There is a couple other notes about modern chemistry versus this overall set up. The gaseous SO2 will mostly bubble out of the water, as you said, but a measuarble amount will react with water forming sulfuric acid, which will probably make the surface of the mercury golden/yellowish.

10:10 -- Honestly, that little collection of symbols near what looks to be a serpent's tail reminds me of the catholic mass. It looks like a figure standing next to an altar with a monstrance on it calling down the spirit of Christ -- the P with the line through it (or a P with an X through it) is sometimes used to denote Christ. I think that symbol is trying to refer to transubstantiation of the eucharist. Maybe it's trying to imply that following the instructions on the page will result in a similar change in substance -- turning something into gold.

There's a french translation of some of the Zosimos' texts made by Michelle Mertens, and she says that the title of "Cleopatra's chrysopoeia" might be a copyist error, based on the fact that this exact page comes after a Zosimos' text and that some of the diagrams (specially the stylized ouroboros) correspond with the diagrams found right after Zosimos' texts on other alchemical manuscripts. If that's true, I think it's really sad because that means the chrysopoeia of Cleopatra has not been transmitted to us. By the way, thank you for your amazing content.
