Aldi just started stocking a range of own-brand Ferrex cordless hobby tools for £14.99 each and in this video I'll be taking a look at the glue gun, rotary tool and soldering iron and giving you my opinion on how useful they might be as part of a modder's toolkit.

Can't wait for the update on the soldering iron once you tried the alternative tips on it. Saw it reduced to £9.99 at my local aldi and was tempted

Oh really? I might buy a second one. I've actually ended up using it quite often, the convenience of it being cordless is very handy.

Cheers for this video, picked up the rotary tool at my local Aldi thinking I'd only use it once a year, but so far used it multiple times for home DIY jobs. Only gripe is the cutting disk tool arm broke pretty quickly cutting thick plastic, but it's otherwise a great bit of kit.

Yeah the bits are usually the letdown but it's compatible with Dremel parts which is good

Thanks for the tip off, picked up the cordless rotary tool today. I've got a corded Dremel which is great, but the cord is a pain particularly for detailed work, which is mostly what you do with a dremel. I've already tried it out fettling my portable raspberry pi dirtywave m8 project and it works great. I'll still keep the corded Dremel as that has a lot more torque and for some stuff you need that, but for 90% off the stuff i do the Aldi cordless will be fine I reckon.

That's exactly how I feel about this one. The corded one has way more power but for delicate hobby work this is great

Soldering iron is made by Positec who also make Worx tools and some other brands. So not terrible device. I've only used it to weld plastic but it worked fine although the hot end only stays hot while you touch a pad to save battery.

I'd been looking at the soldering iron for a few weeks not at £14.99 as it would be handier than my corded iron but never bothered. However, I've just picked up the soldering iron being sold off at my local Aldi for £4.99 - Can't knock that.

That's an absolute bargain for a fiver! It's a way better piece of kit than I'd anticipated, very handy to have around. I'd recommend the sponge holder if you have access to a 3D printer or know anyone who has one. Keeps the sponge nice and damp when not in use, and stable when in use.

It looks like the rotary tool also goes by the name of the "Huepar RT4 Apex", and I see there's another brand Hardell with what looks like the exact same unit you have (?). Both are listed on Amazon. The Huepar one has kind of ugly colours, but it's currently 'on sale' for £15. Do you think it's worth grabbing, or should I look at getting something more powerful if I don't already own a rotary tool? I know Lidl also sell some for around £2ish that have decent ratings.

I've found this rotary tool to be great for my needs. Cordless makes it so much easier to use than my corded Dremel

Since when did Aldi have things like craft tools 😂 I swear every time I’ve been there there’s never been any, even though I’ve never looked for them

The thing with Aldi is that it's so random. They'll have stuff one week and not the next. It's not even just stuff like this, it's the same with their food. But I go there every week so I do enjoy going to the middle bit and seeing what's there

Soldering iron any good for analog replacement? I got helping hands, but my 30w is dirt cheap, I don't wish to part with much cash as I fear my skill set could prove any upgrade iron would be a waste of cash. I know practice etc but I am too old, to ill and to skint to really invest for a few odd jobs.
@JoeBleeps

For the money, it's a great little iron and I've used it on a number of occasions. It's lacking finesse when it comes to finer detail solder work though.

@@facelessvaper removing smd pots is tricky, a hot air gun is good or any soldering iron used with a good solder sucker is also an option

I got the rotary tool and and the soldering iron. I was looking at the cheap Butane ones but this is much more suitable. They’re a godsend for the occasional usage jobs I need them for in the van on the road away from mains power.
@JoeBleeps
@JoeBleeps 8 ай бұрын
Yeah this is absolutely what they are perfect for. I have a butane soldering iron and it's just a messy process and the heating and cooling is less efficient. This is just so straightforward, definitely handy for jobs away from a plug socket such as garden lighting etc
