Phil you have taken a piece of what is mostly used for firewood and turned it into a beautiful bowl. My son has 42 acres and most is filled with Alder. I loved that view of the square carbide cutting to top. I know what you mean about the diamond point tool. I have one from a set of Craftsman turning tools I bought years ago. And at work we made diamond point tools made from Stellite. I still use the big one I have. The finish turned out really nice and I like the finishing compound you used. I just used some EEE stuff that came along with a lathe I bought a number of years ago. I used it over a finished lacquer turning that I am about to upload. It was amazing. And I love bug holes and knot holes. I think that texture on the top edge really topped the whole thing off. What a perfect way to use a gift from your wife. Bless her Take care my friend, Gary
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Gary! I need to come up with a good way to sharpen that diamond point. I've just been honing it on a diamond card but I think it's overdue for a grinding. I'm interested in the EEE stuff. I was of the impression it was for smaller things like pens and stuff. So, you used it on a large bowl? No issues? If we didn't have bugs and knots, where would we be? LOL! I do like that texture, too, and the tool is really easy to use. It's just hard to use it on my typical stuff, like you turn. Thank you for thinking of Edna, Gary, I appreciate it! Phil
@ThePapa19475 жыл бұрын
Phil my diamond point is just HSS and I grind it like a scraper which is what it is. Not sure what yours is made of. Yes I used it on the Dizzy bowl I posted this morning. The can says on bare wood But also for a French polish. And it worked great on the lacquer finish. Check it out when you get a chance and no bug holes! You both have been on my mind my friend. Gary

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Not sure you ever get your hands on any, but i'd to see your take on a plywood bowl
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
@@martkt10 Waaaay back in the olden days, I turned two weed pots from plywood. I really liked the way they turned out. Exposing the edges at angles like you get when you are making something round really makes the plywood stand out. But, over the years, the glue, I guess, allowed the wood to move a little and now you can feel the edges of the glued up layers. Too much work for a failure like that. They still look good as long as you don't touch them! LOL!

Hey Phil, Nice wood very nice creation. I've noticed in the recent past you are turning a lot faster RPM, this seems to work pretty well for ya. My JET wants to dance with the oddball stuff I turn. Maybe it would be better to cut them rounder to begin with. You've been a good inspiration. I'll try to Turn it Up, slow increments. You seem to get far better cuts on yours. Thanks for your help.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, Don! I just turn fast when the piece allows it, Don. Most of what I turn, natural and live edge stuff, will not allow high speeds. My jet gets to vibrating as well when something is off balance. Happens all the time. It is fun to turn fast when the occasion arises, though. You can get so much done in a hurry! Yes, you will get a cleaner cut with higher speeds but only if there's little to no vibration. Phil

Howdy Phil Always like it when you turn Alder ....That James Stewart is nice ....Do you think it is like Yorkshire Grit paste ?...When you applied the feed and wax finish , it looked very shiny ....would like to see another Alder bowl comparison . That knurling tool does not have to be on center when facing ....you could put it up at 45 degrees as long you have the tool at the 45 ....if you use the tool on turning it is easier to be on center , more so perpendicular .....you can also be at 45 as long the tool is perpendicular. WOW the bottom is a little thin ..glad it did not break off when you taking the tenet off . I think I would have sanded off that little piece .....with my luck it would have broke ........look your video when it came off .you can see the center bend in .....I skip a breath when it happened ....thought you were going to have a strainer . Did you get that knurling tool on Amazon ? What is that piece under the bowl when you were turning to show ? is it another piece of Alder ?
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
It is similar to YG, Bruce, but YG requires you to use it over sanding sealer. James said use it on bare wood so I did and found it works great! Thanks for the tips on the texture tool! My wife bought it for me from Craft Supplies but I have seen them on Amazon. Yeah, it's thin, no doubt about it. I saw the flex in it, too. I gotta be more careful! I think that wood under the rotating piece is Oak. Thanks, Bruce! Phil

I love what you do. A question for you from a complete and utter novice: why do you--and other wood masters--finish the outside completely, including sanding and waxing before you start on the inside? If it's a silly question, please bear with me!
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Not a silly question, Andrew and I'm glad you asked. In watching others and listening to their explanation, and of course, through experience, I've found that you never want to touch the outside of the piece after it's turned around. The reason is, no matter how hard you try or how careful you are, you will never get it mounted on center, again. It will be off, no matter how slight, and touching again will alter the outside. Once in awhile, you are left no choice but to do that but I try to avoid it at all costs. It just makes more work and results in frustration. Thank you for watching and commenting, much appreciated! Phil

Nice to see you back on the tools Phil its good therapy. I've tried Howard feed and wax but cant get the result you do.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Well, I'm sorry to hear that, John. Are you sanding to 400 grit or better? Then apply liberally, rub in well, let dry about 20 minutes then buff. Sometimes I think climate has a lot to do with how finishes turn out. Maybe it's really hot or really cold where you are? Thank you for watching and commenting, John, much appreciated! Phil

Thank you, Brian. No link. As far as I know, James doesn't sell it. He just shared some he had made. Phil

Have you made a video of finishes you use.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
I have not made a video like that, Coben. Lately I've been using the Howard Feed & Wax because in dries quickly in these cold winter months. I will probably be using shellac based sanding sealer and finishing with shellac, soon. Phil

Another great job "in the books"! What pens do you use Phil? I use a Sharpie, but Chestnut friction polish makes it run.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I use an Ultra Fine Point Sharpie. Yes, many finishes will wipe out the signature. I've found that wipe on poly won't, but I hardly ever use that. I just apply paste wax over the signature and that seems to work, fine. Phil

Did you find out if we can order the James Stewart paste? Alder is usually pretty plain, but you did a great finish and the bowl is a winner! I'm going to try alder again and see what comes out.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
I did ask James, Lloyd, but apparently he only makes it for himself and wanted to share some with me. Alder has been a good turning wood for me and is commonly available in my area. Thank you! Phil

Hi Russell. Well, yes, I guess there is. For the past few months, with my wife being sick, I just didn't have the time or the will to post anywhere but here, on KZbin. But you're right, I need to get back at it and get that page caught up. Thanks for the reminder! Phil
