Trains and a few buses at Aldgate Underground station London in the early 1990's.
Metropolitan Main Line A & Circle Line C stock trains are seen at the station plus District Line D78 stock trains are seen passing by whilst travelling between Aldgate East and Tower Hill stations.
The C stock views include the use of "selective close", a feature which closes 3 of the 4 pairs of doors per car. The idea is that in winter it reduces the loss of heat, so should make the train a little warmer when it is stopped at stations (with open doors) for a few minutes. I am not sure that it helps a lot, but maybe it is of some benefit.
Also seen are many views of the station, 'next train' passenger information displays, etc. Some of the footage of the ticket gate line was taken from outside the station.
Although primarily about trains the first few minutes of this film also shows several buses at Minories bus station and an unidentified former Green Line RMC (Routemaster Coach) on Central Area red bus route No.X15.

@@robertfeld5829 the 1972mk2 with a few ex Northern line 1972mk1 trains and the 1973 stock still operate on the Bakerloo and Piccadilly lines. Maintenance and operational costs are going up all the time as these trains get older. Parts for older stock are hard to find these days.

The Hammersmith and city line was shown as a separate line from 1990. Before that it was shown as part of the metropolitan line so if the Hammersmith and city line isn’t shown here separately it should give some idea of the date of the video. Hope this helps!! Great video!! I love the old videos showing our social history!!

I remember Aldgate and Aldgate Station & Bus Terminus very well. I used to go to school at Sir John Cass on Dukes Place from 1948-1953. I lived on Cambridge Heath Road above the Pie 'n' Mash Shop that my parent ran at Mile End Gate. I remember the cafes and in particular J. Lyons, at the right of the entrance and also the other shops across the road. I used to take the 653 Trolleybus to Aldgate Terminus - the fare cost 1 old penny for kids and 2 old pennies for adults! The Bus Terminus was a Railway Goods Depot during the war and my mother was stationed here - she would take a couple of huge Belgian horses out with a cart and develop and collect goods in the Docks and City until 1945. I remember the Terminus - it was filled with Trolleybuses that went to Tottenham Court Road via Hackney, Manor Park, Finsbury Park and Holloway (653 - now 253 and another number) and also to Ilford (661?) and Barking (567) via the Commercial Road. When I left Sir John Cass, I went to school in Bunhill Fields and often took the Underground to Aldgate from Moorgate. We used to wait to get the train that consisted of coach with compartments which were pulled by those locomotives with names of past famous Britons (e.g. John Milton,Oliver Goldsmith) - we would ride the train to Aldgate and then return to Liverpool Street where I took the Central Line. We enjoyed this ride as we had the compartment to ourselves and so we could smoke and sing loud and rude songs without anyone bothering us (we were eleven years old remember!). Aldgate was a wonderful place - lots of history, old and new - the markets were great - Wentworth Street was a great joy with wonderful foods. Gardner's Corner was a nightmare and despite the demolition of the Department Store and the re-routing of the traffic, it is still a nightmare!!!! If you enjoyed what I have written or even if you are amused by it,check out my websites where more plus photographs may be found: eastend-memories.org and stories-of-london.org - the sites are full of history and personal memories put together in, what I hope is, an interesting manner. Cheers.

Earliest memories are around 1959/1960/1961 seeing trolleybuses at the London Transport Green Line and Trolleybus Station as was then, would come up from Brentwood in the 721 Green Line coach, a green RT, there is still a trolleybus traction standard in the station which had attached span wires for the pantograph for the trolleys.

Wow, never knew RMCs were still in operation in 1990. We saw loads of RMs and RMLs on routes in Croydon (notably the 68 and 159) when I was growing up in the 80s but I never saw a folding back door.

thank you for the video! It is very detailed and really put a lot of effort on filming. I like those classic LU stock which runs with DC motors, really like to see the old days of LU. And thx to London Underground that share its technologies and experience to the MTR in the 1970's, helped us to create a successful, efficient and reliable mass transit system in Hong Kong...I've heard that in the early years, some operation handbook of the HK MTR are referenced from the ATO-equipped Victoria Line.

I've never thought of things that way, because the Met and District did share metals over the Circle Line. Indeed, the Met built the section around west London as far as South Kensington (which explains the former 4 track section of track at South Ken & Gloucester Rd) and for many years there was a law requiring them to jointly operate the Circle Line as a proper circle (not just Moorgate - Mansion House via west London). Alas the LPTB quietly got this legal requirement in the 1930's.

I did consider filming 2013 footage but since this film is already 14 minutes long so decided that it should be solely historical. Analytical statistics show that people dont like and dont watch very long films. However a contrasts version may yet be made. I would need to time my filming carefully, as at present there are barely half a dozen S stock workings on the District Line which pass by this station.

I think the Metropolitan Railway would cringe at being seen as a tube train service - it always saw itself as more like a main line railway whose route network included some subsurface sections of railway which were built as 'cut and cover' tunnels. After all, it ran goods trains, express trains, commuter trains, its trains offered both 1st and 3rd class travel, its jointly operated services included hauling Great Western Railway trains over its metals (the GWR City Stock between Paddington and Aldgate) and offering passengers freshly cooked light refreshments in luxurious Pullman carriages (as usual a supplementary fare had to be paid to travel in a Pullman carriage).
