Vassy asked several times if Alberta should increase taxation of the oil companies. In the 80's Pierre Trudeau created the National Energy Program which was a large tax directed at the oil companies, and only the oil companies. The result was the oil industry in Alberta got into financial trouble - massive cuts in spending, massive lay offs, the Calgary real estate market collapsed with a huge number of foreclosures. This all happened at a time of higher oil prices and international oil industry was doing very well while Canadian oil industry collapsed under Pierre Trudeau's tax that targetted the oil industry. So that is the answer to Vassy's question. It is also why Alberta is soooo quick to defend the oil industry.

Alberta, like all petro-states, is over reliant on unstable fossil fuel revenues instead of a secure tax regime funded by citizens.
