This pretty sums up my experience, "you get drunk faster, get more drunk, and stay drunk longer after a gastric bypass procedure" even 10 years post-surgery!

Dr. Matthew Weiner Dr., What’s your take on tequila ( not a mixed drink like a margarita), and whiskey with club soda, of course in moderation. Both are non sugary drinks. Are they on or off the ok list?

Very helpful. I've really noticed one drink 'feels ' like 3. I am very mindful nowadays and enjoy one alcoholic drink a day - sipping it slowly. I've always been a fast drinker but I know now I really have to make a drink last a long time. Thank you. Julie in the UK. MGB 2016.

Im 2 years postop... and alcohol has been a key facter un my journey. You can go from 0-100 in literally mins. I dont enjoy alcohol that much anymore because if this. I also find that i gain weight when i drink alcohol. Advise to anyone doing the surgery stay away from alcohol.
@nancydashiell14294 жыл бұрын
I am happy he is educating people on alcohol and it’s effect after the surgery. I personally experienced a long battle with alcohol. I would not wish this for my worst enemy. We simply process alcohol differently and it’s effect hits us quicker and the addiction process happens sooner. It is easy to transfer our addiction to food with drinking. I think counseling and awareness is necessary.

I never heard about this until just today, and My Stars this is so important! I have known 2 people who have had the full Gastric Bypass procedures, and both ended up abusing alcohol. Very sadly one of them passed away due to liver failure, and I have no idea if the GB was ever addressed as a cause. The second person struggles A LOT with alcoholism, and has also had issues now with their liver. The second person I'm much more familiar with, and I likened the process to a Juggernaut. Once that ball started rolling there wasn't any stopping it. They could go for days without, but as soon as alcohol was had...game over. They'd even plan ahead in case anyone tried to stop them, and would hide bottles all over the place so they could keep going. It's really really hard to watch. Many times I or others close to her would try to find out why she kept doing this. Always the same answer..."I don't know, I just like the feeling I guess." If this is a physical issue because of GB then this really needs to be addressed, and it's good that they're finding this link now. I wish they would have know this sooner though.

This information really needs to be stressed before surgery! I had no issues with drinking before. I had ByPass in March 2017. For the past 1 1/2 yrs it is now a problem!! What I was told before surgery was you "need to be careful when drinking"

I know this video is old but I was recently given a dui. Prior to my gastric bypass 17yrs ago l didn't drink. I had cosmetic surgery last year and alchohol use came into play not knowing the alchohol issues. I'm devastated because my attorney has zero knowledge of this

I never had an alcohol problem prior to surgery. I also had to purposely gain weight to get the surgery. I'd drink 1/2 glass of a gross wine at Christmas and that was about it. However, I have a sister that died 2 years ago at 49, of alcoholism after the surgery and I don't want to go there - so I won't!!!. Thank you so much for the info.

I'm curious. Why is red wine a better choice than say vodka with club soda? I was under the impression that red wine has more carbs where vodka for example does not? I like both - even though I am a social drinker, who is going to have VSG surgery on 10/5/2016. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about the optimal things to do. If someone was Pre-diabetic and was making a choice to have a cocktail, I was told by a friend who goes to a diet center to not drink wine, but to drink vodka with club instead? I'm just trying to understand the logic.
@apoundofcure8 жыл бұрын
Red wine has lots of phytonutrients that improve your health and metabolism - weight loss is not strictly a matter of choosing he lowest calorie/carbohydrate option.
@razmatazzsi22936 жыл бұрын
1. This is true. Red wine has more nutritional value than vodka. Down the line, way after surgery and the pouch has healed, any alcohol should be done in moderation, as alcohol impedes mineral absorption. So, the other thing to remember is that you MUST continue your vitamin and most importantly, MINERAL, protocol after surgery to ensure proper health. 2. I did not start drinking red wine until after gastric surgery when I was 34 and was advised that it aids in protein digestion, as HCL production is severely impaired after gastric. So, my first experience with red wine was when I no longer had a filter, and, YES, that was a challenge for me to understand limits. I can honestly say I would have never even thought about red wine had I not experienced so much discomfort in digestion after the surgery. EVERYTHING I ate caused gas-- especially vegetables and even the lean protein I was eating. That was also a life changer. 3. My gastric was prescribed to eradicate diabetes II, which it did the very day of surgery. 8 years after surgery and with a 50lb weight re-gain, I am still diabetes free. The doctor stating at the beginning that alcohol drinking after surgery is a transference of addiction being an incorrect analysis was correct. My issue that put me into a diabetic state my entire life was that my metabolism was extremely SLOW because I hated to eat or I ate once a day when I was finally famished, especially in undergrad. So, there were no transference of addictions. NOW. 4. Lastly, you need to understand yourself spiritually. Because, we as a culture deny our spiritual existence, and that is the reason for a lot of turmoil. Alcohol lowers the internal gates or portals, and allows other "beings" to insert themselves into your auric field, IF you have untreated holes in your auric field due to trauma or parasites in your field that are awaiting the opportunity to jump in and take over. This is why SOME people are more inclined to drink when in a social setting. There are beings that can see your auric field when it is compromised, and can take advantage. I feel this is why alcohol has been such a main part of our society. It allows the movement of hyperdimensional beings without a vessel to hop a ride in yours. If you are sensitive to this and are aware, understand the need to protect your spirit body, as well as your physical body. We co-exist with other beings, just as internally, microflora and parasites sometimes exist within us. Alcoholism is a word that describes a spiritual attachment. One can stop the habit and starve the parasite if it becomes an issue. But, the spirit world is very much a part of an over-consumption of alcohol, drugs, sex, or any other addictive substance. Think about it as something else within you attempting to experience life, so it requires that you do everything times two. But, we never learned about this in general education and was taught to hate parts of a natural cycle that may be healthy to our evolution as a species otherwise.

It’s really important that people learn about “addiction transfer”. It’s also important to understand ‘what’ the substance/behaviour ‘does for them’. That’s more of a Harm Reduction perspective. I think it seems more helpful than just telling people not to do some thing. It gets a bit deeper to emotional underpinnings and seeks solutions vs shaming. eg relieving anxiety, etc

Hello Dr. Weiner, Thank you for your very informative videos. I do however have a question, and haven't found an answer yet. The internist suggested my husband a gastric bypass. As we live in the caribbean, on the beautiful island of Curacao, I am a bit worried if he will be able to drink enough water. The temperature is yearround at lest 86 Fahrenheit, and in august and september it runs into the 90's. Adding all the water, tea and coffee he drinks during 24 hours that will be easily 2 gallons. And that is without the beer. He sweats a lot. How can he prevent himself from dehydrating after surgery? (he is 67 and his weight is 265 lb, he has the whole list of problems: diabetes, heart, bloodpressure, cholesterol, apneu). Regards, Thea, a worried wife.
