Chalk one up for the books with a great match Chris "The King" Alo and Pete "The Boss" Pardo. George - great hosting job. Hope to see you in this spot again. Heavy wears the crown but Chris Alo comes out swinging in his own inimitable style and candidly offering his critique of the chosen album after a great understanding of his history with the band. Long live the King. Then Pete does his usual great approach of the album, why he should like it and what he thinks about each of the songs and the album overall. Two good friends in match with great respect for one another and special thanks to George for getting them to discuss how they each came to pick the album chosen for the other. Thanks to Chris and Pete for their time doing the homework and sharing their thoughts with us and each other. Thanks everyone for an entertaining start to Sunday.

Enjoyed this one a lot! Great job by George - I especially liked the probing question about what motivated the album choices. And I love the honesty of these 'misses'. I do enjoy seeing when albums connect, but I enjoy this too - and especially when it involves some respectful detail about why it's 'not for you'. Life is too short to waste on music you don't love when there's a ton out there you do love and would love - but by the same token these assignments give us a chance to try something we MIGHT love if only we give it a chance. Comfort zones are there to be pushed out of and I thank SoT for pushing mine quite often!

Thing I love most about the 'Homework' episodes is the discovery of new material and subsequent analysis of the contrasting opinions on each side. I play both albums immediately after and see if I agree or disagree. As a lifelong fan of rock, metal and prog, both The Misfits and Ghost had slipped through my fingers. Great to finally listen to some legendary punk by a band I knew only via the logo on countless teenage and middle-aged shirts and to discover a newer band with some super catchy riffs albeit spiked by the punch of some sonic and lyrical cringe. Fact is I want to hear more from Ghost and now understand the hype around a band called The Misfits. Thanks for the homework assignment, SOT. 🍻

I love it when Chris mentions Götz Kühnemund, ex-editor of German Rock Hard magazine. As a metal fan in the 80s and 90s in Germany you either read Metal Hammer or Rock Hard, and Götz used to write for both, at least for a few years. I soon discovered that he was the writer whose musical taste matched mine the most, so whatever albums he raved about I bought blindly. My taste has changed drastically in the last 25 years and I moved away from metal almost entirely, but one of the few metal bands whose albums I bought was The Devil’s Blood, based on Götz“s raving reviews, of course. Cheers, mate.

I don't understand how older music fans can dismiss Ghost as a gimmick when they grew up with Alice Cooper, Kiss, King Diamond, Misfits, Rob Zombie, Gwar etc. It's the same thing but for a newer audience. I personally love theatrics in music. It's great when bands want to give fans more entertainment for their dollar, especially when there are thousands of bands who do nothing but come out, play their songs, then leave, and that's all you get. At the same time I understand where Chris is coming from, the excitement I felt for Ghost during their first three albums is gone. But I'm going to get the new Ghost. As a metalhead, I prefer they stayed a little heavier, but at the same time I've completely lost interest in newer metal in it's current state. I've been delving more into 70s heavy/hard rock trying to find a hidden gem in the vein of Black Sabbath, with some success, and some of it pushing my comfort zone

I think Pete would have preferred " Static Age " by The Misfits. It is their first album ( but it wasn't released until 20 years later ). I'm pretty sure he wouldn't like the entire thing, but tracks like: " Hybrid Moments ", " Theme For a Jackal ", " In the Doorway" - I think he'd love those tracks - the last two are very Doors-ish and more like solo Danzig.

Cool episode, in fact, everything featuring George Lamie is awesome by default! Totally get Chris' opinion on Ghost in general and the later albums, but I'm also a fan from the very beginning and completely agree with Pete that they're not a band for everyone. For me they are the KISS of today and - as a lifelong fan - they bring back a piece of my childhood to me. Tobias is a pretty interesting guy and I also find it interesting how much the band took off in the States. Like Chris I was pretty shocked when they started filling big arenas. Misfits are the Kiss of the punk world to me, whether that's good or bad depends on whether you like them I guess. I understand their importance but it doesn't really do much for me.

When I first listened to the new Ghost album, I was in Chris’ corner. I’ve listened to it several times since then, it really is a good catchy album. They’re going for a certain 80s style and they nailed it in my opinion. So I see why some would hate it and some would love it. I’ve been on both sides of the argument. Their appearance is the only thing I think is a lame reason to dislike any band though but still love Chris.

Chris, you should have popped Pete's Misfits cherry with Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood (1983) which is far thrashier and heavier. In fact, it even rivals Slayer's Reign In Blood. Don't get me wrong, I love Walk Among Us, but it's much more bubble gum pop than Earth A.D. Btw, I'm probably just as much a rabid Danzig fan as you are Chris. Misfits have long been a favourite of mine and Walk Among Us has a handful of their best tracks. Astro Zombies! The new Ghost album has been growing on me over the last few weeks, which is funny seeing as it's built to be such an immediate flashy pop metal behemoth. I was also mostly a fan of the first album but I've been more or less on board for the whole time. I think this one succeeds in what it sets out to do. I do have issues with big shiny super-clean productions in modern metal but I think it works in this case and ultimately I can't help but sing along.

Introduce the reviewers and let them head for the stratosphere unencumbered. I saw Ghost in 2012 opening for Mastodon and Opeth; not knowing them from a hole in the wall. They were interesting, but my take "musically" was they're aping Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come (almost with Android Funnels on guitars). They definitely had a 1971-1972 vibe from in the early 2010's. As for the Misfits they have always been an acquired taste.

I effin' love old 70's Aerosmith but detest the drech they put out from the 80's onward (with the exception of "Honkin' On Bobo" and some of "Unplugged"). In other words, they were one of my first and favorite bands in the 1970s who to me did an about-face antithetical flip and became one of the wost bands who were making a shit-ton of money putting out crap for radio and elevator airplay.

I too was taken aback by the "new" persona of Popa but enjoyed the show. I will be 60 this year and was really into punk/hardcore in the early 80's but never got into the Misfits. Completely with you on the Misfits, Pete. As a metal kid a lot of us in the 80's our introduction to the Misfits was Metallica covering them. The thing is I had no desire to hear the originals because like you I do not like punk. The one difference is I don't like his band either and did not like that Samhain suckfest thing he did either.

I'm with Pete on The Misfits and I have many friends that love them & I've tried to get into them over the years but just not into it or even Danzig's solo work. As far as Ghost they are pretty good and I think it's pretty cool how they kinda transition to different themes from album to album. I'm into the new album but man that ride cymbal sounds to synthetic! Those drums have got to be programed or at least an electronic kit. Any way they should have used a better ride cymbal, NOT A DEAL BREAKER but it would have made all the difference.

Ghost is always a pop rock band for me so impera was exactly as i thought it would be in terms of heaviness (or lack of). Loved the album but gotta say twenties is a weird song. I guess there has to be one per album.

Grumpy Uncle Alo is the best when he tells that story. Also Ghost has always sucked.

I like or even love a lot of punk rock, but The Misfits have never stuck for me. I do love the first Ghost album and can take or leave everything else they've ever done. It's pretty high quality music but really not for me.

I wonder if Pete would like Graves' vocals on the more recent Misfits stuff. I prefer Danzig, but Graves is pretty damn good as well! Ghost I can't stand at all (not even their older stuff).

I think Pete would’ve enjoyed Famous Monsters a lot more. Grave’s vocals were more complex, lyrics based on horror movies and more metal
