Never seen a Zebra Billy Can before but it does look very interesting for camping. The ZBC is a little to big and heavy for backpacking but car camping would be fine. I think a small bed of coals would work well over a large flaming fire in order to control temperature inside the ZBC. I love how you seem only to be yourself and not acting as many do in front of the camera. Keep the videos coming, thanks Emelie!!

i didn't read all of the comments but when I have baked with mine, I think the biggest trick is building up a bed of coals and then baking so the temperature is more controlled instead of baking over an open flame. Try that. Enjoy your videos.

Great video Emilie, and an almost perfect cake. Almost. That zebra pot can be excellent used as an oven, as you did. However for baking a cake you need a constant temperature of 180 degrees Celsius inside the oven. By putting your oven directly on the fire in your firebox, into the flames, the temp inside the oven will become too high, far over 200 Celsius. It's very hard to maintain a constant temp above a wood fire. When I use an oven above a wood fire I use my Dutch Oven and a tripod, so that I constantly can adapt the height of the oven above the fire. Hot ashes are even better than flames. I simply check the temp by sticking my bare hand just underneath the oven. If I can stand that for one whole second, the temp is alright. Pulling back quicker means too hot, if I can stand it longer it means the temp is too low. When I use my Swedish Army Mess Kit (similar use as Zebra pot) as an oven above the firebox, I prefer using a trangia burner because it provides a (correct) constant temp inside the oven. Perhaps it takes a bit longer to bake but that's fine because it allows the cake to bake well done all over, inside AND outside. HOW long it takes? Don't know. I never use a watch (even don't have one) but my experience (and learned from my grandma) is that as soon as I start smelling what I'm baking, it means it's done and begging me to get it out of the oven. It allows me to do something different until I smell delicious cake. Anyway, I love your experiments and being outdoors. Keep on going and keep on sharing. See ya, Hans

Nice, I don't use one of those collapsible stoves but when doing it over a fire ring - I find that waiting for the fire to burn down to coals and using the coals to bake over works better. I like your Zebra pot, that's a cool bit of kit.

Lovely video; you already started sorting this out. Maybe a tad more butter on the sides, but the main thing was waiting for the fire to burn down to coals. You have a more regulated fire then, and there is less of that heat lapping onto the sides of the container. You knew visually that the sides got hotter than you wanted. A controlled level of heat is you best friend when cooking with wood. All in all, you nailed it. Well done. Its a small set up, but that is a good thing. thanks for sharing your adventures

Another great vid emelie 👍 if you watch some of Steve’s vids on his firebox stove channel, he gives you loads of hints and tips cooking with zebra pots. He’s the one who invented the metal clips you have. He puts stones or ball bearings on the bottom so it heats better. He also has other ways to get the heat from the top as well as the bottom. Keep up the great work Lee

Thanks for sharing. I like to find new ways to cook. I cook for fun but sometimes it is good to know how to cook without electricity. I have gas but in the summer time cooking outside keeps things cooler inside. Learning new ways are fun too. I have found that if separated cooking styles it is easier to regulate the temperature. A few good coals ( glows ) goes a long way. A thermometer in the lid would help at first and some foil to shield the bottom of your cake pan. Great first try and i with take your lessons and use it.
