yeah this reminds me of OG Everquest, was revolutionary at the time. Having to consider the enemy strength to make sure you can handle it then dying and losing exp and your body with your loot. That got old after a while, often needing to enlist a strong player to drag your body back to you and paying them a tip for service. etc. Also, kudos on maintaining the healthy living outside of gaming.

I have over 40 hours in the game so far, and loving it overall. This is giving me the feels of wonder i had when i first played EQ back in 2000. Great welcoming community, and overall the game play I expected. Its combat is better than old EQ, but I find it satisfying enough on my Enchanter. The fact you need the support and crowd control classes make this feel like those old skool mmos where you really had to work for levels. Maybe because I played the old EQ, the xp loss + corpse run doesnt bother me as much, and at least you keep your gear, and it is not a naked corpse run of shame.

AKA it's my high school days all over again when I was playing EQ and WoW instead of doing homework 😂. Although this is only the next stage of Pantheon's development (that they're calling "Early Access"), I'm excited for the future considering how much flipping fun I'm having. The world feels alive and the community is super helpful. I think even new comers that don't come with a preconceived expectation would have a blast, regardless of their MMO background. One thing to note is this is an MMORPG and not your traditional MMO... there's a difference when you add the RPG element back in.

@DraekosTV
@DraekosTV 20 күн бұрын
@@David-x7g5v so fun fact about me, I solo a lot because I'm usually watching a podcast or doing something else while at work or something. So I've soloed from level 1 to 8 and my first group was last night. Any mob that has a "Chevron" 🔰 symbol is basically a group mob while everything else is soloable ASSUMING it's within a reasonal con range (e.g. whites, blues, etc should be no problem while yellows are rough, orange is brutal, and red is a death sentence. I kinda create my own game loop so for example I was farming a blue mob for a few hours because I was collecting pelts for crafting and reselling and I "accidentally" leveled up twice. Also, keep in mind some classes are better at soloing than others. I was playing a summoner so I had a pet as my Tank and I would just nuke the mobs for DPS.

That's the way it was back in the old-school days of EQ (1999). People worked together as inter-dependency was a YUGE factor. I can also recall the people from Halas, the starting city for Barbarians, they'd come ALL the way over to my continent to play, then die, and they'd have a 45 minute travel time because they didn't bind in our city. Binding was another thing that you'd have to get from another player (if you could find a caster high enough to bind or willing to do so). Back in the day there was a lot of risk/reward and the risk could be painful.

As someone who grew up playing EQ 1, this was a big throwback. The extremely dark darkness, the brutal recovery time between fights, and the lack of obvious quests and things to do. You really have to get out, explore things, and depend on the good folks like Voltar that came before you to survive. It looks like it could be fun for a bit for a bit of that nostalgia. I'm digging the obvious upgrades over EQ1 too.

This game is basically a modern take on EverQuest 1. For me its pretty nostalgic because EQ1 was my first MMO, but as you can see from the dying mechanic I would not want to repeat it again. I was spoiled by WoW. Players cannot loot your body until you give them permission. Corpse runs were fairly big deals in EQ. You had to gather a party and clear out the area to drag the body to an area where you could safely loot. There were PvP servers like Tallon Zek and Vallon Zek if I can remember properly (spelling is probably off) and you could loot one piece of armor and take their money but you didnt lose your bags or what were in them. So people loved to gank you and steal your chest armor. There was a time I had a friend fall into the pit trap at Blackburrow Den (after I told him to stay AWAY from the tree with the pit trap) and I had to rescue him. There were groups of people farming various levels of the dungeon so it was clear enough to make my way to his body. So I grabbed all his stuff and got aggroed at the last second. Ran all the way through the dungeon trying to find my way out, Indiana Jones style. One day I went back with a high level character to see just what happened and I had managed to pull the entire zone. I had made all the wrong choices on how to get out and I even pulled the main boss. It was the biggest train to zone ever and everyone in the zone died. I had to log off for the day because the hate messages wouldn't stop lol. BUT... I had successful rescued my friend who I gave a quick scolding to. These games had a unique charm to them though. I liked the lighting system, requiring a light source. It was cool to play like an assassin and see people running through the woods at night and try to sneak up on them and gank them hehe. The game also had a language system and you could learn various languages on your character. For instance I made a troll shadowknight (my favorite) and my friend made a human mage. While it took FOREVER to learn human common because of my characters low intelligence, my friends mage learned trollispeak in like 10 minutes because of his characters high intelligence. You just spammed messages in a tell to each other and as your skill leveled up more and more characters would be translated to english. One day my friend was playing without me and came across a group of trolls playing together. They started talking inn troll speak about how they were going to eat his character. He then started up a spell so his hands glowed and said in trollspeak I don't think you are going to be eating me today. They loved it so much they let him join the party. You get so many cool moments like that in these types of games but oh my lord they can get tedious and one mistake can cause a mass corpse run that takes the rest of the day. It is something to experience at least once but I prefer my retail WoW. I guess i'm old like that. I like my conveniences. I proved my uber pve and pvp skills a long time ago and would rather just enjoy pretty graphics and animations with a story tied to it than anything else these days.

He literally uninstalled immediately and went out to a bar to drink, and never played another game again, like ever, even tabletop D&D. The only thing he played after that was texas hold em poker. I never had time to sink into EQ, which is what these games require. This is why I like games like Warhammer Online and retail WoW. I can play them, mess around, pug an LFR and log off. I can complete a few things, get a mount or some gear and feel accomplished. I just can't commit to long raid schedules and farming everything required. EverQuest took it to an extreme.

22:40 when you flee from a mob, sprint to create some distance but NEVER let the stamina bar hit complete 0. If you do youll get an "exhausted" debuff which is why they kept catching you. Sprint until stamina is low, stop sprinting to allow the bar to refill, and sprint and repeat. The mob will eventually leash and you will escape most low level mobs unless you get rooted or nuked by a caster. PS regarding death: when you get your corpse, target your body and type /corpse so you can drag your corpse out of harms way. As long as you get your corpse, none of your loot will ever disappear.

I’m an old-school gamer who started playing the original EverQuest in 1999 and kept at it for years (until I eventually left for Dark Age of Camelot). When I saw this new game was in Early Access, I got a bit nostalgic. Watching your video, I tried talking myself into playing-though I definitely don’t have the same stamina or free time I did back in 1999-2005. But then, when you hit level 5 and discovered you'd lose experience and drop items, I realized I just had to give it a shot. It reminds me of one particular EverQuest memory: I’d been drinking heavily one night while playing and ended up passing out on my keyboard. Sadly, for my character, I fell asleep on the arrow key, so my character spent the next eight hours running aimlessly through the zone, getting killed by every random mob that crossed my path. I lost about three levels’ worth of progress-which took me weeks to earn-and all of my items. The next morning, I was scouring a thousand empty corpses trying to find the one that still had my gear… no luck. Ah, those were the good old days!

1. there are bind locations so you don't have to run the distances to an area you want to hunt in. Ask people about where they are located and bind there. 2. You were attacking "group" mobs .. on the mob card there is a white chevron in the left hand corner signifying it is for a group. 3. You went into a predominately group oriented game and played solo. You can solo but the game mechanics are designed for social interaction and grouping. Overall the game is in a bare bones state as everyone has mentioned but it really is a gem in the rough that with a lot of polish will end up being a great EQ alternative.

Regarding combat, if you only did low level, solo combats, you might have been missing on one key system : states. You can apply a state that can be triggered by other players to put debuffs on your target. Example : I, a monk, put off balance on a monster. Then, a warrior use a skill that makes the monster fall because it is off balance (would do nothing on its own) and while it's on the ground, it takes more damage or something. It is key to combat to use states and it literally changes the game.

Old School RPG for the Gen X crowd like me. Running back to the corpse is a big part of the appeal to me. It really adds an element of excitement when fighting. You can lose your gear, XP and Levels. It's super challenging which is what made the OG games levels more difficult but rewarding. This game definitely will not be for everyone I suspect the 40-55+ gamers will really like it the most.

"Pantheon is trying to be a unique MMO" by trying to be as much like Everquest as possible, the selling point of the game. As someone who played EQ from Kunark to PoP, but not since...it looks a lot like everquest from corpse runs to trains to zone(it wasnt clear if there was a zone line to run to, which could cause problems)...i dunno, it looks like it is delivering what it set out to...i dont know that i have the time or patience for it 25 years later.

linked the video to a friend and he immediately bought the game for us both as a little christmas gift - one thing i have to add to your review here after a few hours in is that if you plan to play alone, picking something more solo-oriented than warrior would probably be a good choice for exploring the game, since it seems like this one sticks to the original everquest trend of warrior being a monster in a group but paladin/shadow knight (dire lord in pantheon) being better to solo with due to their healing and utility played project 99 for a few weeks as my first dip into actual EQ earlier this year, and to my relatively fresh eyes it's remarkable how much they seem to have captured the world design of that while modernizing the gameplay pretty well - for better or for worse, the punishing elements in pantheon feel deliberate rather than the result of being so early in 3d game history which was my biggest problem with trying to get into p99

i havent given this game much thought over the course of its development, seeing this makes me a bit interested in seeing the final product. keep at it devs. imagine the graphics being so dated are on purpose to give that old school MMO feel. i havent looked at the puter requirements but by the looks of it, it can run on a potato which of course opens it up to a far larger audience than the amazing graphics games that consistently let us down in other ways.

The devs had to start almost from scratch two years ago. When Unity (the engine they were using) got greedy with their license change fiasco. Releasing an mmorpg on their engine with their proposed changes would bankrupt the developers. They made the decision to develop their own engine and start from scratch. What you're seeing is a small developer make a new engine and mmo in roughly two years. Yeah, it's rough. But the alternative was to never release the game on account of what Unity was doing to their license.
@Pyriold
@Pyriold 19 күн бұрын
@@keldor8302 Wrong. They still use unity and they want to upgrade to unity 6. The problem was that at their previous graphics fidelity, with their limited man power, they just could not create as much content as is needed for a huge scale MMO. So they either had to make a very small scale MMO, kill the game or make this change that allows them to make content like 10 times faster. While i liked the old style i think they made the right decision.

You ppl and your nostalgia for obnoxious and tedious mechanics that serve only to waste your time is nauseating at this point. How many games with this mechanic have to fail in the current market till you realize your nostalgia is why the games you want never succeed. Also, it doesn't even make sense. It's not like a corpse run is more realistic. I don't recall anyone i knew coming back to life after a 5k spirit run. If you want hardcore then a hardcore game mode makes sense and adds immersion. Long corpse runs are simply lazy development and people like you allow those lazy developers to spin it as "old school" or "classic". Gimme an actual break man.

Things you dislike - Most of them will improve with time except running back to corpse and probably the npc chase, but the length of the chase is individual though, and depending on what mob it is. I have been playing ~1 year now and i must say the amount of work VR have done under 2024 is very impressive, can't wait to see what they will implement and polish under 2025. Pantheon rise of the Fallen is my new home when it comes to MMOrpg. An advise - Try to find a group and do a run into the Goblincave at lvl ~5-8, that was my first group dungeon in Pantheon, and i loved it - It felt dangerous and rewarding, and kept me on my toes all time ..Observe, this is not a game for those that crave handholding in everything they do, one actually have to figure things out in Pantheon with friends or by oneself.

@michaelmorrison5280
@michaelmorrison5280 19 күн бұрын
The tediousness is intentional to foster communication and cooperation between players. It's not bad design, it's just designed for social play at the expense of solo players. Say you die far from where you're bound, you message a healer in the zone you died in and ask for a resurrection. Many are willing to help, some might ask for payment, a very small minority will outright ignore you. You make connections, you give and receive favors, you make a name for yourself on your server. Everyone now knows the name Zoltar, and he was on screen for like 2 minutes. That's also why the corpse mechanics exist. Some classes have skillsets that make corpse retrieval easy. Wizards, Rogues, Enchanters, Necromancers, Summoners, all are good for retrieving corpses, some easier than others. Also, how much challenge do you expect at level 1-5 bro? Those are literally the tutorial levels.

Still really in Alpha, with non optimal performance, not all zones or classes or races, basic models, and bad UI. they call it EA cause they need the money from Steam purchases, but there will be wipes and this is not final product. Having all that said, its addictive, rewarding, and maddening all at once. Not great for your mental health! In my opinion darkness is too brutal, and they can point you to your corpses at least. That said, grouping is real, you build reputation, people either trust you or not. People will not go places with you if you are misbehaving. Its the real thing. The game was sometimes not easy, it forced you to more or less always team up. When you died in EQ your body had everything on it. Asking for help was normal and other players most of the time did help you. I remember dying in lower guk once in classic EQ as a warrior and it was painful to get my body back. So I asked others for help and they showed up to support because they know how hard doing a corpse run can be. It really is a good game it is just people today cant put in the time to see and experience it and they just brush it off as being bad.

Death is something you fear, unlike pretty much every other game, where it doesn't really matter that much. It means you have to think before you do something. You have to plan, because if you don't respect the mobs, they will kill you. If you know where the zone line is, you can run your train to the zone line, and cross over, which you'll lose aggro. Death can be a Pita, but I've had great experiences in the process of going after my corpse as well. Because I've made friends that helped me while doing it. Also, not sure if Pantheon has this or not, but EQ did. You can use /corpse, and drag your corpse. Usually, you can Activate it a small distance from your corpse, which will basically summon your corpse to you. So you can do it, outside the aggro range of a mob, or you can make a macro with /corpse on it, and just run by, spamming it, and just keep dragging your corpse, till you get some place save. Corpse runs can be a pita, but I'm glad to see Pantheon is doing it. If you don't respect death, or the mobs, then it really makes fighting mobs boring. Having Consequences for your actions, is very important.

The game was being made in Unity and was nearing early release state a few years ago. When Unity pulled their greedy bullshit. The devs had to jump ship and start almost from scratch two years ago. What you're seeing is essentially an mmo made in a little over two years by a small developer. It's rough, it's incomplete, and has a long road ahead still. But much of that rests on the head of Unity's greed a few years ago. The licensing changes would have bankrupt and shuttered the developers if they released using Unity.

@@keldor8302 i do not want to cause a dust up here, but graphics are the over lay for your lore, systems, quests, and mechanics. What i hear when people talk about the unity portions, and it was crippling, was that they had nothing else going for this game beyond graphics. i am not a coder and i dont know who game are made, but i would think there should have been much more under the hood than the graphics. i think this game is fun. i just dont know where it is going or if it will make it.

The chokehold this game has on me. Its exactly what I've been looking for since Everquest scars of velious. Once luclin came around it added too many QoL that hurt the hardcore nature of the game, which was a slippery slope that lead to more things leaving eq unrecognizable. Pantheon is a return to form ive been craving jumping from mmo to mmo looking for the eq experience. Ive leveled every class to level 5 so far and a shaman and monk to level 10. I know the general audience is going to hate this game and thats fine. Not every game needs to be made for everybody. hell if eq can survive for 25 years with a niche audience, I think pantheon has the potential to do the same.

Once you get to about level 5 and start doing the grouped areas and seeing better abilities and harder enemies it gets more and more addicting. With entire zones basically being like a dungeon such as Halnir’s cave at about level 10 with mechanics and fights that become much more engaging and difficult

This game is the most fun I've had in an MMO in a very, very long time. The particle effects are gorgeous. The main visual work it needs is animation, character models and UI. But the bones are SO solid. It plays so smoothly, and grouping is a lot of fun. I think the death penalty is good though. It gives you that wariness that other games lack. You're afraid to die and try to avoid it and it limits some areas you can go solo unless you're very creative. I love it.

Craig, our hero taking another one for the team, Craig you got f'ed 4 times because you lost experience twice on top of losing items and a death run. Lose loot, experience and levels on death, just what we all wanted the ability to play a game and make negative progress after playing for hours.

Yes, it's called player vs environment (PVE), and requires you to not mindlessly run around killing mobs without a thought in your mind. Now there's consequences to death, which makes you a bit more weary about running through a zone or going into a new area to fight. Some of us enjoy that. If you rather collect 25 quests, stare at a minimap while running from waypoint to waypoint then yea, this game wont be for you.

u obv could never handle a true mmorpg like back in the day. It makes me laugh because the punishment was worse in the classic games and people can't deal with logical game mechanics.

Considering the few hundred thousand people playing HARDCORE WoW. Where dying means your character is just done unless you transfer it. There's clearly an audience that wants their games to have a sense of risk vs reward. He was in an area designed for small groups to grind mob spawns. He got greedy and paid the price. That's a lesson you have to learn in this game. Also, if he had a shaman or cleric. They could have ressed him. Which not only prevent the run back. But also helps restore some of the lost xp. At higher levels, Necromancers can literally summon your corpse for you that also restores some of the lost xp. The death system adds weight and meaning to your choices. It also creates a demand for certain classes. Giving more purpose than simply "do damage, heal damage, tank damage." This game does have its issues. It's in an alpha state. But the death system isn't one of those issues. This isn't the game for you. That's okay. But don't try to spin that as a negative for everyone. This is a selling point for some.

As an original EQ player from March of 1999, it was amusing to watch someone experience what we went through in the classic MMO mode. When WOW came out a lot of game mechanics changed as a result of players not liking the harsh death systems, lack of in-game maps, quest and non-hand holding. Pantheon, for all intent and purpose, is designed to recreate that old school feeling. Your impressions were fair and understandable, considering the day an age we're in with game mechanics and graphics. A close friend of mine is still playing EQ. Amazing to think it's been 25 years.

You did not get the point of corpse runs. Nobody thinks they are fun. Because they are not fun you want to avoid them. That leads to way more respect for the in game world and way more adrenaline release if things get dicey.
@Thee-_-Outlier
@Thee-_-Outlier 19 күн бұрын
@Pyriold you make it make less sense with that reasoning. The punishment shouldn't WASTE irl time. The punishment shoudk take xp which it does or perhaps if you a real sadomasochist then losing your gear without being able to run and get it would also be an appropriate punishment. Making you ghost run is not immersive or creative and is a flat out insult and disrespect for a players playtime. You make your reply as if ghost runs are the only option to have the desired effect. It's been 25 years, I think we can come up with something new, no?
