The Alden Indy (403 in this case), is an iconic boot that was made popular by Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones. For me personally though, these boots have served as partners in crime through some great adventures. They've held up strong and are most definitely my most complimented shoe. I'm still excited about them 10 years later.

@@dominicscalise It doesn’t matter because why let a company screw you when the people that know leather is letting you know the boots aten’t up to the $700 range standard… I own almost 30 pairs of boots, from Nicks to Whites, Truman, Red Wing & Grant Stone so I know leather quality very well. Don’t do videos to the world if you don’t like someones opinion when is different than yours.

I LOVE my Indy boots. I'm in my 70s and have worn a lot of business shoes, casual shoes and boots throughout my life. A boot is a system. Each part has a function that needs to be understood in context with the other parts in order to achieve the goals of the boot. The Indy boot is an orthopedic boot built on a patented orthopedic last, designed to keep your foot in a healthy anatomical position. It has a wide toe box giving space for bunions or other deformities, and it narrows down at the instep and heel to produce a tall, long and firm heel cup. Other parts of the orthopedic system include the cork midsole, the well designed metal shank, and the Thomas heel. Cork, which seems to be missing from many heavy leather boots, is buoyant, elastic, breathable and water resistant. It is also very durable. A cork footbed molds around your foot to give orthopedic support and comfort. It's one of the reasons Indy boots "break in" in a matter of days or a couple of weeks. And stay comfortable over the life of the boot. The Indy boot metal shank is made of tempered steel, properly contoured and triple ribbed for strength. Too many boot makers use a thick piece of leather or wood for the shank. Simply cannot compete with a properly designed metal shank for arch support and long lasting comfort. The Thomas heel (the curved front of the heel) adds rear and midfoot medial support. Good for any foot, but especially for people with excessively pronated feet. This is why people love their Indy boots. Quick to break in, very supportive regardless of foot issues, and the orthopedic properties force you to walk correctly, making it possible to work all day in them very comfortably. And they are NOT overly heavy. Heavy boots are not good for your ankles, legs and lower back. That's why it's important for any boot maker to achieve the goals of the boot, at the least possible weight. I have arthritis now, and no longer wear any shoes other than my two pair of Indy boots. They reduce significantly the pain in my feet, legs and back. Since I live in Portland, no one cares when I wear them to the Symphony. Alden Indy Boots are better engineered than any other boot. Period.

You have great taste. I find it humorous how some were commenting about "poor quality" about the 403, without ever owning the boot. After trying on so many high end goodyearwelt brands, the 403 is still my favorite. I remember first trying them on years ago and being blown away, quality, comfort, and so versatile. In your Toyoto SUV video you said true luxury is headspace and that's how I feel about these. Cheers!

I purchased a pair of 403’s and absolutely love them. I live in Central Arizona and typically don’t wear them in the Summer but I long for late October when I can pull out the Alden Indy boots and my trusty Barbour jackets - heaven must be like this! Great video.

Very nice video! I ordered my first Alden Indy boots on Saturday. Birthday gift to myself. I’ll be 54 this coming Sunday. I wish I had bought a pair when I was 23 years old. They would have been on many adventures as a result of my time traveling in Asia, across the United States, and the Middle East, when I served in the Marines. No doubt, they would have been rad to take on all those adventures and have some boots that tell a story, but it just sounds like you'll have to bring them along in your future travels :) I actually got my old Indys (shown in this video) fixed, threw commando soles on them, and took them on a motorcycle trip through Southern Mexico. Just bought the black Indy's - tried them on in store and they were miles ahead of any other shoe, let alone boot, I've worn. The fit, comfort and quality was apparent from the second they went on my foot. By far the most expensive pair of footwear I've owned, but I 100% believe in quality over quantity and that I will get years of satisfaction from these.

I bought the #8 shell cordovan version for my first pair. I figured that if I was going to spend 600 bucks on a pair of boots, then why not go 850 and get a true grail. The downside is I’m too chickenshlt to wear them in crappy weather, but I do love looking at my feet when they’re on! Your comment about buying something you’re excited about wearing is dead right. That makes the difference and justifies many of our, eh, less necessary, purchases. :)

I own four pair of Alden Indy's. The 403 is definitely the iconic everyday version, but if you haven't tried a pair of the reverse tobacco chamois with commando soles your missing out on a great winter/wet weather pair of boots. Not at all like suede and they work for casual and many dress occasions.

I have a pair of 405s that I've had for the last 4 years. Brand new. I originally was going to get Thursday Diplomats, but they sold out and changed the style. So I went with Alden for my Indiana Jones cosplay build. Worth every penny. Sure, it's the lighter brown. Like a British Tan kind of pumpkin brown, but I don't care. I love these boots. $600 after taxes at the time. They've been with me almost everywhere. Trekked up and down California, Disneyland, Universal Studios. I wore these overseas to the Philippines. Up and down Manila and Baguio. They've been my main boot to work retail, church, errands, hang outs. I practically lived in these boots since I got them. Only time I didn't wear them much was during the lockdowns. Had to take it to the cobbler 3 times. Twice to reinforce the upper and heel on one boot and once to replace the top lifts one both boots because they were pretty worn. I probably had more miles left on the heels before needing to do so, but I didn't mind. It had enough wear to justify it. Right now I'm currently looking at adding another pair (or two... or three). The Indy in the rusticalf and black Indy have my attention right now. Maybe even the 403 for a darker brown, but I could get another 405 too since the current batch is darker than what I have. The $600-$650 is for sure worth it for good boots that, like you said, can be excited to wear. I was looking at Nick's and White's but - while handsome boots that I'd like to get eventually - they don't charm me like my Alden 405s.

I thought I recognized Gorila Glue on those boots in the pics. When someone brings me footwear for repair and they've used Gorilla Glue it's an automatic $10 upcharge. That stuff is a pain in the ass to remove. I have two pair of Indy's myself and absolutely love them. Yours are looking great!

My first pair of real shoes were the Alden suede chukkas that I bought as an intern during college. A few years later I bought the Indy's. The chukkas are definitely more comfortable and easier to wear than the Indy's.

Love my Alden Indy’s! Have two pairs, one in Chromexcel and another in calf. Take both when traveling to alternate and they’ve held up perfectly… only thing is the tongue on one of my slides, and been thinking of getting it stitched in place. Now thinking of getting a 3rd pair in black, but not a huge fan of the white stitching on the black… wish everything I bought have me this much value.

Isn't it so good?! You're gonna love those boots. I gotchu on Indy care: Shoes trees are a must. Venetian Leather Balm for leather care. Put that on and then you're going to be brushing them with a horsehair brush after to bring the sheen back. Works great. Cheers!

The thing is. Alden Indy will always be around. Most cool Red Wing boots come and go. So I’ll try to collect the ones that are hard to come by first. After that I want a pair of Vibergs and then both Alden Indy boots. In calf and crome excel. I guess Alden Indy are grail boots for many people. Slowly working my way towards them.

The Iron Rangers are too workwear for my style; the Indys have an elegance to them that made them more versatile for how I dress. That said, both are great from a quality and longevity standpoint. I’m a Redwing fan too

Great video of The Alden Boot ;). Just curious which products you might use for maintaining their luster i.e., Saphir or something other or simply nothing and use a horsehair brush and damp cloth like some I've read? I actually purchased mine back in 2020 at a store in Media, PA that was going out of business and I've yet to wear them. I just have a problem, buy things like boots, watches, hats, etc., then fear wearing and damaging them. Crazy I know and hopefully watching this and other videos will give me the motivation finally to start wearing mine. Cheers!

Thank you! You've gotta start wearing them! They only get better. In fact, I wear my original pair more than my new pair. There is something special about well-worn (and banged up) high quality products. I simply use a horse hair brush and venetian shoe cream to keep them in top shape.

I know it’s a very common question and a very tricky one, but, what about sizing? It looks like a wide width on your foot but I know the last is a D width… I have a 9 or 8.5 in most of my boots and a 9.5 in Converse… Would you recommend going for an specific size if I also have a thin ankle and low volume feet?

These things run big for sure, and even the D width is roomy. I am a 9 in nikes, 9 in Jack Purcells, and with these (and all Aldens so far) I'm an 8 with enough room to wear chunky socks.

If you think these are rugged think again, they are a nice casual boot but not rugged . I own a pair in CXL and I like them . I use Venetian shoe cream to polish them, and I use black leather shoe strings from Whites I think they compliment the brown CXL well .

Define rugged. I’ve had my first pair for nearly 15 year. They’ve been in every situation from every kind of weather, 6+ years of daily shop use, venturing different countries, and numerous motorcycle trips (including off-road). Never let me down.

I used to do concrete foundation work out of high school and I did it for 5 years and I’ve also been a heavy equipment technician and I’d be lucky to get 3 months out of those doing foundation work . Something that is rugged can handle that kind of work . Don’t get me wrong it’s very nice foot wear for casual situations but I would never do real work in them and expect them to last doing foundations or climbing all over heavy equipment .

Alden Indy boots are a 300$ boot masquerading as a 600$ boot. Pressed board insole. Cardboard heel counter. Thin chrome tanned leather with a heavy acrylic paint.

Seems like you just watched a Rose Anvil video. To be clear - The leather on the 403s, Chromexcel, is actually fantastic and NOT painted. It’s a dual tannage which gives you the best of both world - patina and durability. That said, there is nothing wrong with a well done chrome-tanned leather; in fact, it’s likely preferred for any hardwearing boot. Regarding build materials to price - Yeah, I probably agree that they are more expensive than they should be, but I’ve owned my first pair for over 10 years now, worn them harder than most people, have had them resoled 3 times, and they will easily do another 10 years. The price tag is definitely a hard pill to swallow, but they've served me super well and they just look so damn good.

I’m very interested in the Indy boot. I just cant figure out if I want the 403 or 405

Go 403s. The 405s have a red hue to them that makes them harder to pull off with certain clothes/in certain situations. 403s in brown chromexel - you can’t go wrong.

Awesome video. I too have watched hours of videos trying to decide on 403 vs 405. I’ve even contacted Alden, shoeMart and Horween about the best leather/color for me. Even though everyone say the 405 is the “true Indy,” I personally like the looks of the 403!! Thank you for the video that helped me decide.

Dang you put your self in a corner with that "last ware" of the old pare. they would be perfect for a full resole to lug comando sole so they serve the use of boots you ware where you wouldn't ware Aldens usually. Tat would be kind of cool to have Aldens for Alden situations and Aldens for tough stuff. However if you do that you are killing the story of last ride to the sunset. Though life

Haha! I'm not married to the story of a final wear - I just used a shit-ton of Gorilla Glue and thought I ruined them. I'm gonna have to reach out to Alden to see if I can revive them. I'd love that!

@@dominicscalise You should! Bring ‘em back. They have such a great story. There are quite a few cobblers out here on YT as well who do good work. Might make for some good content for your channel. There’s a huge audience for shoe restoration believe it or not. You’re definitely onto something with your style and content.

Those are also solid boots. The Indys keep that somewhat elevated feeling because of their sleek silhouette, but they feel a bit less dressy after you put them through the ringer.

I just got mine yesterday. $685. I like them but after watching Rose Anvil video of them being dissected I know they are not the Highest quality.

That's so overblown. I've owned my original pair for a decade and I guarantee I've worn them harder than 99% of people. I've resoled them 3 times and they've held up like champs. They easily have another decade of wear in them. I found a cobbler to take on the pair that I messed up with Gorilla Glue. I had him slap combat soles on them, and I took them with me on a motorcycle trip through Southern Mexico. Great boots.

Wow, this video didn't age well...get a better indy boot in the Parkhurst Niagara mahogany with a commando sole. It actually has real leather in the heel and soles instead of cardboard. Sad, alden used to have real leather 35 years ago when Indiana Jones movies hit the theaters. Then they swapped in inferior parts.

I find comments like this so silly. All you guys come in after gulping down Rose Anvil videos to tell me that the boot I’ve worn hard for a decade is not long-lasting. I’ve worn these harder than 99% of people, have had them resoled 3 times at this point, and they’ll easily last another decade. I still wear my original pair more than my new pair. Thanks for the knock-off suggestion. I’m not in the market.

@@dominicscalise I kinda doubt these are hard wearing boots, cardboard doesn't hold up that well when put under stressful situations. I asked my feet the same thing and they didn’t care. No other boot is this comfortable. Pricing is insane though (and gone up since your comment).
