"2112" by Rush is a surprising pick, but I can understand it. I was born in 1973 and my first exposure to Rush was "Tom Sawyer" and then "Time Stand Still". I listen to "Hold Your Fire" and "A Show of Hands" over and over. Going back to the early albums like "2112" took a bit of adjustment, even if I was already into prog from Yes.

"2112" is a strange album to not get into at first. But, I get it. You would've had the opposite reaction someone who likes the more prog sounding Rush albums would've had to "Roll The Bones" and those more synth driven albums. I was lucky, I got into Rush with "Signals" and "Moving Pictures", a perfect blend of the prog and synth sounding versions of Rush. So, I was easily able to adapt to both sounds.

For those who liked early 90s Slaughter, check out 1997s Revolution. I like it BETTER than Stick It. To me, it covers so much more territory. It has early 70s glam sound " American pie "(my fave track), "can we find a way"(60s psych sound), a few that would have fit on Stick it- "tongue n groove" " stuck on you" and "you're my everything"(my 2nd fave track), 60s sitar "ad majorem", "guck" (beautiful guitar solo), "heat of the moment" was more of a modern 90s sound. Overall, it's more of a musical journey that you don't expect from this type of band

For me that Warrant record may crack my top10 of all time. Subhuman Race I never got into. I try still, pretty often, I just don’t get it. Same for that Ratt record. As for Pantera, same… it took Vulgar to come out before I had that “a-ha” moment. One record that I hated the second I heard it was Vince Neil’s Carved In Stone. My issue with the Queen album is the fact of it being Paul Rodgers, I wish if they were going to do this it would have been with Adam Lambert , or something in that vain. This was like getting a Mick Jagger or Steve Perry something like that someone already legendary with their own sound to front the band, which is fine for a live record but new stuff, to be honest I would have liked it more if Brian and Roger split the singing since both are strong vocalists in their own ways, so I don't dislike the record overall just don't revisit it much at all
@gkirms Жыл бұрын
For this Queen album it was a stretch with Paul Rodgers singing lead. First off, the fact that it was Paul singing and not Freddie was the starter to turn anyone off. The second would be, to your point, it doesn't even remotely sound like a Queen album although Surf's Up ... School's out might be the closest to that Queen sound. I'm surprised that they haven't put a final album out with Adam Lambert yet because that might be the closest thing to the Queen sound. For '2112' that was my first introduction to Rush as well as 'All the World's a Stage'. The record company was pushing Rush to create an album with more radio hits. They did the opposite and from that point onward they exploded.

I liked Yes' The Quest right away, but I simply can NOT get into Heaven and Earth... I feel the difference was Jon Davison growing into the roll... In Heaven and Earth he sounds meek and a bit weak, like he didn't want to go 'balls out' with the lyrics because he didn't want to overshadow everything and so it makes his vocals come off surprisingly flat for a Yes album... Especially when you compare it to what he could do in concert... with The Quest he seems more at ease IMO and uses more of his range which makes all the difference.

Queen with Paul Rodgers' The Cosmos Rocks should have been the point they made a NAME for their new band... I get why they toured like that (marketing) but as the album it was both disrespectful and disingenuous to claim it was Queen at all. It likely would have been more favorably accepted if they did. But of course, sales probably would have been half what they got... which is why they did it, sadly.
@BrendonSnyder Жыл бұрын
Well they did go and and tour as Queen + Paul Rodgers and set a precedent for it. I’m ok as long as they call it Queen + like they do with Adam Lambert. While Paul did well live, his song writing does not fit Queen at all. I had such high hopes for the album and was so let down by it. Now I just enjoy it for what it is.
