I think it’s more that Alastor is not a trusting person by nature, and sleep is when you’re most vulnerable, so for him to fall asleep in the middle of them shows he either trusts them, or (at least with the exception of Charlie) he is so unafraid of them, that he allows himself to slip into that most vulnerable of states. But when he wakes up, he realises what just happened and panics a little, because of that distrustful nature, he’s simply not used to sleeping so comfortably around others.
