I am extremely proud to mention that in 1971 I performed this amazing work here in Australia with no less a personage than the great Pinchas Zukermann. There was only one performance and it was the most difficult work I had ever performed up till then. I was not completely happy with my performance,Pinchas was naturally superb,But I was consoled when Pinchas said that I did well.He also said that before he came out here top perform it he had performed this piece FIVE times in the US with Daniel Barenboim and it was not until the fifth performance that they were both happy with it.Their performance ,that is.

This chamber double concerto for piano, violin and 13 winds composed by Berg as a birthday gift to Schoenberg is an absolute masterwork, full of contrapunctal combinations. The first movement is a theme with variations for piano and orchestra, the second an adagio for violin and orchestra, and the thrird a synthesis if the two first ones. The number 3 is one of the keys of the composition. It represents the friendship between Schoenberg, Berg and Webern. The German notation of the first notes of the concerto represent as much as possible their names.

One of my first encounters with modern music was this piece, via Paul Crossley’s TV programme on it. I was completely perplexed by it but bought the DG recording a few months later and came to really appreciate/love it.

For all the original sonorities and otherworldliness, I sometimes wonder if this piece is just a little too much of a good thing. There are moments that are enthralling throughout, but I don't think I've ever made it through the 3rd movement w/o my mind wandering. I sometimes find that at these moments the question comes to mind unbidden (as I'm struggling to hold on): is it brilliant counterpoint or is it just a big mess? And yet, I always find myself wanting to come back to it. I'm glad this performance exists. I don't foresee any of my local musical organizations ever taking this on.

En même temps c’est dodécaphonique c’est compréhensible que beaucoup n’aiment pas …

@@cranef8299 En fait, cette pièce est encore écrite dans l'atonalité libre, c'est-à-dire qu'elle n'est pas dodécaphonique.
