me too! it’s so nice to show some love to old toys who’ve been through a long life, they deserve some tenderness ❤️
There's something so comforting about those soft-shaped, gently pastel toys of the late 80s / early 90s. Takes me straight back to puffy unicorn stickers, Care Bear t-shirt nighties, Polly Pockets, and the ever-multiplying amount of little plastic hairbrushes that seemed to materialise from nowhere. 🌸💙

I wish they came back to this formula of making toys/dolls, it's just so beautiful and simple, I don't like these flashy wacky fashion dolls with ugly eye-burning color palettes and patterns and gigantic heads and eyes 😔 they've become too repetitive nowadays, especially with the blind bag gimmick. hey! i’m a doll customized/restorer and i have a great hair styling tip for you! pouring hot- not boiling- water over the hair while in curlers helps keep them in shape! because it’s plastic, the heat shapes it into better curls. if you don’t do it too hot- so the plastic doesn’t melt- you can get a really cool hairstyle! hope this helps :D

I'm no expert, but I think the "grime" in her hair might be glue. Some dolls with rooted hair use glue to secure it, and it can melt/seep out over time, causing a sticky/grimey feeling, and even yellow discoloration around the "scalp". Idk how she was made, so I could be totally wrong. Also I haven't finished the video yet so if the glue theory is mentioned I'm gonna feel silly lol
@GLORIOUSCHONK3 жыл бұрын
It's either that or rust, as lots of toys, especially vinyl animals, used metal washers to secure the hair (see around 15:10) back in the day. I say this because I have a G1 pony with hair "rust" or something.

Mimi's face and hair reminds me a tiny bit of these toys that were sold in the very early 80s called "Sea Wees" They were usually sold in sets of a mermaid mom with her mermaid baby and a mer-pet, like a walrus, or a half parrot with a fish tail and a sailor's hat. The mermaids had brushable hair, and they came with a teeny comb and a floating shape (sometimes like a lilypad) that they could rest on. They were darling!

This reminds me of when I was visiting a neighbor of ours as a kid and the neighbor’s kids found a little orange kitten under one of their cars on their driveway. He was skinny but not starved, and very very dirty and flea-bitten. They took him inside and bathed him in the bathroom sink. We could see the dead fleas and blood come off of him. My neighbor dried the kitty with a towel, then a low hair dryer. At first he was afraid of the hair dryer, but as he dried off, he realized he felt better and he began purring loudly. They ended up keeping him. They named him Henry.

I love rescuing old dolls (50s-80s) and one of the coolest things I learned was the fabric softener trick for matted hair. It’s amazing. Also, sometimes you’ll want to let more “open” dolls soak in soapy water because of bugs, dirt, and mold that can get inside of the body. ❤

You might be the cutest person on the planet. I have really bad depression and anxiety which really affects my life but your videos really help. There is something about you that I find really comforting. Thank you x

I love this video so much! I don’t know if this will help for the kind of toy restoration that you do, but when I detangle doll hair (especially American girl doll hair), the best detangler that I’ve found is fabric softener diluted with water :)

I wanna do this so bad now and restore a toy! The satisfaction of cleaning up a grimy toy and making it look like new is so great. Cleaning and brushing the hair is my favorite part since I always loved doing that as a kid. Something about it is just so satisfying.

You did such an amazing job! You definitly inspired me to keep a look out for vintage toys at my local thrift stores. And it was SO brilliant and fun to add that section of going through the little pretty packaging and catalogue spreads, that was so smart
