Living in a big city in Canada, but not the most expensive by far, here’s what some of our regular prices currently look like (I’ve seen them come down lately): $7 gallon of milk, $9/lb chicken, $6 butter, $4 12 eggs. Studies estimate it costs $1200+ to feed a family of 4. I used to spend 300-450 per month to feed my family, now closer to 500-600 but i know i’m in the minority. I hear people spending a lot more. I now buy a lot of clearance foods at the same price as what regular prices used to be!

Actually I think it's worse, as they've added shrinkflation to the inflation. A lot of the "same" products are coming in smaller packages.

It’s gotten to the point where I say “oh well, it’s just the way things are now.” I get what I can or substitute somethings for others or do without. As long as price gouging is not addressed or regulated, we’re going to be stuck. This has been eyeopening, Jia. Thanks for doing this.

Aldi has become the same price in my area as Kroger or Meijer (I’m in Illinois and I think Meijer is only in the Midwest.) I don’t feel like I’m saving as much at Aldi anymore. Plus I can use coupons at other stores. The taxes here are ridiculously high, so it really doesn’t matter where I shop. I used to enjoy grocery shopping, but now it’s a little depressing lol.

I love how you said they are gaslighting us into thinking is only 7% because we all KNOW its a lie. You literally don't even need to do side by sides. When a person who has been shopping for the family for years was spending $75- $100 per week for a family of 4 and now Im spending $200 or more! Yeah the math isn't mathing. Most people wouldn't even bat an eye at a 7% increase! What we are seeing is an increase of 40%-100% and that's why we FEEL it so much!

I love the idea of bringing this up when speaking about raises at work each August (the last 2 years)! I know our labor rates have increased at work, but was told not every employee got a raise last April, but some employees also got a raise outside of the magical 'April' time frame. When we are told that's only when raises are considered. And knowing we were very profitable. Makes you want to burn the measly $1.20/HR raise I received. Not to be ungrateful, but us regular folks at work are struggling. But if you are an exec or owner, they ain't hurting! We kindly got a Christmas bonus. After taxes mine was $250 and the execs got $10k each!!! 😳 Not that everyone doesn't work hard for the money. But it gets frustrating to work hard and not be rewarded. Mine as well start looking for a new job and keep options open.

Hi Jia - Thank you for all of your awesome content - I live in Adelaide Australia - here are some of the approximate percentage rises - the supermarkets here are being investigated by the government, some of them are posting billion dollar profits every year and many Australians cannot afford the cost of living - The rises I have noticed are approximately as below: Olive Oils approx 40% in supermarkets, although in my local fruit store, where they make their own, the price is the same as 2020. Processed lunch meats 20% Vegetables 10-15% Berries, depending on the week anywhere from 25-40%, Greek Yogurt 30% Water 15% Steak and chicken (both raw) 25% seafood (raw) 40% Cheese (including mozzarella, cheddar, Feta & goat) - Thanks again and take care, Juliana

But I think that's been for every year to year comparison, no? With the first year being over 9% - so something like 30% in the four years? And each year that percentage is on top of the new higher number, so really over 30%. They just say it in a much calmer way, but when it was approximately 2% annually pre-pandemic, this is hitting hard. One chart I reviewed totaled 18.3% from 2020-23 what would have previously only averaged 8%, but that's overall everything, not just food. I still think that reporting is low. The biggest two indicators in my area is the increase in food and the increases in rents. Well into the high 20s lower 30s for both in just four years.

I live in central Europe and our Aldi prices are similar I would say. Some products are segnificantly more expensive here (avocados) some a little cheaper but that's alwas been like this. Recently prices are coming down again but nowhere near pre pandemic. The war in Ukraine also had a big impact on food prices. I also heard that discounters had to raise their prices more then name brands bc they have less leeway in pricing but I also feel like they are dropping them more again now. There are definetly a lot of people struggling and as a student I feel it too.

Thank you for sharing your cost comparison. I have really felt that Aldi has increased a great deal! I do wait until they have the family pack of meat when it is on sale and stock up and freeze it. I like it because each one is more than a pound (like 1.3 pounds or so) and I that goes farther. All cookies, chips and crackers are much higher. I am ordering seeds this week and we are doing raised bed gardens. We grew up growing our own food, canning and freezing etc. so we are going back to that lifestyle.

I’m in Virginia and prices seem about the same. I have also noticed items having slightly decreased in content and still a price increase. Unfortunately as long as we find a way to pay these prices and they know we have to I don’t see them really reaching pre-pandemic pricing. Sad very sad every time go to store seems like something, if not majority, has increased.

And I didn't even mention the Shrinkflation going on. That might be harder to do but it's another video idea if you'd consider it. What I mean by shrinkflation is that not only are these stores increasing the prices, but they are also reducing the size of the product itself. Good ol' Betty Crocker brownie mix used to be 18.3 oz or 519grams; now it is higher in price AND you are only getting 16.3oz or 462grams of product. Many, MANY brands are doing this.
@yumyum2158 ай бұрын

@yvonnepalmquist86768 ай бұрын
I have noticed biggest increases on meats, sugar luxuries/snacks, and staples/non processed foods (flour, beans, oats, canned/frozen vegetables, etc.) - with the staples almost doubled, so the cheaper you ate before, the harder you've been hit. If you were struggling before, you're really struggling now. I too, am in the SE. We eat meat less often, and have cut our luxury items down to probably about half or more of what we used to do, and we're still probably spending 20-30% more with these cuts.

I think you are missing the point. Inflation is only accounting for 7% of the increase. The rest is straight up corporate greed. The number you really should be looking at is the CPI. Not to mention inflation isn’t really about prices it’s about the availability of money in the economy. Now I know the media always centers the discussion around inflation using consumable goods like food but that’s because that is where most people feel it. It’s the shareholders. That is who these profits benefit. Profits over people.

I've found that Target is the only store that hasn't completely hiked up grocery prices. I'm paying on average a 40% increase from where I moved from and a 100% increase from a lot of the US. We are spending about $1,300 a month for 2 adults and 2 small kids for groceries. I dont even live in a remote part where groceries are easily double in those places. It's insanity to live middle class as we still feel poor.

They just raised prices again. Frozen orange juice used to be 99 cents and now it is $2.50. Just saw that ten other day. The cans of crescent rolls are almost $2 me th y definitely were less than $1. I saw other dollar items double. Some items went down but Aldi also will raise items... And then lower them and call it a sale even though it so what the regular price was. Or they raise prices to off set the prices they lowered. Chips is another thing that more than doubled. But still cheaper than other stores even with the crazy price raising since other stores also have higher prices except for the sale items. I definitely watch prices Makes me sick how high everything got the past year or two. And I can't even imagine what the people who don't look at prices groceries bills look like.

It’s called inflation. It effects everything. It’s not just going to CEOs - expenses go up for the farmers/growers/suppliers - transportation, everyone along the supply chain, salaries for all employees. Some states have passed laws guaranteeing $15 minimum wages, prices go up if you have to pay employees more. Everything it takes to get it into the store is more expensive. It hits that bottom line 🤷♂️ And we pay the price. You can’t stop eating. It came faster at us because of the pandemic.
@Iluvchknz8 ай бұрын
Except the food price increases are directly the result of corporate greed and to a much lesser extent about what you outlined. Sure the inputs have gone up but at the height of all the inflation stories it was reported regularly that on investor calls CEOS were bragging that because of the current conditions they had a blank check to raise prices and that’s what they did. These companies were making good profits before the pandemic and record ones during and since. I also take issue with the notion that raising wages even to a $15 minimum is a reason! Imagine being invested in a video talking about the increased cost of food and then thinking that people making more money yes doing a job so they can afford to buy food is the reason. Make that make sense. Stop believing the propaganda! What we are experiencing is good old corporate greed. They know how economics work and until the market can’t bear it anymore they will hedge their bets and keep increasing the prices.
@susiecredeur69698 ай бұрын
Then stop eating. The farmers in France, Netherlands, Canada can’t all be wrong. They are being shut out because of the governments regulations, not corporate greed. I stand with American farmers and all Farmers Across the World. Lucky to live where we can support our state farmers.

😂😂😂😂 except the crap you are buying is produced and sold by private multinational companies. Why must everyone think it’s the government’s fault?? You are blaming the wrong entity. IT IS CORPORATE AMERICA. CORPORATE AMERICA IS GREEDY and raising the prices of food. If our government is to blame for anything it’s they have allowed near monopolies in the food production industry of which there is only 4 major players. They have also allowed a near monopoly in the grocery store industry. That is where the government had failed. Monopolies or near monopolies are bad for consumers. It limits choice, almost guarantees higher prices and lower wages for the employees. It’s laughable to think that corporate America is doing anything to serve the government especially in terms taxes.
