The biggest difference from last year's final was Carlos's aggressive start. Carlos usually starts slow, but this time he cane out of the gate ready to play. His serve was also on. Novak was stunned and he looked flustered. His knee wasn't a factor.

Djokovic after 2010 USO final was like "Nadal is 24, I'm 23. Nadal iis #1, has 9 GS titles, all 4 GS titles, olympic gold, 15:6 record against me... And I have only one GS title which is almost 3 years old, I'm #3 since 3 years, I NEED TO DO SOMETHING!!! And he started to cheat, that's how he improved his stamina like 30% from october 2010 to januar 2011.

Not a good assessment. Alcaraz won because he is the better player, got all the shots in the world, played well during the match, and made Dkokovic uncomfortable from the beginning. Alcaraz's improved shots and style of play had a lot to do why Djokovic was not able to play his game.

It seems you're missing the main point. Novak said his knee injury weren't a factor in his loss to Carlos. He lost to Carlos last year on the same surface and there was no knee injury. He also lost to Sinner at the Australian Open and there was no knee injury. Novak admitted that Carlos and Sinner have significantly improved their games. Novak himself said that the knees have not bothered him in his loss. Novak beat great guys to get to the final. According to Novak, he said that Alcaraz and Sinner have improved significantly and are playing on a whole other level. He has to work to do the same. Give credit where it is due.

1000% agree. Carlos and SInner simply are the ones who were able to get to the goat-level. The entire next gen generation of tsitsipas, zverev etc. were not able to for the entire time. Novak is still in his prime, he would've won every grand slam this year except for RG if sinner and alcaraz did not exist. The only guy who would give him a bit of trouble (albeit only at the ao and uso) would've been medvedev.
@MMacBG
@MMacBG Ай бұрын
You're missing the point, not to mention the entire context. When Novak says that the condition of the knee did not affect the result, it means that he will not "fall into" the journalist's trap, because Novak correctly pointed out that Carlos was half a step better in all aspects of the game. If he pointed out that due to the condition of his knee he could not prepare adequately, anyone could say: "So what were you looking for at Wimbledon?" This is how he transferred all the credit to Carlos, which is absolutely deserved, and he only partially shared the complexity of his own situation with the journalists.
@Charismaniac
@Charismaniac Ай бұрын
In the Wimbledon press and for the Serbian Sport Klub, Djokovic talked about how Sinner's and Alcaraz's quality is currently better than his, given their health, youth, training and passion that they put in but that he also couldn't show up for the first two sets against either of them this year, as much as he tried to summon the energy and pump up the pressure. He also said that trying to get the crowd involved didn't feel right this time because his body just couldn't wake up. He was as flat and cold as back in the semis of the USO 2014 against Nishikori, 2020 FO final against Nadal and 2022 FO semis against Nadal. His body language was completely off since the warm ups. The unforced errors tell their own tale, but his shot selection was horrible today as well. He constantly sent short and easy balls to the forehand of Alcaraz which seemed counterintuitive because it worked even better than his backhand. The only thing working for Djokovic today to some extent was his serve. Everything else he left in the hotel or that house he usually stays in when in London. Alcaraz acknowledged that Djokovic was far from his usual self today and congratulated him for being able to play well enough to at least get to the final, after the surgery last month. You hear this in the post match ceremony and a couple of interviews that followed. Another interesting detail is that until late in the third set, the longest exchange between the two was only 13 shots. Djokovic barely ran to get the ball after a couple of hits which tells us that he wasn't in the right frame of mind. Neither of the two broke a sweat today, which is bizarre for a slam final. Alcaraz said that he was surprised he won so quickly. Alcaraz is already an all time great with astonishing accomplishments for such a young man. There's no doubt he'll win more big titles. He's evolving quicker than anyone else on the tour so he gets all the credit. As a matter of fact, he's the most beloved player today and heavily pushed by the establishment. He is always credited and spoken for, lets not pretend he's being cut short.

Hate that novak doesnt seems focused and carefree the whole match. Like he doesnt care anymore. It feels like he’s just asking for free points. While carlos is working for every point and testing the opponent weakness. Novak isnt hitting as hard as when he was in roland garros last year. Novak isnt trying to get into the opponent head. His return gotten pretty slow this wimbledon. Im really disappointed… as a novak fan. I couldnt watch the match at all knowing he didnt give his best. But credit to carlos for giving his best, not only that but humbling himself saying that he is not a champion until he gets his seat on the BIG3 table. So many players can learn so much from carlos. Not fearing the big3 and taking risk hitting their hardest shots against the top10. I can fairly say that even sinner is not at carlos level yet. Sinner’s trauma of not being able to last late game is still affecting him, while carlos put his losses in the past and goes all out at the present moment. Carlos definitely deserve world no1 this year.

With all due respect, you appraise Novak as if the play of his opponent makes no difference. His serve wasn't so dominant because Carlos had an insanely good return game. Likewise, he didn't have the usual mental dominance because he realized he was up against a better player who had the answer to everything, who was suffocating him with his agressive attacks, and who did not have the nerves he had in their previous Wimbeldon final. For one of the rare times in his career, his opponent had all the answers, while he had none.

In my perception, Novak felt defeated after the game 3:4 in the third set. Alcarez played some amazing short in that game, including a winning forehand from off-court. Novak attempted to play heavier on that 3:4 game, and Alcarez played even better. Novak must have felt helpless, began his serve turn, and missed two shots, one being a comfortable volley, because he was pressured to do exceptionally good. I think he surrendered psychologically and felt defeated. In fact, in the following game, 5:4 Alcarez, Djokovic did not sit down and went immediately to the other side, ready to finish the match.

That's how Novak served against Roger in 2019. In Set 3 Novak did however found a cure and started returning comfortably. I wondered when will Carlos realize this and go down the T. He did towards the end when in trouble.

I have been a big Djokovic fan for years. Djoko will never be as hungry for success as he was a few years ago. He's happy around his family and when he plays with guys he likes (even for him) like Alcaraz or Sinner he doesn't have the fighting spirit he used to have. These guys play with a speed and punch that he can't really play without internal fire. (It's another question of how that pace and punching power will wear down their bodies.) I think it's safe to say the generational shift has happened. Sinner and Alcaraz are playing magic tennis. My next favourite after Djoko will be Sinner, even though Alcaraz is a better tennis player. You don't always have to win. :) , and let's be happy for these two guys.

@@huzcer Obviously Djokovic can still have one or two chances of beating Alcaraz, he is arguably the best player ever and has the titles to prove it, I don’t doubt that. But looking at the bigger picture it’s clear to me that his decline has already started. As I said it’s normal. Our bodies take much longer to recover once we get near 40, and the loss of strength is exponencial. The bottom line is that the drop off is really accentuated and although Djokovic (who is a super athlete) has been able to mask it a bit, he can’t escape time. P.s.: Just out of curiosity, I’ve read an article a few weeks ago (I wish I had saved it) about the drop off in goals from forwards (the football position where physical capabilities are the most differentiating) over 30 in the Premier League, spanning from 1992 to today. It was incredible to see that while the decline was quite progressive and constant up until 34 years old, but from then on it was just a massive drop. It’s clear to me that in professional sports, where the opponents are the “crème de la crème” there’s a point where will alone is not enough.

No need to overthink today's outcome. It's really quite simple. The Alcaraz who played in today's final was not the same Alcaraz that I watched in previous rounds. Nobody - and I mean nobody - could exceed the level of play that I witnessed today. So, there's no need to talk about Djokovic, except to say that Alcaraz is not yet the legend that he (Djokovic) is. And while you can contemplate an historic journey for Alcaraz, it remains to be seen. I never thought I would see what I did today. On the other hand, however, I'm equally amazed with Djokovic's level of play to this very day. I believe it's going to be exceptionally difficult for anyone to mirror Djokovic's legendary career. Only time will tell.

I think the thing with Carlos is, while he definitely wants to win, he also wants to have fun. I think his tennis IQ makes him good at estimating his level of skill versus his opponent, using the first set to relax, feel them out, let himself get carried away, or get bored and lose focus...all the while knowing that he is good enough to come back and win it all. With Novak, I believe Carlos genuinely expected a repeat of last year, and that this would be the match he needed to dial in and give his all - because at the end of the day, he wanted to defend that title at all costs. So he did, he came out guns blazing, thinking Novak would capitalize on any free points that he gives away, and he didn't let him. He showed his true level in this match.

I don’t understand how you don’t see how important a 5-10% drop off in speed/quickness is for Djokovic. Much like Murray, Novak is a counterpuncher. He’s just a much, MUCH better offensive player and has a better serve. Novak can do things like going bigger on serve and trying to end rallies by going for more earlier on in rallies but again that isn’t his game. Also unlike ‘20-‘23 when Novak vultured 8 slams because his biggest completion was Medvedev and Tsitsipas due to the big 3 being injured or retired, Alcaraz and Sinner being teenagers, “Next Gen” (Dimitrov Raonic, Nishikori etc) just not being on that level and the flurry of the guys after that led by Fritz arguably being worse there were scraps all over the place and Novak took advantage. But along with Mother Nature catching up, as soon as players with even remotely comparable talent turned 20-22 then all of a sudden it wasn’t as routine as it was for years.

Few people are talking about , Djokovic was very lucky to even reach this final. Firstly , look at his draw ; barely faced a seeded player until Musetti ( 25th,) - then wham - into the final He was shocked by Alceraz because he was suddenly facing a much much better opponent than he did in previous 5 matches - no surprise Its 3/4 s of the way through the big 4 tournaments - and for the first time since 2010 ish - he has no major. My prediction, he most likely will not win another at this stage of his long long career - father time is fast drawing him from the very top

WTF Novak victories last year should have an asterisk against them given that both Alcaraz and Sinner played the tournament for the first time in their careers. That inexperience of playing deep in a big tournament at the end of the year helped Novak in winning those matches easily. In fact, Alcaraz was in poor form coming into the tournament and for Sinner it was big final at the end of the year and the pressure and inexperience helped Novak.
@davidhunternyc1
@davidhunternyc1 Ай бұрын
*"There's a changing of the guard."* This is my first time saying this and I do not say this flippantly. In a previous post, I said that Djokovic could have already reached 25 major wins before this final. He would've won the 2021 US Open had he controlled his temper and NOT hit the lines judge in the throat with a tennis ball resulting in disqualification. Also, if Djokovic were vaccinated, he would've also won another Australian Open, #11. Let's be clear. _My comment isn't about whether or not Djokovic should've been vaccinated._ I'm simply being factual. Because Djokovic was NOT vaccinated, he was denied entry into the 2022 Australian Open. At this Wimbledon 2024 final, Djokovic was routed by Alcaraz. To be hawkish, Novak Djokovic will never win another Major. His window is closed. Djokovic is tied at 24 Major wins with Margaret Court and he won't reach #25. Djokovic won't tie Federer's 8 Wimbledon titles either. Alcaraz and Sinner are too good and getting stronger. So are other players. Djokovic recently stated that he wanted to beat Federer's 8 Wimbledon titles. This, of course, meant that he would've had to win today's Wimbledon title to tie Federer's wins and then... win one more. It isn't going happen. I, like many of you, wanted to see Djokovic win #25, breaking Margaret Court's 51 year record, and tying Federer with 8 Wimbledon wins. Because I saw Novak's window of opportunity closing during Covid, I implored Novak, on every social media platform I could, to get the jab. Again, _my comment isn't about whether or not Djokovic should've been vaccinated._ Novak is his own person. He made his choice and I respect it but the consequences of his choice is he won't reach #25. Who are any us to say if he thinks it was worth not getting the jab? Some Olympic athletes will dope to win Olympic Gold. Look what Lance Armstrong did to win the Tour de France. Of course, doping and vaccines aren't comparable but they both have benefits and consequences. In time, will Novak look back and wish he had gotten the jab? Outside of his immediate family, I know that Novak cares about winning Majors more than anything else. I venture to say he cares about winning Majors more than being anti-vaxxed. I could be wrong. It's my own unscientific opinion that I wish Novak did get the jab. Yes, it's a trade off but I bet he would be sitting at #25 right now, possibly #26. Obviously, after all is said and done, Novak Djokovic is the GOAT. Congrats to Carlos Alcaraz for his 2024 Wimbledon win. What a phenom. The future of tennis looks bright indeed. Another thought about Alcaraz's potential of someday surpassing Djokovic's 24 Major wins. Djokovic is the only man in history to win more of his Majors past the age of 30 than when he was in his 20s. I doubt that Alcaraz will have Djokovic's kind of success past the age of 30. Alcaraz, like Nadal, is a physical player. Because of Alcaraz's physicality, I foresee injuries preventing him from winning more Majors in his 30s than in his 20s. I believe that Alcaraz can pass Djokovic's 24 Major wins, but most will have to be in his 20s with a few more in his early 30s. Alcaraz will have to win 2 Majors a year before he's 30 to reach Djokovic's 24 Major wins. This isn't easy to do, even for a tennis genius like Alcaraz. Of course, at 30 years old, he should still be at the top of his game and have ample opportunity to win more Majors. I'm rooting for Alcaraz. In the distant future, I wonder what the price of ticket will be if Alcaraz plays for his 25th Major win? _...if we don't blow ourselves up first._

Wow. U nailed it. Summarised mens tennis in a nutshell. Yeah alcaraz is a freak of nature. Once in a life time player. I don't think anyone in their prime looked this menacing as well as subtle at the same time. Federer came close but lacks this brutality. He has nadal physicality, Federer finness and joko will power and consistency ( which may be one area he needs to improve a bit more. Giving away sets to low rank players is an example). He is def set for goat of the future. Messi of tennis. But till then hats off to joko a player of principles and hardwork. He is the goat now.

Great analysis and recap ! Djokovic is definitely not playing his best. Mostly, his confidence is down and to trouble it more, he got few injuries as well. It all started at last year's Davis cup where he lost after having 3 match points against Sinner. That loss really shook him. I feel post that he hasn't performed well at all. He played badly at the AO and throughout this year. I see glimpses of him playing well in certain moments but not consistent enough to win against Sinner/Alcaraz as of now. He needs to improve his attacking game and confidence and also needs to get a new coach. I think Marian Vajda was his best coach and should try to have him or Becker. Alcaraz played a superb match, this is the best he could possibly play. I don't see him playing this well in upcoming finals. Although his Level B is still going to be enough for him to beat other players except Sinner & Djoko. Players like Medvedev, Zverev have all given him tough fight but they are not able to get to the finish line. I would love to see Djokovic more excited and showing positive body language he used to few years back, that is surely lacking apart from his game. Alcaraz is the man to beat for now. Its sad that Sinner couldn't make it to the Semis, I was hoping to see that as it would have been a perfect match and I would have picked Sinner to win. At the Olympics, since its best of 3 sets, anything can happen, as it is clay, i feel Nadal will still have a chance. He played good tennis but was unfortunate to get tied against Zverev in the first round (Fortunate for Zverev as he got a chance to play Nadal again after his own injury the previous year). too much excitement - too early! Federer, Nadal and Djokovic (very soon) are all going to be retired players. Let's see how long the new generation of youngsters (Alkaraz, etc.) is going to last and then pass the judgement. Ciao!

The gods are telling Nole to call it a day. An easy draw for Nole landed him in the finals when had he faced anyone resembling tier 1 he would have lost. He barely got past Popyrin who’s not even tier 2. Sinner is a mess. Illness, cramps, injuries or all the above now at Indian, Monte Carlo, French and now here. Add to this a high maintenance girlfriend herself a choker and you have a kid who doesn’t have one day off to clear his mind. He is going right down the Matteo and Musetti trajectory where there are women and kids to distract at a way too young age. Sinner will be #4 or 5 by the end of AO.

I don't think we should focus on his knee. His knee is fine. Novak had a hard 2024 so far. This is his first slam final. So it's no surprise we didn't see the best Novak yesterday. But I think the commentator said it best when he said: "We might see an upgraded version of Novak himself". And if you look at Alcaraz his skills, I can definitely see he is a better tennis player than Novak if he can be stable in his performance. He was stable in the final for the first time this tournament. He also has the mental capabilities to eclipse a player like Djokovic. Of course, Novak is not in his prime anymore. So we can't judge them prime vs prime.

24 unreachable till tennis comes to an end. Actually game has changed from opposite player against Djokovic he is seeing different ball game from them from previous years player so it takes time to adopt to it for that he has to deal it with his body and playing style takes time at 37 definitely he is guy will adopt present situation best part is he reads the game once he catches it different hope his body support for him. Djokovic rarest being in this world thanq

very interesting -Novak missed a few volleys, I am wondering if that's the mobility or volley ability - but Novak wanted to go out indeed, very clear
@willzsportscards
@willzsportscards Ай бұрын
that's the mobility. Novak doesn't come to net a ton, but when he does... he doesn't dump balls like that into the net. Seen him come in on so many big points over the years...doesn't happen. That's injury and/or age right there.

Re Djokovic, time waits for no sportsman, simple as that. He has had a longer run than any other tennis player in history. But tennis fans want change, Alcaraz and Sinner finally providing it.

Tennis is Tennis… I love Barbora and picked her against Paolinj but Kudermatova was a good pick. Look what Tiafoe did to Carlos…spoiler of a good time Tiafoe like he did during Fed retirement almost beat Carlos lol. You never know
@pauljohnson6019
@pauljohnson6019 Ай бұрын
Fate can decide the whole outcome of a Wimbledon final. If Tiafoe had played better, and capitalised on his opportunity, there would be no Alcaraz, the draw would have been wide open, but I don't see Tiafoe beating a Sinner or Zverev or Fritz, Novak would have had a completely different player in the final, and mentally been at a huge advantage, now Tiafoe lost, Alcaraz started gaining more confidence, match by match, and knew last year he won Djokovic from a near impossible position.

Novak had a lot of unforced errors. He missed almost all of his volleys and, for whatever reason, decided to rush the net a lot more than in the past.

Great point, forgot to meantion that. It seemed that he could not hang with Alcaraz from the back rushed the net. This worked in Cinci last year, but today Novak’s transition volleys were poor possibly due to the knee not being 100%.

Being 2 sets down, even if Djokovic managed to win the third set tie break, he still would have to win the next two sets, and that was highly unlikely given Alcaraz's impressive fifth set record, Djokovic's age and having to play grinding tennis. Also Djokovic came to the net a lot, I think that says a lot, he wanted to shorter the points. But as most people know his net game is simply not as good as other past Wimbledon champions with multiple titles. Djokovic has already overachieved considering his poor season so far in 2024 (by his lofty standards) and that he reached the final just weeks after surgery.

It was a privilege for Sinner and Alcaraz could've played Djoković and even a bit Nadal in 2022 on their high-level, now it's probably over. Alcaraz toyed with Djokovic on grass in Wimbledon final even if Djoković wasn't 100% with his knees screwed I mean never Djoković would lose that. That was a changing moment. I wonder if Djoković will be capable of playing toe-to-toe against Alcaraz again? Only time to speak...

@@IntuitiveTennis Yes. End of previous year obviously had the toll on him. He looks bored to dig deep mentally. He needs Nadal back in action, that will fire up Novak again to battle against Alcaraz and Sinner too. I expect strong Olympics from both, Nadal and Djokovic.
