks ago he is lost and had to get away and we had such a great time ate like kings and drank some too lol it was so cold but we stayed warm and happy the fire place kept us so cozy I could see him happier too !

@@CDNR711 I believe this 100%. My close friends have a mountain cottage in central WA outside of any cities and we spend several weekends there each year. We all feel like a million bucks after even just a few days at a time. We eat hearty, drink, and spend time in front of either a fire pit or the inside fireplace. I'm a veteran with a bad sleep disorder and I never have trouble falling or staying asleep at their property.

Jay, I have the same generator. It's normal in the cold. Full choke, let it run for 60 seconds, half choke 60 seconds, slowly push the choke off.

I have two of them just a quick thought tilt the inverter to the left on its side and then to the right to its side then pull start it! You review this video you had leaned it over and then pulled started and it ran!😊

Also if you bring it inside make sure you’re fuel tank is full it stops condensation from getting in your fuel line !

Wow, that’s some real cold! We had a cabin for years in Ontario, and my dad was adamant that we clean and fill the wood stove before leaving deer camp. That first winter trip he wanted to walk in and be able to strike a match. He used to say if you need 30 minutes of prep to get warm, it might be fine… and it might not. Excited for your early start this year, have a safe and fun winter!

Hi Jay, glad you’re able to get back to the cabin, great video! One tip for starting small engines like your generator (lawnmower, pressure washer, etc). Pull the cord out slowly until you feel resistance. This is the engine on the compression stroke. Once you feel resistance, let the starter cord back into the machine. Once it’s all the way back in then reef on it with a good full pull. Having the engine on the compression stroke when you do this helps it start up way faster. Works for most small engines, even two strokes like chain saws. Take care old son!

Jay, can I make a suggestion? Load the wood stove when you leave the cabin, then on arrival light the stove put the generator indoors and carry out your normal arrival stuff. Warming cabin and genny ready to go 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I don’t think Jay would want to stick around waiting for the woodstove fire to go out completely and metal to cool down etc just to place wood inside for lighting the next time. I wouldn’t. Wood/kindling next to the stove ready to go in is just as efficient. Plus you don’t have to wait around as the temperature drops to do what you suggested.

No comparison to pristine air, free glacial water, free fuel and building materials everywhere, clean deepwater salmon, pure moosemeat, no gangs, no streetcrime and no traffic. If you cannot get proper tires and learn how to drive 55mph on snowstreets like the rest of us, your problem

Up here in northern Sweden some of us usually bring a hand-winch (if there isnt one mounted on the snowmobile already). If you get stuck and there is a tree or something, you can use that to pull the snowmobile up from either being stuck or too step uphill. Always nice to see you fix about the cabin. Have a good one

@@Lazarus-aap I hope you have a pleasant time "up here". Depends on what you are doing. If you are gonna go with snowmobiles, I would recommend staying on the snowmobile lanes as a default. Bring spare clothes, firewood, starter, lighter, and something to grill (swedish Falukorv and/or 'pinnbröd'). If you just mean what to avoid to do in general during winter, I would say go out in the woods alone during heavy snowfall/really cold nights are to be avoided. Make sure people know where you are, as cellphone reception can be spotty. If you prepare for the worst, you can survive a long time even during the dark winter months out in the woods. :)

I see you using the little firestarter pucks...if you want a homemade solution, take cardboard egg cartons, fill each egg spot with wood chips (buy a bag of hamster cage bedding, it's cheap) then melt down cheap candles and dump the wax into each of the wood chip pockets. You can just tear them off as needed, they burn hot and for quite awhile to get the fire going.

Me and my kids just made 4 flats of those fire starters. We save the sentsy wax through out the year. I use chainsaw sawdust and add some hardwood pellets, with a small pouch of lint from the dryer on the bottom. Amazing fire starters.

Good that the cabin survived unscathed. When the boggan got stuck, unhitch and get snowmobile to an area of traction then run a length if rope back to boggan and pull it up rather than hauling all of the heavy gear by hand. Stay warm!

Build a small, very well insulated "cabinet" with an insulated duct from the cabin for the generator. When needed in freezing conditions, open a small hatch to duct work ,& place a small battery-operated fan to push warm air from cabin to generator. 30 minutes to an hour later, close hatch and go easily start the generator. Generators cost big $$$$. Freezing cold starts cause extraordinary fast wear & tear. A warmed generator will last years longer, and the much quieter operation of generator ain't a bad thing!

Just curious, so your friend would sit and wait the fire out? Wait until all the wood was completely burnt out with no hot ambers left so as to fill the stove with wood for the next trip without it catching fire again.

If not a pre-laid fire in the stove, at least 24 hrs worth of dry wood and a full kindling / splits bucket ready and stored indoors. It always amazes me how little firewood you have on hand. Most folks I know, try to get at least 6 to 12 months ahead of the game.

That Same ready-wood/kindling can be placed next to the stove to place inside on the next visit without hanging out in a cabin or tent as the temperature drops just to do as you explained. If you go back and watch Jay’s “Your questions answered” video from about a week ago, he explains why he doesn’t do this. Why none of us do this.

Yeah, I'd say these types of videos are fantastic! They remind me of when I lived in Canada. The Forests, and lakes, Spring time camping, hunting, fishing and at times, worrying about the predatory animals... always good to be prepared! My brother and I are totally into it, and After my divorce, I quickly stepped out of a depression (thank God) and started thinking 🤔 nature, nature is what I need! And roughing it a little. I so enjoyed preparing my backpack, and things (a ritual) when I left for a few days... Another thing I've taken up lately but basically have done all my life is riding motorcycles, enjoying the beautiful scenery on long trips in summer and fall... I also love a good meal, so the food when going Forest camping , or when out on a bike trip is a big part of it all! Thx for sharing your adventures with us!!

Great video we have a cabin close to Edmonton it is always colder in there then it is outside And I always have my fire wood ready in the cabin. So when I bring one inside I I light the fire so it can start to warm up inside while bring the rest in. Have a great week

Funny how you young fellas have no idea how to operate a manual choke on a carburetor😉. No experience like us old guys. That cold always requires a deft hand with the choke. Also get a nice snowmobile helmet with a heated shield. You will thank me later. Great video as always.

Good job and lots of effort! Some tips from the arm chair frontiersman..; 1) always clean the ash from the stove at the end of a visit and pre build the fire. You can keep the first evening worth of wood inside. Light the stove before you do anything else. 2) never burn plywood ends. It’s full of glues and chemicals which are harmful. 3) what’s wrong with just using a cooler in winter? Plenty cold out to keep perishables fresh and you can save on gas.. 4) one can of gas for the whole trip? For generator and snowmobile? Looks cozy and really fun. The challenges are worth it

Jay, just came across your vlog. Noticed the hard starting of your Honda gen or inverter. If that veg oil is solid then the motor oil in gen is thicker as well. Warm by stove longer, avoid some thermal shock to aluminum and steel motor components. Let carb warm up so fuel will atomize. Remove spark plug and pull rope to distribute oil somewhat then reinstall plugs. One tip on initial start is pull cap off spark plug and just loosely set plug cap back on the plug. This will create a gap between cap and plug which greatly increases elec resistance thus a bigger&hotter spark. Should help on cold/flooded motor. Let motor warm up before hittin revs and load.

17:00 A trick to start the Honda Gens when it's cold is to take the side cover off and take the screw off that holds the air filter in place. Use a can of starting fluid and put the nozzle just in the intake behind where the air filter goes, and pull start the generator. Usually starts up in one or two pulls. If you're like me, I run my Honda with the fuel switch off to run all of the gas out of the carburetor when I'm done using it. They usually dont want to start right up next time you use them till the gas fills up the carburetor. I dont wait, works every time. Great video, Thumbs up !
