I agree with Ann. I would serve with some cranberry sauce on the side. No way would I pay for the greggs one. Not when your trying to get value for money and too much difference in taste. I only have a lidl near me but def going to make the trip to Aldis as they generally get very good reviews.

Watched a programme on TV last year where a factory made Christmas cakes, everything was done the same all the way through the mixing/baking process, the only difference was at the end of the production line where M&S/Aldi/Waitrose/Sainsbury's just had a different icing decoration on the top of the same cake, a real eye opener.

@@BaldFoodieGuy So whether you bought the cheap or dear one, it all tasted the same? Make your own - or get someone you know to make one - or go to an actual bakery - local ones are usually the best - although Gregg’s - despite being a national chain - bake a lot of their produce in each branch - why would anyone want to eat production line produce that has come from miles away and may not necessarily be fresh, when you can get it baked in the shop - might have to wait while it cooks - so, bosses - don’t put time caps on employees’ journeys to bakers’ shops - not if you want your sausage roll hot!

It is Iceland who charge the price, not Greggs. Iceland are no longer the 'budget' friendly store they used to be, everything is way overpriced. We generally find with a lot of 'festive' products, the dominating flavour is sage and onion stuffing. I'm guessing it's because it is a cheap filler but the taste isn't for me. Just salty stuffing and not a lot else. A brie and cranberry bake would be nice

I suppose with Iceland they will put a mark up on to cover transportation, staff and overheads. Maybe it's all relative to what Greggs charge them. The beauty of Aldi is they have very low overheads, fewer staff, no fancy displays, limited range and very few 'named' brands. They pass the savings onto us 🥳

Thanks Gareth for trying these, so I don't have to. I have given a like for the good no nonsense presentation. Due to the similarity between these two products I suspect they are made by the same company. The Aldi one being last years production sold off cheap but being limited in quantity, so get it while you can. Frozen food can be kept for years and still be safe to eat but it does degrade in quality over time. One of the noticeable changes is that it dries out (water can still evaporate when frozen). A lot of the frozen food suppliers will be trying to cut down on the amount of stock they store frozen because of the dramatic rise in energy costs. So we can expect a few frozen food bargains in the future.

I’ve noticed with Iceland that they have taken advantage of high inflation and added some on for themselves. They masquerade as friend of the shopper but they’re not. The head of Iceland is on The Today programme every chance he gets telling us all the great things Iceland are doing to help people through the cost of living crisis . Some of the items have increased by 30-40% in a year. For example. A pack of 8 Greggs Sausage Rolls. Last year were £3.75. Now they’re a fiver. Iceland is dearer than Sainsbury’s and that’s saying something. I’m well aware you can’t get Greggs products in Sainsbury. I’m talking generally.

Most folk in the Furness area will remember Birketts. Greggs bought them out back in the late 90s leaving the Birkett family with just the award winning Tebay Services just off the M6. The still sold Birketts products made in Penrith but slowly gave way to their own suppliers. A real shame as Birketts Cheese & Onion slices and also the Elephants Foot (Coffee Puff) were outstanding. I tried both Greggs versions and they were dreadful. Powdered cheese in the pasties and shoe leather "Choux" in the coffee puffs (Along with the 33% reduction in size) Starting to look like Greggs is now more commercial than Aldi with their products. Nice find Gareth!

There is a good chance they are made in the same factory. Maybe the difference was down to batch inconsistencies. As Saddaddrummer mentioned below, there are a lot of original products, with different brand names. The source of fruit and veg are generally the same also. Hi gaz , we've watched this video also the heinz v Bramwells chicken vegetable soup . I have tried all three of the soups from aldi . Chicken and veg Beef and veg And vegetable soup. They are all outstanding , heinz should be worried and looking over their shoulders . On a personal note we used to shop in various shops Inc lidls , we have gone over to aldi as their quality is spanking lidls bottom so to speak. I know the bigger super markets are set within the market and aldi and lidls are a fair way behind with their share of the marketplace . Watch out guys , give aldi and lidls 10 or so years in this climate and their share will increase 3 or 5 fold . Thanks for all the amazing videos Gareth.

They could be the same. I remember going into aldi once and a member of staff mentioned to me do you like the twix so I said yes and they said it was twixt and just repackaged. How true that is you don't know but it does make you wonder.

Three times the price? You're definitely paying for that 'Greggs' branding on that one. Bloody hell.

I had a Greggs cheese and onion pasty, after years of not having one.... I was really disappointed, and I didn't even finish it.... It was just mash.... Not very cheesy at all, and nothing like I remembered. I'm already saying the cheaper ones, it's hard not to be influenced by experience, eh!! Kx

Mate, this maybe won't surprise you but a lot of products in the cheaper supermarkets are exactly the same in the more expensive ones. When I was younger I worked in a few factories and it was my job to put the stickers on the tins and packets, I don't remember much about the tins but I know that the rolls and sandwiches from Waitrose and M and Msand S were at the time just labeled differently that and were exactly the same as you would get at a service station or pound shop

Well you know what to do. Buy the Aldis and a bottle of sauce with the money you save. And don't talk with your mouth open again, let's have a bit of ventriloquism. Haha, cheers all the best. Love it.

I, too, would prefer the Greggs with the creamier texture, but £1.50 each compared to 50p each, well, it's a hard decision. The Greggs festive bake costs £1.80 in the shop, according to the Metro.

I'd be really interested in your take on the vegan sausage roll by Gregg's. I love meat as you do, but the vegan sausage roll they do is excellent. Anyway, keep em coming, you're very entertaining as well as being genuinely useful. All the best.

The prices of a good numbers of items in Iceland have become expensive now. I guess the cost of the exclusive brands like Greggs and the freezers they have to run are now catching up to them.
