Get Free is literally the welcome to Norman F***ing Rockwell! That's why she's leaving the black (the darkness of her other art projects -as she said in the begining, her manifesto- like born to die, ultraviolence and honeymoon) and moving to the blues, the sound of the beach, Venice-California, the water (the color blue is an important theme in the first track of NFR as well). It isn't curious she used lyrics from "Ride", her own song on Paradise, and decided to say goodbye to that "Old Lana" using the same methaphore, but with a change in it. And that's important detail, Change and Heroin are two songs that make Get Free with a sense, she's not the same cause she really changed, and the conection with drugs is perfect because in the last track she sang "for _ and for _", and that people are Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston, who couldn't have the time for change their lives, so Lana did it for them. That's why I really love Get Free and Lust For Life as an album, is an underrated gem but probably the most important record on her discography, Lana is a new woman since LFL and the album cover is a proof of that cause is the first one where she's smiling, also is the first where she's diving into a politic sight (NFR and Blue Banisters do that too, so blue is definitely her color I guess) 💙

Did you know that 12 years ago, on September 26th The Weeknd discovered Lana Del Rey through tumblr, and was the first one to ask BBC Radio 1 to put 'Video Games' on their playlist. In fact in an interview Abel admits that when he met Lana, he felt that he had found the girl who was writing in her songs, that is, I found her muse for her songs. The Weeknd and Lana met in 2010, the year in which the Weeknd launched "Trilogy", and it is seen that they became very good friends, so much so that the voice of a woman who sounds in "Lonely Star" is inspired by Lana del Rey and it should be clarified that Lana helped a producer the album, "BBTM".On the surface, The Weeknd and Del Rey might seem like very different artists. After all, The Weeknd’s music hip hop and soul sound feels more in line with someone like Ariana Grande. Meanwhile, Del Rey’s career lives much more in line with rock-infused pop. However, the two artists are much more similar than the genres of their music might reveal.For instance, The Weeknd and Del Rey both often capture a dream-like quality in their songs. In addition, their lyrical content dips into dark territory, such as their preoccupation with drug references. So it makes sense they would work well together. And so they have. Beginning with The Weeknd’s 2015 single “Prisoner,” they’ve worked together on five songs.Although the Grammy Awards have yet to bestow a trophy to Del Rey, her work certainly makes a huge impact on The Weeknd. In fact, the “Blinding Lights” singer once revealed just how vital she is to his own music. In a 2015 interview with Pitchfork, The Weeknd explained the interconnected nature of Del Rey’s music and his own. “Me and Lana have been friends for a long time. I’ve inspired her. She’s inspired me. I feel like we’ve always been talking to each other through our music. She is the girl in my music, and I am the guy in her music. It’s just this ghostly collaboration that feels the most natural on the whole [Beauty Behind the Madness] album. Even the whole monologue intro on “Lonely Star” from [my 2011 mixtape] Thursday - I just realized now that that’s Lana. That’s Lana’s voice. I mean, it’s my voice pitched up, but it’s her. It’s who she is. She was definitely the first feature that I wanted to bring on this album.” The Weeknd and Del Rey are more than just collaborators, it seems. The pair’s music - according to The Weeknd - is spiritually linked. Perhaps this revelation puts into context not only the collaborations between these two but their respective catalogs as well. As great collaborations he has Prisoner, Party Monster where Lana makes Background vocals, Stargirl Interlude, Lust for Life and Money Power and Glory an unreleased remix by The weeknd for the album kissland but the original is from Lana's album Ultraviolence.Anyway, long life to this wonderful collaboration. Abelana Forever 🥰🥰. September 26 Abelana Anniversary. 12 years ago The Weeknd discovered Lana on Tumblr and they became friends ❤❤❤

And i love that when she is performing the same song live, on the pre-chorus when she sings about this beeing her modern manifesto and she says that she is doing it for all of us, she adds to the live version: For Amy (Winehouse and for Withney (Houston) who never got to fly at night bcs they were cought up in the dance of a cruel romance

One cool thing to fathom about this album and that makes it really interesting is that it closes the first part of Lana's discography. She said at that time that LFL was an album made for the fans, and to me it really closes the arc of the Lana Del Rey character on a positive note as she goes on about familiar topics but with a positive view on the future, while reflecting about the hopes for her greatest muse: America. To me, "Get Free" marks the death of Lana del Rey (as a character and the whole universe of sounds, motifs and aesthetics that she created and developed since Born to Die). Now she commits to a new future of self-reflecting and pursue of happiness, going out of the black and into the blue: the waves of Venice Beach and the whole universe of NFR. The way the album closes with the beach sounds is so great to lead us into her new phase. To me, NFR is the beginning of a deeply poetic and more personal stage, where the artist now is an Elizabeth Grant doing A LOT of self work, leaving LA to the midwest to get to a place where she can face her own traumas, explore her family dynamics, get to know what's really important to her (her family and her poetry), and eventually go back to Venice really knowing who she is and what she wants (hence Ocean Blv ending with VB and symbolizing the ending of another stage of her work). I'm really excited about her next work and to discover what the third phase of her artistic journey will look like! And can't wait for you guys to react and fathom Ultraviolence and Honeymoon, some of her best works to date! ✨
@sparkleclover
@sparkleclover 6 ай бұрын
Lana was never a character, what you're describing is just the result of her growing up and learning from past experiences. Lana actually responded to this idea back in 2019 when after NFR came out one review implied she had finally dropped her LDR persona. She said "Never had a persona. Never needed one. Never will." Lana has also said multiple times that Lizzy Grant and Lana Del Rey are the same person. The only difference is the name, nothing else.

I think you’re absolutely right about everything! Even the production changes drastically from this point forward (most thanks to the talented Jack Antonoff) but also thanks to Lana’s maturity as a persona. Also, one of the final songs from this album is called “Change”. I believe it states that the concept can’t be always the same, that it needs to become something more “honest”, because “change is a powerful thing” to do. And, in “Get Free”, she says “Finally, I’m crossing the threshold”, and “this is my commitment , my modern manifesto”, referring again to the character death you were talking about. I don’t even know why this comment doesn’t have more likes 👍. It’s a great analysis! Overall, this is a mixed vibe project, but is very interesting that a very hopeful album comes just before some other more “melancholic and thoughtful” ones. Definitely one of the greatest singers, writers and artists alive. We love you, Lana 🧡🌊🌺

based on HER OWN WORDS , Lana del Rey is NOT a persona or character!! She wrote about her real feelings and life! She actually is bothered by people implying this! IF you are a fan of her art, please refrain from spreading this false narrative, while it may make sense to YOU and sound reasonable on paper it is NOT TRUE!!!. Evolving and changing doesnt mean that your past was not true to yourself at the time, it just means you have a different perspective now and want to try other paths and methods. In her OWN words:"My life is my poetry, My lovemaking is my legacy, My thoughts are about nothing, and beautiful, and for free"

OMG I'm so happy you're back with another Lana! 🤍 Some of my thoughts about this record: I always believed that in "Change" Lana refers to the song "Wind of Change" by Scorpions which is about the political changes in the Soviet Union at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, which contributed to the collapse of the Soviet Union and the dissolution of the Eastern Bloc, which resulted in the end of the Cold War. It was my first association, because I'm from Poland, which was in the "Eastern Bloc" and this song is well known here and I think it suits the political topics Lana reffered to in this album. Another thing - when she sings "Topanga's hot tonight" and later: winter in the city Somethin' 'bout this weather made these kids go crazy (It's hot) even for February Somethin' 'bout this sun has made these kids get scary - I believe she's talking about the climate change And the last one, in "Get Free" she's singing "For AMY and for WHITNEY" but it was muted on the album, she sings it live, they are those "birds of paradise" who never got to fly at night 'Cause they were caught up in the dance 💔(she has their names tattooed across the top of her chest: "Whitney" and "Amy" on the right, and "Nina" and "Billie" on the left. They stand for Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone and Billie Holiday.)

Yes and I think she's alluding to climate change and environmental degradation more broadly on Beautiful People Beautiful Problems when she has the lyrics about the view of the planet from above, especially the lyric "til it runs red... with blood". And it's interesting then on the album that follows, NFR! she features the fires in California on the album cover art and repeats "LA's in flames, it's getting hot" in The greatest as well. I do think she is making these environmental references in her music that aren't often picked up on.

SO SO happy you guys are breaking down Lana. I am an OG stan. & Wait - "Heroin" is a total character based song! She is speaking from the perspective of one of the Manson Family women. It is one of my favorite songs since I am a HUGE true crime fan. There are SO many references to the Mansons in this song. Fun Fact: Topanga is where the Manson family lived :)

This is so much fun! 💖 It's like listening to L4L for the first time again. It always brings me back to the summer of 2017, when I was in the gap between school and sixth form and would take the bus to my part time job. Whenever I hear these songs I'm immediately reminded of sitting alone on the top deck of the bus, gazing out at the sunny countryside.

SAME!! This album literally saved my life. Going through some deep depression deep stuff this album pulled me out and kept me alive. It takes me back to summer 2017 July, hot summer days listening to these bangers and feel happy. A lot better now and just last year Lana is still along my side with ocean Blvd. love that woman so much 😢❤

"for ____ and for ____" in get free is for amy winehouse and whitney houston but she decided to take the names out out of respect. she sings it live, though. it references women who have been taken from the music industry because of their big hearts, addictions and vulnerability.

This album is the album that freed Lana Del Rey as an artist. It takes her out of the sad girl/lolita narrative and breaks the fourth wall by placing Lana as a real character. It's more autobiographical and conscious. Lana knows how to see both sides of situations, understand her feelings without them clouding her judgment. This is basically linked to the title and concept of the album. Lana, choosing to prioritize her desire for life and focusing on the simple things and thoughts that provoke or insult change, frees her from her heroine. It's worth pointing out that if you analyze Lana's addiction, it was the catalyst for the image of the sad Lolita Girl, since drugs brought her euphoria and instability. Lana never had full judgment about her emotions since the drugs put her in extreme states: melancholy and mania, with no middle point between the two. Distortions of images present that led her to think that all she could be is the broken Lolita, who was the lover of committed men or the glamor of toxic men and drug dealers. But by choosing herself and her life in general, she freed herself from these distortions to more reflective and realistic views of where she was. She also decides to break the curse of the 27 Club (a Hollywood curse that says addicted artists don't survive until 27) in her first performance of Get Free, she sang: "I'm doing this for Amy and Whitney, and all my birds in paradise who never got the chance." So it's basically like she's making a statement to herself, her artistry comes from a desire to make music to find joy in difficult situations and inspire others to find it too, thus creating a safe place for people to expose vulnerability while they seek hope and joy together. But, it is very easy for an artist to forget their artisticity when being controlled or allowing themselves to be controlled by the industry. And here she understands that there is no game to go by, a game from which she will not let herself fall. And this thought that she discovers in Lust For Life (especially at the end with Get Free) that the industry is nothing more than a game leads her to the serenity of the beach (NFR). An album where it's basically Lana cites everyday American life, and especially the industry, but with political awareness. So I don't understand why Lana Fans they underestimate this album too much, considering that it is basically pure art and the album that needed to be released for the Lana of today to exist. Also, Love is a song that Lana dedicated to the fans so it's Lana version of Long Live. 😂😂🥲😭🥺🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍

I love how Get Free touches on “war in my mind” from the Ride song , and then “just riding the RIDE”, plus, “not play someone’s (Video)game, but live my own life”. This album closer touches deeply on some of the saddest songs of her career, kind of changing their meaning from “black” to “blue”. AAAANNNND the follower song Norman Fucking Rockwell (opener of next album after LfL), actually circle-rounds to “your head in your hands as you color me BLUE”. Xoxo love ur videos

It will forever be my fav Lana album and the background soundtrack to my 2021/2022 (and life tbh) bc i listened to it on repeat numerous times and still do to this day. I'm so glad you both welcomed it and pictured the imagery the same way as i did and cant wait for the other two Lana albums!!

Change is such a healing, introspective, beautiful piece of art. I remember hearing it for the first time when it came out and I was 18, going through a lot, and it made me feel so understood and hopeful. Three years later I got it tattoed and it’s still my hymn 7 years later. “There's a change gonna come, I don't know where or when, but whenever it does, we'll be here for it"💘

I'm so glad you fathomed the theme of this album!! i can't believe some people think this is her least cohesive album. She talks about lust in songs like Love, Cherry, White Mustang, Groupie Love etc and also about life in Coachella, God bless America and Change etc. And overall, all the songs have a hopeful connotation, because there's this lust for life. Career wise, it's interesting to know that she took a shift in her music with this album, as it carries a more positive vision of life compared to Born to die or Ultraviolence. She really gets out of the black into the blue. Also Get free is a superior album closer because the beach sounds at the end literally brings us to the next album NFR and on the cover she literally is on a boat 😀 i'm unwell Anyways thank you for the Tomorrow never came and Change appreciation!! And if you love guitar you're gonna die over Ultraviolence, and Honeymoon has some of the most beautiful music she's ever composed !!

IF YOU ARE STEVIE NICKS FANS PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE READ MY COMMENT! You might already be aware of this, but there is a book called Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The book is inspired by Fleetwood Mac and the 70s, but specifically on the iconic 1997 Silver Springs performance with Buckingham. It is told through interview style, following the rise to fame about said band, Daisy Jones & The Six, specifically when they create what is considered the best rock album of all time. It might be entirely fictional, but it FEELS real. The book was then adapted into a tv series on Prime Video and they actually MADE said album for the show. it is AMAZING and it SOUNDS like an actual rock album from the 70s. anyways, all this to say is I would LOVE if you guys ever did a reaction to this album. Obviously, I will highly recommend reading the book and watching the tv show. If I can incentivize you any more, the show stars Riley Keough (Elvis' granddaughter), Sam Clafin and Suki Waterhouse. All actors sing and play the instruments and recorded the actual album. I am CERTAIN that you will love it!!
