The Disney princes get a lot of misrepresentation as being "bland." And while that may be true for Prince Charming and the Michael Jackson-looking prince from Snow White, I don't know why people think that about the rest. Prince Eric is Ariel's kindred spirit. The reason he loves her isn't because of her looks, but because he's shy and introverted and he likes having someone as spontaneous as Ariel to teach him to appreciate the little things in life. That is ultimately what compels him to step up and become a man. Aladdin is the first Disney prince with his own movie. And he's compelling because of his inferiority complex and he has to learn that true power is freedom. And that is what wins Jasmine's heart because she knows better than anyone that life isn't about possessions. I also hate that Li Shang was cut from the Mulan remake simply because he was "Ping's" superior. Because while I agree that dating your boss is not healthy, Disney forgot that Shang was no longer Mulan's superior when they fell in love. She had been discharged from the army.

As for the Li Shang problem I thought an easy fix would be introducing Li Shang’s father and making him the technical general of the army but have him give that responsibility to Shang due his father leaving to go lead the war or something like that I think it happens in the original movie too. So this would make Shang more like a substitute general and more like an ace fighter that can show everyone how to fight and what not.

Snow White's prince gets too much unnecessary hate, I don't see where they get the "stalking" thing from, he hears a beautiful voice and tries to get to know her, yes he frightened her, but it was more of a surprise, he doesn't pull her back or try to physically stop her, but sings to her to show he's no threat, also people forget that when he sees Snow she's dressed like a commoner and most likely thought she was a servant and still fell for her, later we learn he's been looking for her and finally finds her supposedly dead, his kiss isn't creepy, many people and cultures have traditions where they kiss the dead goodbye and that's all this was, he was kissing her goodbye and then kneels to either cry or pray.

It isn't. In my opinion, a Princesses friends or prince saving them is good charma. And let's be real, young girls do occasionally fantasize about people protecting or helping them. Many princesses are sweet, and its how they get connections, so when things do go wrong, someone is coming for them. That's something we should want to teach people: make friends and be kind.

Belle is introduced as a girl who clearly likes books, and Gaston doesn't think women should read. When the Beast wants to do something nice for her, he shows her his library and, upon seeing her delight, tells her it's all hers. Similarly, Jasmine wants to see the world outside her palace, and what does Aladdin do? He takes her on a magic carpet ride, taking her to Egypt, Greece and China all in one night. Sure, these might be unrealistic standards, but in principle they're good lessons on how to tell Mr. Wrong from Mr. Right......as well as how to be Mr. Right. Also on the subject of the Beast, you can clearly see in him all of the hallmarks of a guy who's given up at the beginning. He barely bothers wearing clothes at all, his grooming is minimal, his place is an absolute mess, his manners have completely fallen by the wayside and he really doesn't want to entertain guests. As a long time bachelor, I can relate.

I think in fact that Beast was feeling some kind of depression because of what it happened to himself, so he was struggling to change until he met Belle. I mean...who can blame him? Sure, he needed a lesson to learn, but at the same time we can empathize for him. Someone who worked for the movie said that if Beast never met Belle he much probably could have lost his speech and would have gone to live into the forest, leaving the others and the castle behind.

@@ThreadBareHope1234 I think the library was more of a gesture of supporting her reading rather than a huge gift, I mean obviously it is but in the way that Gaston would reject her desire to read the Beast supports it, his method of doing so just happens to be a castle with a huge library in it.

@@Superlad945I'm personally not a fan of the idea of making theatrical sequels/paralells to fis that weren't recent. Aside from the original cast not being able to reprise their roles, it would probably retcon many things and set a new canon, disregarding the original. Plus that'd take up a slot for an original film. But that's just me personally. I do want more prince stories.
@OpticalSorcerer
@OpticalSorcerer 8 ай бұрын
@@Superlad945 I feel like the first trio of princesses are the hardest to emulate--and I imagine Jodi Benson will be too, once she's done. I'd personally love a "Swan Lake" musical adaptation before any other fairy tale/story. I imagine it'd give a lot of nods to "The Little Mermaid" given their similarities. Of course, the frog princess would also be a good film for a male-centric story--but to avoid similarities to "The Princess and the Frog," you could probably change the female frog into a human-like being, similar to "Beauty and the Beast." Or Hansel and Gretel; that'd be a fun dark fantasy ride that could give everyone 90s nostalgia.
@OpticalSorcerer
@OpticalSorcerer 8 ай бұрын
@@Superlad945 My main motivation for a "Frog princess" adaptation is because the original has the prince being insecure about his wife, and could fit in with modern Disney themes of feeling like you don't belong. I've been watching Hungarian folktales, and The Pussycat Princess is almost identical, so maybe they could do that instead--but again, give her humanoid qualities so the prince isn't simply romancing an animal. Plus I hope Tiana gives Naveen and Lottie a lot of love. Hopefully we get a preview at D23--assuming the strike hasn't affected production. I think it's because voices/accents change over time, though Snow White may be slightly less difficult since Adriana wasn't using her natural voice. It's a shame that Cibderella and Aurora's modern voices aren't quite as deep as the original ones. And speaking of Aurora, I hope future Disney musicals cast singers with operatic vocals again--Swan Lake would be a good one.
@OpticalSorcerer
@OpticalSorcerer 8 ай бұрын
@@Superlad945 I definotely recall hearing that Jodi was originally planned to be Belle, but they found her to sound too young or something like that--which I find odd, given that her Vanessa voice is perfect, albeit make it less evil. It's sad that Paige has already been replaced; it makes me feel old, but I hope she keeps getting speaking roles fpr Belle, at least. Jodi is also a talented voice actor--as is her co-star, Christopher Daniel Barnes. A part of me does wonder if Disney held them back similar to Adriana. And if Asha becomes a Disney princess or if Wish Disney's next big film, I do have concerns that as major stars, Ariana and Chris won't always be available to reprise their roles, eventually getting phased out entirely. I just know it's gonna bother me--and the stuff with SAG-AFTRA probably has them likely to leave sooner or later, anyway.

When I first heard back in 2010 that "Rapunzel" was to be renamed "Tangled" due the the creators wanting to emphasize the movie being "just as much the prince's story as it was Rapunzel's story," I rolled my eyes. Now, looking back from 2023, I have come to deeply appreciate the intentions behind this retitling, and I very much long for the 2010 version of Disney, a version which cared so deeply about character writing that they actually changed the title of a movie with the intention of encouraging viewers NOT to view this movie through the lens of gender, but rather through the lens of a universal human experience. Tangled was the culmination of the "prince/princess/villain" formula that Disney had been slowly honing for 80 years until that point. It is just such a well-balanced movie that perfects the formula in every possible way and leaves us with three extremely memorable characters that are ALL developed with a great deal of care in the way they were written. I've rewatched this movie so many times because I just love all of the characters so darn much! While I don't know the details of the creative teams behind each movie, I view Tangled and Frozen as two opposing approaches to Disney interpreting its "prince/princess/villain" formula. Tangled takes a more optimistic approach which sets out to pay respect to the formula and build on it, while Frozen takes a pessimistic approach which sets out to criticize and subvert the formula. Unfortunately, Disney chose the latter as their path moving forward. Just as Tangled was the culmination of years of respect for the formula, the marketing for the upcoming "Snow White" remake is the culmination of years of subversion of the formula - and the culmination of subversion is active ridicule. I hope that Disney will see Rachel Zegler's comments as a wakeup call to stop going down this road. It's gone far beyond "lifting up women" and has devolved into just bullying of men. This way of thinking is NOT feminism, and it makes me sad that some people feel it is. Whether Disney changes or not, I don't really care because I am always happy to go back and rewatch Tangled! It just puts such a smile on my face every time.

To date, the Beast is one of my top favorite Disney princes. Such a well-rounded, developed character, with both flaws and virtues. Belle didn't change him, she inspired change in him-and he realized he owed it to himself and others to try in their relationships. The best part is that his self-improvement all happens within the context of a platonic relationship, since he and Belle don't officially get together until the end; and it all occurs within the timespan of a year. I still stand by Beauty and the Beast having the best and most believable romance out of all the Disney fiilms. Hans is unironically one of my favorites as well, mainly because of how much potential he has before the dumb twist. He shows himself to be a capable leader and warrior, even putting himself in harm's way and nearly dying when fighting Marshmallow. He's the one who governed the kingdom during a crisis, and it wasn't even his responsibility to do so. A lot of people overlook this aspect of his character because the shock-twist overshadows any development he had. It's a shame. He could've really been one of the best princes since the Beast, and I wanted his backstory with his brothers expanded upon. He isn't a Disney character, but shout-out to Prince Cornelius from Don Bluth's Thumbelina. One of my favorite prince characters in animation, so noble and brave despite his naive youth. Jim Hawkins is also my favorite of the non-prince male Disney characters, really good character development.

I wonder if the people who keep saying that the prince in Snow White "stalked" her have ever actually been stalked. I had 3 stalkers in high school and I'm still struggling with PTSD after over 10 years since it happened. I can safely say Snow White's is NOT stalker material. I'll tell you who DOES fit the stalker profile: Edward Cullen from the Twilight saga. He's almost exactly how one of my stalkers followed me around (thank heavens he never got to watch me in my bedroom while I slept), and, unlike Bella Swan, I did NOT reciprocate his feelings (needless to say, I've never liked the Twilight series).

@@Muna-Jlore0997 That's what makes it all the more damning. Speaking as someone who was in theater (I was taught by my mom who took acting lessons), how can an actress be in a show where they have very little idea of what the story is, who the character is, and what to bring fresh to the character and story? What a lot of people don't realize is that acting is a real job, it's not about the fame and fortune that CAN come with it (and it's never a guarantee you will be rich and famous at the end of it). Yet for so many actors nowadays, that seems to be all they care about. As an actor/actress, you're supposed to embody not only the audience's interpretation of the character, but you also combine it with your own interpretation (and hopefully, they marry together well). In other words, you have to do your research and look into the history of the story and character, how it's been portrayed before, and methods previous actors have used in order to inform yourself as to what new to try out on set or on stage. It's wise to not sign up for any project you don't feel 100% invested in, otherwise you end up with a shoddy or sub-par performance. I don't remember where I heard the saying, but it's said that a great actor is one who can play his part well, whether or not he is passionate about it, yet a better, more rare one is found when he is passionate about the work he is doing. I was always taught that passion in the acting business is another way of say "involved behind the scenes": Research, utilizing that research, and showing the results of that research. So really, the performance is all about whether or not you did your homework on the project because it shows one way or the other. And if Rachel Zegler's marketing technique is anything to go by, the outcome of the film doesn't look promising. But who knows? The developers might surprise us and she just might be a bad apple in the bunch.

Frozen is an almost perfect movie, and the fix is so obvious. Easy fix for the Frozen's Prince Problem, keep everything the same up until the end. However, at the kiss scene, you make Anna stop the kiss admitting that she doesn't even know him and that she found someone she truly loved while out during her adventures. Then you could go one of two ways with Hans - either he understands and is supportive (unlikely) or he completely flips out feeling betrayed and leaving Anna to her fate and the rest of the movie plays out the same (more likely). Personally, I would have preferred Hans being a "Nice Guy" than a secretly evil twist villain.

And with tha journey That prince experience the hardships that his kingdom goes through to keep the peace despite being well meaning but blinded by noblism. And the Warrior learns to be more compassionate and understand outside of combat you can be closer to someone and let your guard down. They both teach other the benifits of theyre perspectives. She teach him how to fight, and he teach her how to be a compassionate leader. (Oh wait that was literally the Princess and the frog.) but the formula can still work.

The Beast from "Beauty and the Beast" is always going to stand out from other fairytale Princes because, he was the most well written character; that he never really changed much with every version of the story, (Except for some notable versions of the story) that is why he was the only Disney prince character that actually had a 'set' origin story up until 2023's The Little Mermaid with Prince Eric and his story. Technically we do see a 9 year old prince Philip in the beginning of Sleeping Beauty at her christening; So, I guess this makes Prince Phillip the first Disney prince to have an origin story, which would make The Beast the second prince to have an origin story.

The prince in the Snow White story is not much more than a trope. People give early Disney Princesses a bad rap for having stereotypical female representations. But in these early films, the princesses are often the focus and often have more agency, influence and character development than their male counterparts. The male princes are often simplified and subjugated to being the reward at the end of a morality arch. That’s the extent of their role. If the princess learns or does something important or demonstrates her worth or value, she is rewarded. Believing that many of these stories are from the patriarchy is naive. These stories were often told through folkloric methods, word of mouth, and by women to women. Many of these fairy tales are in fact historically matriarchal, in that they were told by women to teach women certain values of the time. Chastity, kindness, integrity, patience, etc. The message usually comes down to learning some important moral and then being rewarded for it. Usually via a prince or rather marriage, which to those historic times meant security, and security meant happiness to women who at the time had very little autonomy in the culture. I’m pretty sure I don’t need to cite my sources to say that times have changed. Women have a lot more rights and are more highly educated in general (there are still places in the world where that is not the case), also what many of these re-imaginings tell us is that so have the values that we are messaging to other women. How the prince character is treated in the re-imaginings is rather telling as it does send a message or value. In all of them, Cinderella developed the prince from simple reward to equal partner. And there I would agree that out of all the reimaginings, the Cinderella remake is the only one to bring the prince out of his trope role, and by doing is the only one that sends a mature and healthy message about relationships.

This is a very unpopular opinion, but here. I feel John Smith from Pocahontas is one of the most overhated and overlooked princes. I understand and know why a lot of people don’t like his character, especially when you consider he does start out as a bit of a jerk at first, especially when he calls Pocahontas’s people savages. I completely agree that it’s very infuriating to see him act that way, but I feel everyone forgets how much he changed, including willing to die for Pocahontas’s dad to prevent the war. After the Colors of the Wind song, he tries convincing his comrades the natives are friendly and war is wrong. He even gets into a fight with his boss over the war. I also really love how he really wants to learn more about Pocahontas’s culture, even freaking out from a talking tree at first, but then rolls with it because he understands how much this means to Pocahontas. Later on, he not only takes the blame for Thomas, he even sings a very special song I feel is beyond underrated. If I Never Knew You. I really love this song and its my favorite aside I See the Light. It really shows how much John has matured as a person from an arrogant captain to a man who’d die in a heartbeat for Pocahontas. He is the one who’s about to die in a few hours, but he is the one comforting and being there for Pocahontas, not the other way around. He’s already made peace with his fate, and just wants to let her know how much she means to him and can’t imagine living a life without her. Fast forward to him saving her dad’s life. I think a lot of people forget her dad hated him so much for killing his best warrior who was supposed to marry his daughter. But John doesn’t hesitate for a moment to forgive him by saving his life, fully expecting the bullet to kill him instantly. Fast forward again, when they’re about to leave for London, after Pocahontas declines his offer to come with him, he was so willing to die in her land. HE DOES NOT TRY TO CONVINCE HER TO LEAVE HER PEOPLE FOR HIM. He even begs her to let him stay at her side! But he lets go of her because he loves her, respecting her wishes for him to return and hopefully get better. Heck, his final act in the movie is literally doing the one thing he never does up until this point, saying goodbye, specifically in her language. When she taught him greetings, he wouldn’t let her finish the motion for goodbye, indicating how he kinda feels about her. Overall, I understand why not a lot of people like John Smith, but I don’t understand why everyone hates him because he’s a bit arrogant at first and forget he almost dies in the movie. But have the nerve to like Beast, despite he f*cking roared at Belle several times until she finally snapped at him. My other favorite prince is Flynn Rider. I do agree with everything you said about him. I think my favorite thing about him is mainly his humor but how he does come to deeply care about Rapunzel and even actually dies to save her from someone he could tell didn’t actually love her. Plus I feel the part he brings her to her parents, a lot of people forget the king was literally after his head for so many crimes, including stealing the princess’s crown (the only thing they had of their daughter before this day) But the king doesn’t arrest him, instead Flynn is welcomed and shown gratitude by her parents, including having his past crimes pardoned. I really agree with your opinion about Kristoff. Tbh I don’t really like Frozen and find it so overrated. The main problem I have with him is he’s kinda a pointless character in the story. Literally, his only purpose is to show Anna not ending up with the first guy she meets. We don’t even have any backstory to how he met Sven, why he was apparently abandoned at the beginning of the movie, or he mentions he doesn’t trust other people. It’s never explained to why he doesn’t trust others aside his petty disagreement with Okin the shopkeeper. I’d like some backstory, maybe he was left in the cold by his parents or something, a Princess Mononoke situation? Otherwise his relationship with Anna imo is really underdeveloped. I find the most laughable moments is when he calls the trolls “love experts” but they literally have the same childish mentality as Anna, trying to marry them right there while Anna is freezing to death in front of them

I'm gonna be real and say people hate John Smith and Pocahontas the movie because it SEVERELY misrepresents the actual historical figures it based on a romanticizes the HISTORICAL story of a 14 year old Indigenous girl with a much older white colonial man.

Your points about John Smith are valid, but at the end of the day I just think their romance was forced. It makes sense that he fell in love with Pocahontas, but the movie gave us no good reason for Pocahontas to fall in love with him. Like, he literally walks up to her, they talk for a second about his unempathetic view of nature, then she sings him a song and by the end she's embracing him. I get that "Colors of the Wind" was meant to be a courting montage of sorts, but it just didn't really work since the montage was all about him learning about HER and not the other way around.

Ditto on Kristoff, even Hans is more interesting than him. Frozen, at the _very_ least, needed more time to cook. So many things in that movie are half-measured at best.

@@AnimaVox_ Frozen was the beginning of Disney's descent into letting misinformed executives meddle too much in the creative process. The people who wanted to tell the story of Ana and Elsa's relationship are CLEARLY not the same people who wanted to tell the story of "Kristoff the boyfriend" or "Olaf the toy salesman." The final product of Frozen is basically 2 or 3 entirely different movies that Disney tried to cram together to make all involved parties happy, and it just ended up a mess. I still cannot understand how anyone actually likes this movie. The characters are very weak and the writing is condescending to the viewer.

I think it would have worked better if Hans wasn't reviled to be evil but duty bound as a leader to a fault. It would have worked if Hans actually *did* kiss her only for nothing to happen. Yes it's still reviled that he was only interested in Anna for a chance at the throne but without the malice and possibly holding the idea that in time he'd grow genuine feelings for her but at this time they still only just met for him to feel truly attracted yet. He could still leave her in the locked room (without putting the fire out) to find Elsa and "end winter" out of duty to save both Arindel and the princess. He could have told Elsa the truth about Anna's condition in which (without either knowing a better way to fix things at the time) Elsa agrees to sacrifice herself to his blade to end the winter and potentially save her sister, And basically the movie continues mostly unchanged from there. The new intent behind Hans's actions make it a much better twist in my opinion, making him more of a grey area character rather than a mustache twirling villain.

Track record of understanding & effectively executing the creation of likeable characters was an earned part of their reputation. And integral for media aimed at families & children. Lost it now. RIP Walt. We await the successor that will pick up the torch.

Why not make an animated aspect for the Prince from Snow White? The entire 365 days of him looking for her and him slowly falling in love with her as he looks for her and learns more about her through his journey. There. Nice cash grab for you Disney. I’ve done the work for you.

I'd actually love to see a video analysising the comic relief characters in Disney movies. So many animations try to emulate them but greatly misunderstand their power as actual characters rather than simply gags. Very often they have as much heart and agency as the main protagonists and develop a fantastic chemistry with them. The Dwarves in Snow White, the Fairy trio in Sleeping Beauty, the animal buddies The Little Mermaid, the ornament servants in Beauty and the Beast, it's so hard to imagine those films without them. Not even the live action remakes could omit them for 'realism's' sake.

I’m not sure if he watched that musical you’re referring to here, I think it’s the one where jasmine turned out to be jafar’s daughter and Aladdin was actually just a con artist who rewrote the story into Disney’s version instead.

I don't know why, but even as a woman, ever since I was little I was always drawn by stories with a strong male protagonist. Or where the female and male protagonist are equally badass together. I was never into the whole "girl power" trope.

I want to add another thing about prince Naveen. Everyone rightfully credits Tiana with teaching him about hard work and responsibility, which is important. But I would also argue that he helps Tiana and teaches her the value of letting loose and having fun. At the start of the movie, we literally see her turning down an opportunity to go out with friends so she can work more and even at the party she’s not participating she’s working. It’s not until she meets Naveen when they’re frogs that we see her let loose for the first time in joining him in the dance. By the end of the movie we see her more comfortable and open with her emotions when she tells him she loves him, and realizing that her one singular goal was not the end all be all. She even ends the movie having fun in her restaurant in dancing with Naveen. I just always love them as a couple because I feel like it was the first time we’re both people had something to contribute to the relationship and was able to bring out a new trait in each other that they previously hadn’t known they had.

Yeah they both benefited from one another and Naveen helped Tiana cut loose a bit Heck everyone knew she had a problem of always working harder. The moment she actually slowed down didn't rush to the end goal they ended up finding the solution.

Uh, Arthur was born a prince who was raised as an orphan page; True it was not fully expressed in the Disney film, but was hinted at in the "storybook" prologue. Aladdin in "Aladdin" is different because he was born and raised as a poor boy, he does not "really" count as a prince.

They should've made Frozen's villain prince be less evil and more political. Like he was aiming for a grand duky and a political alliance for his family and he didn't really love her instead of him aiming for the crown and wanting to murder Elsa later on originally

Prince Eric is one of the if not the most misunderstood characters in the Disney canon and as a result, they fucking ruined him and missed the point of his character. I’m still so pissed off at how they butchered him and painted him as this indifferent, unfeeling and predatory character when that is NEVER how he was in the original.
