I like your continued interst in making slight modification to make things go smoother cook/bake better. My solution was a little different, I took a piece of alum. flashing, cut it to a size that wnen folded twice it fit on top of the fire grate. This resolved my problem with burnet bisquit/muffin bottoms when using propane or alcohol stoves. (no heat of the top. Take care and know YOU are appreciated. Tom

If you had removed the pan of food, replaced the pot lid, rotated the pot with the rocks in it so that the top would now be radiating the heat that used to be where the rocks were, I would bet that heat things more evenly. Being a cylinder pot, it seems a very easy solution to simply rotate it. However, the rocks might ding up the inside of the pot some if that matters to you.

Don't know if your interested but you can add an internal BBQ thermometer to the Billy Can. I have the same Billy can as this, got it from the Bushcraft Store UK. I drilled out a small hole for the threaded section and used a stainless steel nut to hold it in place. Adds the benefit of seeing the internal Temperature. Works like a charm, and didn't cost a lot to buy currently £6.99. When the pot isn't being used as an oven I have a small stainless steel nut and bolt that fits back into the hole. All the best Mally

it is actually 1.44 inches. ColoradoCamper I'd the study on optimizing the Trangia stove, that Hiram cook mentions. the 0.5 inches make a differance for boils ingredients for time. but for baking the less heat from the 1 inch may work as you want less heat for baking.

I want your setup! I have done this with other (cobbled together) rigs. I usually give the food room so air can circulate and I also insulate the top of the pot so the heat isn't lost. I think a diaper... maybe of carbon felt or something... on top of the Billy Pot would also help get even browning. In all my rigs, I have resorted to insulating the top in some way and it really seems to work fine. Thanks for the walk-through on this!
@fireboxstove4 жыл бұрын
Having heat on top has always been the biggest challenge. I have not tried carbon felt on top but it just might do the trick 👍
@newbievloggerandphotograph24384 жыл бұрын
@@fireboxstove Of course, for open fires (as opposed to more controllable alcohol stoves) you have to put the insulation on the inside unless you have something totally fireproof. Kind of a pain but I have had success in wrapping the insulation in aluminum foil and adhering it to the top of the inside of the pot. Not sure how that would work with your setup but it seems it is a problem that could be solved... or not... ;-)

Hello. Your oven is completely closed. Then moisture that is in the dough cannot evaporate. Ergo will not dry your bread and there is almost no fermentation process. Make dough as dry as possible. do not use bone oil or egg in the dough, only water. I have been baking bread for almost 40 years and I know how to make an oven. That is sometimes quite difficult. But half baked bread will ferment in your stomach. And that is not really healthy. Baking bread in a pan is possible, but the pan must be in an oven. The baking time is then half of a normal baking time. your bread is now lying together. Bake 1 smaller bread once and turn it halfway the baking time. I do that as well. Good luck.
@fireboxstove3 жыл бұрын
The lid is not tight fitting moisture can easily escape.
@BertHeideveld3 жыл бұрын
@@fireboxstove Your oven should never get hotter than 220 Gr / c internally. I don't know if you have a meter that you can put through a hole in the oven. They do exist, so you have a better understanding of what is happening. A nice temperature that I work with is 190 Gr / c with a slightly longer baking time. Always bake your bread for a while with an open lid (in this case). I bake bread every day at home in a pan with a glass lid, which works fine on a low heat. In my opinion you should not eat the bread too fresh, but that is my opinion. I made a Mini oven from canned cans but never attempted to bake it. (Lol) But I will do that tomorrow anyway.

The baking pan is so snug to the sides that you are not able to get a rotating convection going around your baking. Maybe a grill grate That sets the baking pan more in the middle and eliminate the rocks and a baking pan with with straight side that is smaller to allow the convection heat to circulate around the entire baking pan instead of just on the bottom. Just an Idea. Thank you and God bless
