Very interesting concept. My only concern (as mentioned at 22:25) is that your performing this to a Western audience where most people have relatively long names anyway. Here in Asia, some of our names derives from Chinese characters and can be quite short. So maybe I rephrase it a little and ask them to think of someone with an English name, surname and Chinese name hence making it longer.
@LloydB2 жыл бұрын
Great input! Thank you for this comment. I'll keep that in mind next time I'm in Asia.

@@LloydB Depending on the country, you could rephrase it differently too. I know people from Thailand, Vietnam and India generally have very long names. Here in Singapore, we are pretty diverse in race so it should not be too difficult to hit the letter quota if we find to right phrasing or the right names.

@ 4:40 for those who doesn't understand what Lloyd is talking about here. I will help a little bit...lol "52 cards represent 52 weeks in a year. Red and Black symbolize night and day. The four suits represent the four seasons; there are 13 cards in a suit to match the number of lunar cycles and 12 court cards that represent the 12 months of the year. If you add up all the symbols in a deck they add up to 365." No disrespect Lloyd I'm just helping out a little bit better I hope you don't get offended you still made it the right way though the way you said it..🙂👍

Love me a psych force (in fact, currently working my way through Pete Turner's Mind Games project and Dani Daortiz's sublime Freedom of Expression). So really want this in my toolkit. I'm just struggling slightly with the explanation. Maybe I missed a vital part of the video. I chose Christina Smith and couldn't figure a corresponding card. It seems like people will need quite a long time to work it out?
@jones16182 жыл бұрын
FYI: To be safe that this works, you ask the spectator to pick someone w/ a first, middle and last name so it is long enough. However, CHRISTINA SMITH works because it is 14 characters. The instructions are to find the card who's name is the same number of letters or as close as possible. Since the longest rank words are THREE, SEVEN, EIGHT and QUEEN (all 5 characters but Lloyd instructed you not to pick THREE, SEVEN or QUEEN, so you would pick EIGHT. The longest suit name is DIAMONDS (8 characters). So, EIGHT DIAMONDS is 13 characters, less than 14 but closest. That's the force. I agree w/ him that maybe it would be good to have a "cheat sheet" for the spectator so it is easier to work out but I might worry that if you listed numbers next to each word, you'd give away the trick. Maybe just the names as a guide is enough.

I hope I understand correctly (probably not 😅) because this is quite nice effect.. therefore I guess in dutch (my native language) this won't work since the card numbers does have other counts than in English even for the names of the figures which are equal length
@repeater642 жыл бұрын
I *think* I’ve figured this one out from the performance. But only because I happen to know the lengths of all the playing cards! (For a spelling trick) Haven’t watched the explanation yet, here is my prediction: Someone’s full name including middle will always be long. The example you gave of joe bloggs was an attempt to distract the spectator from this fact and make it seem like there are loads of possibilities, but you did this after you had already asked them to pick someone’s name including middle. The longest suit is obviously diamonds, and the longest 3 values are queen, seven and eight. And you very cleverly ruled queen and seven out. So in order to get as close to the length of the name as possible there is only one option.
@LloydB2 жыл бұрын
Did you watch the rest to check if you were correct? 😉

@grotgrusson51242 жыл бұрын
I realy loved this, but I dont know if I got this 😄 Lets say I am thinking of my friend Jolam Saxlunder Thats 5 and 9 = 14 Should I now find a card name closest to contain 14 letters in its name? Eg _Spader Åtta_ (Spades 8) = 10 characters. / _Spader elva_ (Spades 11) = 10 characters. Or should it be that Jolam's 5 characters, should give me the number closest to containing 5 letters? (Three) And the last name of nine characters the suit? Spader (6) Hjärter (6) Ruter (5) Klöver (6) Most of our numbers contain three letters: Ett, två, tre... the longest I could think of (that are in the range of how far the deck numbers go) is Fyra (4), Elva (11), Tolv (12) and Tretton (13) so, Jolam Saxlunder would give me the total of 14 characters to work with. This gives me 3 different suits to work with, and left me with the number Tretton. 6+7=13 Am I missing something, or did I understand the math correctly? If I go for Björn Ek I only have 7 letters in total =) I hope I have not offended you in any way, I just like to know if I fully have understod the method.
@natasftw2 жыл бұрын
You're on the right path. You're supposed to include a middle name but that's only to push up the number of characters. You showed Spades 8 was ten characters (it's actually 11. 6 for spades. 5 for 8). the longest value is 5 (three, seven, eight, queen. the remaining values are all 3 or 4 characters). since you couldn't get to the 14 characters, you can't use spades. you can look at hearts but that's also 6 so it won't work. you can look at clubs but that's 5 so it won't work. that pushes you to diamonds. diamonds is 8. 8+5 gives you the 13. it's the closest you're going to get to the 14 (if you eliminate three, seven, and queen). There may be something lost in translation with the suits you're showing. I believe Ruter is diamonds and for you is the shortest instead of the longest. That's likely where you're getting stuck?

Sorry but when you are required to eliminate so many cards from the beginning, that’s a dead giveaway. And to make it even worse at the end, “if the name is too long just choose the card closest to it”, is another dead giveaway. Also the spectator having to count the letters in the name and having to count the letters of the card, makes this very clumsy. I don’t know anyone that wouldn’t catch on very quickly. If you didn’t eliminate so many cards at the beginning and didn’t end with “choose the card closest to it” at the end, it would be a good trick.
@LloydB2 жыл бұрын
I think you missed a key moment in the video. By using short name examples, it shows the spectator that all cards are possible. Thus, proving to them that NO cards are eliminated.
