I moved to Austin in 1986, my brother, who already lived there, told me that we had to go to Antone's and listen to the blues. I already loved the blues, and I had been to Austin a few times before, but I had not yet been to Antone's. One of the first shows I saw there was Albert Collins. I was blown away. We saw him every time he came to town, which was frequently. One night during a break, I was standing outside enjoying some fresh air and having a smoke. There was an almost invisible door right beside me--it had no outer doorknobs. The door opened, and a large bouncer set a chair right outside the door. The door closed. About a minute later, the door opens again, and AC sat down in that chair. It was just the two of us. He looked up at me, and said, "Hey, buddy, got a light?" I lit his cigarette, and for the next 10 minutes we shot the shit. It was very cool. When he was finished, he knocked on the door, and the large man opened the door, and the chair and AC disappeared. He said, "See you next set, buddy." Yes you will. The man is a legend.

Now i see why SRV had Albert Collins play with him everytime he was in town. Tommy Shannon said that SRV would describe the players he drew insperation from as 'real'..and Albert was the real deal. When you use your fingers and pluck the string you get such a strong attack. Combine that with a telecaster and a capo to tighten the string and you've got some blues power.

In the late 80s I got to do a Blues Cruise circling the island of Manhattan underneath the Brooklyn Bridge up to the Statue of Liberty with Buddy Guy for 3 hours. And a short time later that summer I got to do the same thing with Albert Collins. Talk about what happened must be like there it is. Got to drink some beers with Buddy Guy on the boat after the show it was so small and intimate only like a hundred people are less the most amazing private concerts imaginable. Years go by and I get caught up in life and forget but when I see these videos it brings me right back. Plus these guys at all musicians

+samme79 How can you say he's underrated when you had no clue until recently? Those of us who have been listening to him for many years certainly rate him highly!

Deb Lubin He's underrated because I don't hear people talking about him when it comes to the blues. You usually hear about Stevie, BB, and in some sense Jimi but you almost never hear of Albert Collins. He is a legend of the blues but to many, he isn't known that well. Hell even me stumbling into him was because of randomly scrolling on the suggested videos
