Really disappointing. Maybe if Carlitos hadn't lost the first, there would have been time for him to make a comeback. But I am not surprised that Carlos was overwhelmed. This match was massively hyped, there was also the "passing of the Spanish mantle" thing in his mind. Novak's movement is smoother than Carlos, and it was clear to me the brilliant anticipation that Novak showed that got him points. Interesting about Djokovic about early match endurance. I think the high octane game of Carlos is always going to be heavy on the body, although in some ways I feel that Carlos's game could be less intense by adding in more finesse shots, and less grinding/scrambling - if that is possible in the modern game. But remember Alcaraz ran out of gas against Sinner this year too, but here it seems like stress plus an intense second set cracked him.

Hey Gil, it was GLORIOUS for two sets until set 3 games 2-3. Agree that Nole may be more AWESOME fitness wise than LeBron, Jordan with maybe only Messi or Kareem in his class & level. I did pick Novak in 4 if he won the 1st set but not with a lame Carlos set 3 forward. Agree Fitness, Nerves & Weather played their role. Think Carlos did not play any longer matches in RG-23. Novak did. Think Novak's going at Carlos' forehands and playing with pace & power making Carlos run was a brilliant tactict. Alcaraz started making more and more errors about Djokers' skills helped win set 1 + Novak took his 1 break early so Carlos was playing from behind. Set two felt like Carlos was starting to get the uper hand going into set 3. Novak looked like he might be running out of gas at the end of set 2. Then Carlos came up lame & then Novak took over as Carlos lost mobility & power. Plus Nole held serve after being down love-40. Great stuff as always.Gill. Looking forward to the final for Nole to make RG#3 & GS#23 happen. Cheers, Milan

It's hard to believe that Alcaraz was not properly conditioned. I assume he has the best training and nutrition available. I wonder if the cramping is from something else. By the way,, early in Djokovic's career he did retire early from matches, due to cramps and other issues. I've followed tennis prior to the 2000's and have been witnessed Djokovic quitting matches in real time. He did correct that and maybe Alcaraz can as well.

Nutrition! Djokovic improved his health with changing diet . One physician from Serbia helped him . He had some allergies ( diary, red meat and similiar) ... Later Nole went FULL vegan bcs he noticed that consuming even chicken or fish takes a lot of his energy , he couldn't digest it well ... About cramps, I'm pretty sure Alcaraz should look at his diet first ... Food allergies could go undetected , sometimes it's more about intolerance then allergie...Anyway, best wishes to him ✌🏻

Tennis has ugly crowds, including many people who don’t play sports. What Novak Djokovic does on a tennis court is otherworldly because defense is so much harder than offense. Returning a top player’s serve is as hard as hitting Shohei Ohtani’s pitching. Returning ground strokes hit at 100 miles an hour (160 km/hr) is as hard as fielding line drives at 3rd base. Continuing to play at this level after his one-time peers Federer and Nadal have retired is remarkable. I hope that Novak decides to win 30 Majors and 110 ATP titles and be World #1 for 500 weeks. Those are all at the 95th percentile of what he could do. After Sunday, he’ll need 7 Majors, 16 ATP titles, and 112 more weeks (2+ years). He’ll never win over the Fedal jerks, but from Sunday going forward there will never be a debate who the GOAT is. It’s Novak Djokovic!

Carlos ran a marathon like a sprint, and his body eventually stopped. Not a single slice, no recovery shots, no tactical play or changing the strategy. Just rushing and running with max intensity. While Djokovic used every bit to catch his breath, he did use every second between the points to calm and lower his blood pressure and to breathe, some pauses whenever he could, he did shorten the points here and there. This is an experience on GS matches. Carlos has so much to learn.

Gill: You clearly severely underestimated Novak’s mental strength. Carlos is an amazing athlete and skill-wise, but mentally he still has a long way to go before he reaches Nadal or Djokovic’s level. Novak and his team knew this going into the match and did everything to keep bombarding Carlos. What a lot of people don’t realize about tennis vs other sports is that with tennis, imagine if you are facing a superior opponent and every point of the match you have to face them which will get to you whereas in baseball, football, etc. when you’re facing a superior oponent, you get a break in between the innings or when they switch the offensive/defensive groups on the field and also you have your teammates “cover your back”. B/c you don’t have this with tennis, after awhile your nerves, stress and anxiety will get to you and will significantly negatively affect your performance. This is exactly what happened to Carlos (as well working too hard in the 1st 2 sets which again was by design by Novak and his team, and the heat).

Folks criticizing Gill for his pick need to cool it. Gill is analyst. His job is to look numbers, data, tactics, and a player's form to evaluate their performance in a match. He cannot quantify the "Supernatural Aura" Novak brings to a High-Stakes BO5 encounter and use to make a prediction. Unfortunately for Alcaraz, that's exactly what happened. Inexplicably, Novak was serving better, hitting his FH harder, returning much deeper, and constantly unsettling CA with net-rushes. In the end, it was too much. Let's not forget, though, Alcaraz showed in Set 2 he can match the greats. Was phenomenal to see. The first great test for Carlitos has ended in defeat, but it is certain this will not be the last. Thoroughly enjoyed the first two sets on my computer here in Paris. Alcaraz clearly had an edge at the start of the 3rd set, I was starting to get worried for Djokovic. I'm happy that Novak will play in the final, he's my man, but this is never the way you want your favorite player to advance to the next round, let alone win a title. Alcaraz is without a doubt a beast, he has already taken the torch from the Big Three as far as I'm concerned, but I told myself when he got the cramp that he is not yet completely in self-possession with being the new sheriff in town, particularly as he was facing the the greatest mental beast that tennis has ever known.

As for the absorption of the cross to cross forehand, Nole showed another technique ... and that is the aikido technique, when he used the opponent's strength as his weakness, that is. he caught all the strength of Alcaraz's formidable forehand while climbing as if with a lasso or some kind of net and used such fast shots of Alcaraz to return fire with fire and even stronger, which further confused Alcaraz and he was not used to it and probably presented him with an enigma and threw him out of comfort zones.

Gill, I know in the pre-match analysis you mentioned how physically developed Alcaraz is and how that has led to much of his early success. I think Novak is in a similar class of freakish physiology. He is not as muscular, well-built, or statuesque as Alcaraz (perhaps even not as mobile), but what he loses in pure power and speed he makes up for with insane natural flexibility and body control. I know you appreciate these factors, but I think other tennis fans sometimes take for granted the role physical health plays when talking about Novak's longevity. Yes, the iron will is there, as is the fire to compete and the experience to take it to the young guns, but it is his health that provides the foundation for his game. On this note, early in his career Novak struggled with cramps and physical problems, much like Alcaraz did today. The Spaniard can look to the Serb as model to follow when planning his future physical development.
