Alberto Evaristo Ginastera (Barracas, Buenos Aires, 11 de abril de 1916 - Ginebra, 25 de junio de 1983) fue un compositor argentino de música académica contemporánea, considerado uno de los más importantes del siglo XX en América Latina, y decano de la Facultad de Artes y Ciencias Musicales de la Universidad Católica Argentina desde 1959 hasta 1964.
Estudió en el Conservatorio Williams de Buenos Aires, del que se graduó en 1938.
Entre 1945 y 1947 estudió en Estados Unidos con Aaron Copland en Tanglewood. Al regresar a Argentina, fundó junto a otros músicos la Liga de Compositores, la Facultad de Música de la Universidad Católica, de la que fue su primer decano y la Escuela de Altos Estudios Musicales del Instituto Di Tella, que dirigió hasta su emigración.
Creó asimismo el Conservatorio de La Plata en 1949 y en 1951 la Filial Nº1 del mismo, posteriormente llamado Conservatorio Julián Aguirre, en la localidad de Banfield. Regresó a Estados Unidos en 1968 y se mudó a Europa dos años más tarde, donde se quedó hasta su muerte, acaecida en Ginebra.
Entre sus obras se encuentran tres óperas: Don Rodrigo (1964), Bomarzo (1967) -con libreto de Manuel Mujica Láinez y basada en la novela homónima de este escritor, objeto de censura por parte del gobierno del general Onganía y prohibida en el Teatro Colón, para luego ser estrenada en 1972, repuesta en 1984 y 2003 y filmada en Italia con el título de Bomarzo de 2007-, y Beatrix Cenci (1971). Esta última ópera, basada en la trágica historia de la noble renacentista italiana del mismo nombre, la compuso con el poeta Alberto Girri.
También escribió varios conciertos (dos para piano, dos para chelo, uno para violín y uno para arpa), otras piezas orquestales, ballets (por ejemplo, Panambí, 1940), música de cámara y un número relativamente grande de piezas para piano.
Ginastera agrupó su música en tres períodos -nacionalismo objetivo, nacionalismo subjetivo y neoexpresionismo- división que ha sido cuestionada y relativizada por algunos especialistas. Su alumno más famoso fue el célebre y genial bandoneonista y compositor de tango Astor Piazzolla.

What cool pieces, especially the third one! Ginastera’s harmonies and rhythms are so unique!! There are moments throughout the third piece that remind me of Kapustin, but this was composed when he was 3 - Amazing!!!

She plays beautifully, but is that a misread of the rhythms at 2:43 (bottom line, first two bars)? It appears that the chords are meant to be played together and they were simply notated this way to avoid blurring together (though that shouldn't have been an issue with the chord of the second bar). They're both dotted quarters, so it seems that would make sense.

Also the E-natural on the sixth eighth note of the fourth full bar. It may be an error in the score and the composer meant E-natural, but according to the score it should be an E-flat.

Renato Fabbro: You're right. The meter is 12/16. Those two bars are written as if collapsed into a single staff (i.e. no rests to complete each bar as for two separate staves). So, adding up what's written, you have 3/16 + 3/16 + 3/8 + 3/8 = 3/16 + 3/16 + 6/16 + 6/16 = 18/16, if the chords are played as written but in succession (as here). If the chords are played simultaneously you have 3/16 + 3/16 +6/16 = 12/16. They appear at first glance as if meant to be played successively because putting the upper chord directly above the lower chord would have made a big typographic mess.

Norteña really-really-really reminds me Des Pas sur la Neige (First Book's Prélude n°6) from Debussy, completed with Ravel's Le Gibet. Brillant piece nevertheless.

the melody is a typical rythm from argentina called vidala . you can listen for example to Canto en la rama by aca seca trio for a more traditional folk sound. This is that music mixtured with xx century harmonies
