I have always looked at Jack and Barbossa as the two sides of the pirates. Jack is the romantic idea of a pirate we all have, while Barbossa is what a pirate actually is.

I really do love Jack for one main reason. He lies to your face, and blatantly so. He isn't a scheming politician type, where there's plots on plots with so many moving parts and people involved in the scheme. He does all the dirty work himself. He's honourable and dependable in that respect, he won't turn people against you, that would be a dirty trick for him.

Yeah, I was never a fan of these movies, but that's the one thing that I'll give the movie franchise credit for. Jack throughout the whole franchise never really changes or learns any type of lesson come the end. And considering how it's a Disney product, usually creators would be ordered by Disney to have their characters to confront these flaws or they'd have them be the comic relief. But with Pirates, it's really a part of what makes Jack such a blast to watch. We recognize these flaws in ourselves at times and like that there's a character that not only learns to live with them, but often uses it to his advantage, helping drive himself closer to his unestablished goals.

Live-action Disney needs to keep trying with original films rather than remakes. If they did PG-13 fairy tale musicals, they'd corner the market.

I wanna see Disney open a new DisneyAdults studio and make some MA or R rated fairy tales. Gimme the classics but adapted to be closer to the Brothers Grimm versions of the story, not the very kid friendly versions. Wouldn't even be opposed to them being musicals
@OpticalSorcerer
@OpticalSorcerer Ай бұрын
@@Aryasvitkona The renaissance era showed they were capable of this--but I'd prefer mostly PG-13 with the ocassional R film (I feel like a lot of "R" films are made that way just for the sake of it when it can be done just as well as a PG-13 film, not to mention the rated R market could be VERY difficult for an animated film, let alone a musical one). I'd enjoy new stories rather than true/darker takes on ones they're already made.

There are two character tics that really enriches Captain Jack Sparrow. The first is the (maybe apocryphal) anecdote that while Jack has that wobbly gait when walking on land, he walks steadily when he's on a deck of a ship. I don't know if that's true but it's a great character tic displaying where Jack's element is. The second is the cold, chilling look he gives Barbossa when he shoots him in the first film. Nowhere else in the film does Jack display that sort of emotion. Even when running for his life, Jack always had an element of chaotic fun around him, except for that one scene. That really shows you how much Jack despised Barbossa for what he did.
@rayediance
@rayediance Ай бұрын
I always thought the “wobbly gait” was because of ataxia from drinking - but I love your take too
@flounderingfish2480
@flounderingfish2480 26 күн бұрын
The wobbly gait could also be a nod to “sea legs,” a phenomenon where people become so accustomed to moving on a ship at sea-which is always swaying and requires you to constantly shift your balance-that they appear to meander and “wobble” when walking on steady land.

Jack didn't actually do the entire turtle escape thing. In the first movie he reveals to Elizabeth that he didn't escape but he was lying drunk in rum on the beach for 3 days as then a ship arrived with rum because it was some rum trading thing. He then opens a hatch revealing rum and then says that they let him on the ship and brought him back to land. Also saying that it will no longer work as they never came back here due to the commodore. So Jack actually lied about his escape to make himself seem more legendary.

My Jack Russel was named Sparrow after a certain captain. He's been with me since I was a child, and after 19 years, I said goodbye to him yesterday after he took a sudden turn for the worse the evening before. Today this video was recommended to me. So, I 100% agree, that Captain Jack Sparrow is the perfect pirate. There's always another adventure, and Sparrows of every kind are always there to find it.

I once saw a video (dont remember which youtuber) but they said that Jack Sparrow is the archetype "Trickster God". Trickster god, rather than just trickster, because he is a character who is such a huge influence in the main characters story that he essentially is a main character. Not necesserally good or evil, but does things of huge impact on their own whim, for the fun of it or the heck of it or something else. Kinda like a trickster god would. Like loki in norse mythology, or... i believe its Hermes in Greek mythology, maybe eve Dionysus. The character is just brilliant

What I find really interesting about the ships used is there’s a decent bit of accuracy to them especially in context. Given that the Caribbean station was pretty distant it makes sense that the dauntless would be a second rate ship of the line which only Britain produced to any great numbers. Everyone else either went in with first rates or third rates. And this is implied when that royal marine says in these waters as opposed to in the Royal Navy. The interceptor being a brig also makes sense as those ships have a much shallower draft and have a greater turn of speed in calm waters with a good wind. This makes sense as most pirates of the time favored smaller ships like sloops, brigs, and merchantmen. Finally the black pearl is built along the lines of a 16th century race built galleon. The way all the characters speak of this ship as something old and powerful reflects well in the ship being over a century old by the time the movie takes place. Indeed one can imagine it starting life as a privateering vessel during the wars with Spain.

That shot when Davy Jones stabs Will and Jack doesn’t know what to do and is in distress is one of the best Jack Sparrow moments. It truly shows how much he grew to care about Will and couldn’t live with himself if Will died and he stayed alive.

I agree with your points. Jack Sparrow may be a pirate, and he does have his flaws, but he has some genuine good moments that show he isn’t heartless. The part where Jack in the 4th movie tried to see if Blackbeard was willing to give up his life to save his daughter, just shows that Blackbeard only cared about his well being. Jack is a well written character, and while the 5th movie tarnished Jacks character, he at least had a pretty good ending, but with the possibility of a 6th movie, and Johnny Depp Jo longer being in movies, there’s no doubt in my mind that Woke Disney will ruin the POTC franchise.

The 4th one was a decline in quality, but still watchable. The 5th one, though? Extremely terrible. The character arcs felt shoddy and rushed, Jack barely even had one himself and had a half-assed redemption. Hated the romance sub-plot too. And teasing Davey Jones’ return was so cheap. He had the perfect end to his character, bringing him back just ruins it.

You need to watch more pirate movies. Robert Newton was a 50x better pirate than Depp. And Errol Flynn and Burt Lancaster weren't as incredible as Newton, but they were still better than Depp. The first PotC was great, but my god, they thrashed that franchise into the dirt. But the coolest pirate movies are from the 50s or earlier- The Sea Hawk, Treasure Island, Captain Blood, Return of Long John Silver, Captain Kidd,, The Crimson Pirate, Against All Flags. The stuff that the PotC franchise copy-pasted.

If you think about it, chaotic, neutral doesn't make any sense. Chaotic. Good chaotic, evil okay, but chaotic neutral doesn't make sense because neutrality itself is chaotic. A neutral being is neither good. They're neither evil. They're both and neither all at the same time and that embodies chaos. So true chaos is neutral. It is both good and evil but it's its own thing so it's neither all at once and what people perceive as neutrality is usually indifference and apathy which is actually not true
@MylesKillis
@MylesKillis 27 күн бұрын
Chaotic means you don’t have a set value system. It’s the opposite of lawful. Neutral means you only care about yourself. It’s neither helpful to others = good or harmful to others = evil. It’s all about does it help me yes or no. A chaotic neutral is someone who doesn’t believe in a set of rules that help them. They just react hoping it works out for them. A lawful neutral is someone who believes in a set of rules but only because they truly believe those rules will help them.
