The core component of this show is that P&T don't *want* to catch people out. They do catch people, all the time, because them's the rules. They're consummate pros, and exceptionally knowledgeable, and if you can't fool them, tough - they're going to say so. They'll settle for "We know how you did it, but it was beautiful to watch" because they have the respect that all craftsmen should have for one another, and find joy in inspecting a near-perfect piece of work. But what they really want is to be amazed - and they don't mind letting it show when it happens.

At some point, probably when the camera wasn't looking, he swapped the deck with a deck that had dirty looking backs on one side and clean on the other, except for the top card. Then to 'change' them he took the top card off and slid it into the deck, when he lays the clean cards out on the table you can see the dirty card mixed in. The whole trick is based on a wonderfully timed slight of hand and forgery (the signature). The switch of the cards for the last part of the trick was done while Alison was signing the card, so in fact the whole time he was playing with different deck of cards (two-sided, one "old", other "new"), which he just rotates for the last part and only leaves and then takes away the first card (the "old"). He tries all the time to hide the other side of the cards, but closer look at 4:37 clearly shows that the cards are two-sided.

Changing the deck is the easy part - he swaps it out near the beginning after presenting the initial deck face up - past that point it's a two sided deck with old backs on one side and new backs on the other, with the original signed card being the only card with a regular face in play. The real trick is at what point did he procure two extra seven of diamonds and when and how exactly did he get them in the box and duplicate the signature on both of them - even though it's obvious they're not the same as the original card, it's still baffling how exactly it's done.

@@pawelbator No need to be cryptic about the "second guy under the table" method or some kind of signature replicator down there. The signatures are proportionally different so there's no transfer going on, and while the second guy method is a possibility, I'm going to say that didn't happen here for the following reason. Rachel Wax's act on the very same show relied on an obviously prepared signature. I believe the producers are assisting some of these magicians with their performances (to get more people on the show, they're really starting to pad it out with repeat performers) and that Alyson has been instructed to do things in particular ways. She signed both objects the exact same way, lengthways across it and in proportion to the dimensions of it. However Simon was given us a fool us trophy a year later (when able to go again to the U.S.) as P&T had made a wrong assumption while on-air, & realised it after the episode was recorded

I don't even think it was the signature that fooled them. That was way too obvious. First counterfeit was semi plausible and could have been missed, but the second one wasn't even close. There was something different in his handling I think they weren't able to figure out. I know I can't, but I'm no magician.
@dazza9122 жыл бұрын
Wow..That trick was beautiful..Smooth and so perfect. The only thing I can think of is that the original card stuck to the new deck card and that's just a simple answer. As fir the rest of the routine the skill level is way way on another level.

Okay, I think most people (including Penn & Teller) noticed that each 7 of Diamonds isn’t the same (Her signature getting bolder and appearing in different spots). The real “Magic” of it, is when he started “his” trick. Changing a whole deck of cards from old to new within a second is quite astonishing. His slight of hand game throughout the whole performance is super impressive. Also, very curious how he got Allison to pick the 7 of Diamonds. Definitely a mind game with that, but curious as to how that worked without any psychical touch. Great trick & magician!

So, most people noticed that the last two signatures are faked (and also different from one another). As it's very unlikely that he's had 104 cards prepared, my best guess is that there's an assistant beneath the table who signed the 2 correct cards and loaded them in the box they handed to Kolos halfway through the trick, or that there's some stamp/ink-transfer tomfoolery going on. 🤔 It's really a bit of a shame that the signatures are so obviously different, the trick is amazing nevertheless but were they more similar it would have been even more effective. 😍 Anyway, the key moments of the trick, if I managed to suss them out correctly: 🕵 2:30 - offscreen deck switch from the normal aged deck to a so-called doubleback deck of cards - where each card is printed with 2 backs, in this case one side looks like an aged back of the card, the other side looks like a brand new back of the card. For the whole rest of the trick, he is using that doubleback deck, even though the reveal comes at the very end. You can confirm it's a doubleback deck for a split second here and there during closeups, at 4:37 for example. 2:40 - quick card switch to keep the signed card at the top of the deck, while he throws a random card in the middle pretending he threw the signed one. 3:06 - he quickly sticks the top card from the deck (the signed card) to the bottom of the box before he says 'allison come can you see it' 3:13 - he flips the box and pulls out the signed card from underneath 3:46 - after he places the card in the middle and starts dropping the new batch of cards from above, you can see a gap forms which stays there even after he 'squares everything up real nice'. I suppose it could be as simple as just a piece of rolled up blue tack or whatever he snuck in, just to keep that separation. At 3:52 you can barely catch he's sneaking the card out, he then cuts the deck and sticks the signed card underneath the fan of cards he makes in his right hand. 4:08 - he grabs the box with his finger beneath the left fan, and drops the signed card which he was holding beneath the right fan. 4:12 - possibly the moment he quickly ditches the box over the edge of the table? bad camera angle to catch it better 🤷 4:15 - the table is conveniently just the right height to hide his hand, which is now grabbing the new box, preloaded with 2 faked signed cards (one aged and one new). At 4:21 you can see the awkward hand position, he's holding and hiding the new box, and at 4:23 he is just revealing it. 4:55 - obvious faked signature is obvious. 5:14 - he flips the deck 180 degrees after tapping the box. So far, all the aged backs were facing up, now the brand new backs are facing up (except the very top card, which is there to hide that fact) 5:22 - just flips the box, nothing special 5:30 - he slips the very top card to the bottom and that's it. He has already flipped the deck 180 degrees 15 seconds earlier so all the other cards are facing the right way and ready to be spread out. You can actually see the aged card that he slipped from the top peeking as the second from the bottom at 5:33 5:42 - this card was also in the box since 4:15 Overall this was one of my favorite tricks on the show, very clever and wonderfully executed. Well done Kolos!! 👏👏👏

It's not unlikely that he had prepared cards at all. There have been plenty of acts on Fool Us that have gone to great lengths to have as many outs as possible, there's no reason it couldn't happen here. Alyson's signature is well known. Unless the performer specifically asks Penn & Teller to come up, they're always going to get Alyson as a participant because there's literally nobody else. There was even another act on the exact same show that used a faked signature of Alyson's that was obviously prepared ahead of time. And it's not ink transfer going on, because the signatures are proportionally different from each other.
@thesammyjenkinsexperience49962 жыл бұрын
Hrmm... Actually... At 2:36. That does seem like he's showing the card and signature to something or someone beneath the table.
@vladimirbmp2 жыл бұрын

Well, the signature on the new card was different on the first sight (thicker stroke, closer the right edge), but obviously it's not that hard to fake Alyson's signature beforehand. The real question is - how was it the 7◇? My best guess is a helper below the table loading him the correct card
@timq62242 жыл бұрын
more likely some kind of transparency. The signature was always the same in style, but the darkness of the stroke and the position on the card kept changing.

Each A/G after grandpa looked different than what Allison signed. Especially the second one had a much thicker marker. But the new card also. Still if you can do this while performing the tricks (sign new cards) it is quite amazing.

I have always wondered something about P&T. I know that they like explaining how older acts or tricks are performed so that it inspires magicians to evolve their acts and not rely on the comfort of what came before. I always wondered what their time frame was before they considered an act or trick old enough to highlight.

compare the signatures with a video editor and you will see they are exactly the same handwriting. They are only different in intensity and position on the card, meaning the trick was done with some kind of transfer tech P&T are not aware of -- thus fooled.
@DDB-np1jp5 ай бұрын
Signature cards are different of course (pause, do a screenshot, and compare with next trick signature and you will see it). But the change of the old cards to the new ones was good. You can still spot an old car or two on the new pile, but the trick was good and I think that is what really fooled them.

The signature moves on each card reveal. When she first signs it, when held sideways she dots the i in her last name just to the left of the top right diamond and on all subsequent cards the dot of the i is in a different spot. Also the size of the signature, the alignment on the card, and how bold the lines are also change.
@999slawter Жыл бұрын
It is obvious if oyu can pause a video, watch it on a big screen etc. Lots of people commented "oh, yea, teh signature". Like it's something really relevant... Interesting that nobody talks about the new deck, because they ahve no idea what happened...
@ravenscail Жыл бұрын
@999slawter I wasn't pausing or inspecting under digital magnification. The copy of her signature is poorly done and I believe it is fairly obvious with some attention to detail. I'm not sure what you are saying about the "new deck". Decking switching is fairly common in card tricks. To clarify, I do like this guy's card trick, but I think it would have been a better trick for me without the sloppy signature copying...that part of the trick was unnecessary.

My theory is that the old deck and the new deck were the same. It was printed with ultraviolet ink. The "old" deck is shown in normal light. When the UV light shines on it, the "aged" parts light up and conceals the aging.

The deck was switched after Alison picked a card. The new deck is double sided, old on one side and new on the other. When he does the transition at the end he quickly flips the deck over.

Not a deck flip, he moved the top card (only old card left) towards the bottom. You can see it second from bottom at 5:34.

In which case, to make it easier and more seamless, he's probably doing both and we're both right. Instead of a quick deck flip, he has already flipped it and has one old card on top (reversed) and he's making a quick pass. Nice.
