Okay, I think I might provide some clarity. After all of his touring of Grace ended in 1996, over the next year he really had no idea what he wanted to do with the next record. My Sweetheart the Drunk was the title of the record that had stuck around for a very long time and a lot of the song titles originated from that earlier time in 1996 too. He continuously felt this pressure to follow up Grace and the first disc of Sketches is him over the span of late 1996 in early 1997 trying to record the songs he had at the time for the album. Ultimately, though, the majority of the he had recorded with Tom Verlaine and the sound of those songs didn’t fit his vision for this album. He wanted to make music that scared people, that really push the boundaries of the genre and of weirdness. He also really just wanted to Rock. So in the final months of his life, he moved to Memphis Tennessee and bought a four track recorder and that’s the demos you hear from I Know We Could Be so Happy onwards. These songs have a rough quality because they were unfinished demos that he planned to record in the summer of 1997 with the producer of Grace, Andy Wallace. He was really excited about the new energy and the new spark he had in these songs. A lot of them were messy and unfinished, but as much as these songs were the polar opposite of Grace, they had just as much energy and passion as those on Grace. Songs like Nightmares by the Sea and Witches Rave’ were also intended to be re-recorded with slightly rewritten vibes, lyrics, and craziness. Sadly though, on the day that he was going to start practicing to record with his band, he drowned in the Memphis river, because of a reckless decision. He WASN’T suicidal but a lot was changing in his life, but he wanted to settle down and truly make the music he wanted to make. To me, it’ll always be one of the most devastating cases of lost potential, this album, but more importantly, Jeff Buckley’s life. R.I.P. Jeff Buckley ❤

Really like Jewel Box. Disc 1 was mostly solid. I don't think the track listing was even together at that point. They may have scrapped those sessions and started over. Verlaine was out of the picture and Andy Wallace was taking over the project. Thanks for reacting to Sketches

The percussion on I Know We Could Be So Happy is Jeff tapping on the mic. Most of these songs are self-recorded 4 track demos with Jeff doing everything from just before he drowned. They swear he didn't kill himself, but Murder Suicide Meteor Slave and Thousand Fold are dark AF yo

The only thing I don't like about the second disc is the inclusion of Satisfied Mind, which is a cover of an old country song that he recorded on the radio in 1992, and isn't part of this era of work at all. Instead, I wish they had included the best of the other 4-track demos that for whatever reason were left off the album. 3 in particular that I recommend you listen to are: Peace Offering, Let's Bomb the Moonlight, and a really beautiful alternate version of You & I (which is entirely different from the version on disc 1), entitled, You & I (guitar version).

For another song by Jeff with the simple acoustic instrumentation and emotionally desperate urgency like you mentioned during Jewel Box I highly recommend the harrowing acoustic version of Woke Up In A Strange Place you can find if you search.

Nice review. Recommend « You’re so great » by Blur for your songs like Dagger list. I think it should fit right in.
